Behaviour Change Communication: Family and Community Approaches
Breast and cervical cancers are two deathliest cancers causing women’s death in Indonesia. ‘Aisyiyah developed a model to support, educate and assist women to fight against breast and cervical cancers through behavior change communication in 15 districts. This model is implemented by integrating behavior change communication through family and community support approaches. Research on behavior change communication so far has focused more on the individual level and not many have paid attention to family (husband and wife relations) and community (cultural) factors to encourage individual behavior change. This study aims to explore ‘Aisyiyah’s strategies in behavior change communication (promoting, counselling, and assisting) women through family and community support approaches. This research used a descriptive qualitative method with a case study approach. Data collection are in-depth interview dan documentation. Research locations in five districts; Bantaeng, Mempawah, Sambas, Magelang, and Lamongan. This study revealed that behavior change communication integrated of promotion, family and community approaches was more effective in encouraging women to detect cancer early
Saffron (Crocus sativus L.): as an antidepressant
Saffron, Crocus sativus (Iridaceae), is a perennial herb, which earned its popularity
as both medicine and spice. It is an inhabitant of different mountainous regions
of Asia Minor to Greece, Western Asia, Egypt, and India. The benefits of saffron
as an antidepressant are well-documented. Almost 150 volatile and nonvolatile
compounds are obtained from the chemical analysis of this plant. Fewer
than 50 constituents elucidated and identified so far showed phytochemical
characteristics. The major bioactive compounds identified are safranal, crocin,
and picrocrocin, which are responsible for its aroma as well as its bitter taste. This
review is an attempt to encompass the methods of analysis and pharmacodynamic
and pharmacokinetic properties of saffron followed by its efficacious and safe
potential
Contribution of tree community structure to forest productivity across a thermal gradient in eastern Asia
Despite their fundamental importance the links between forest productivity, diversity and climate remain contentious. We consider whether variation in productivity across climates reflects adjustment among tree species and individuals, or changes in tree community structure. We analysed data from 60 plots of humid old-growth forests spanning mean annual temperatures (MAT) from 2.0 to 26.6 °C. Comparing forests at equivalent aboveground biomass (160 Mg C ha–1), tropical forests ≥24 °C MAT averaged more than double the aboveground woody productivity of forests <12 °C (3.7 ± 0.3 versus 1.6 ± 0.1 Mg C ha–1 yr–1). Nonetheless, species with similar standing biomass and maximum stature had similar productivity across plots regardless of temperature. We find that differences in the relative contribution of smaller- and larger-biomass species explained 86% of the observed productivity differences. Species-rich tropical forests are more productive than other forests due to the high relative productivity of many short-stature, small-biomass species
Efficient eco-friendly syntheses of dithiocarbazates and thiosemicarbazones
Eight Schiff bases have been synthesized by conventional and three different eco-friendly methods, whereby two aromatic carbonyl compounds viz. 2-thiophenecarboxaldehyde and salicylaldehyde were reacted with S-methyl, S-benzyl, and S-n-octyl-dithiocarbazates and thiosemicarbazide. In order to evaluate the efficiency of the synthesis methods, the time to complete the reaction and the yield of the Schiff base synthezised by eco-friendly methods, such as solvent-free grinding, water as a solvent, and lemon juice as catalyst, were compared with those synthesized by the conventional method. The chemical structures of all the synthesized Schiff bases, where two of them are novel and reported for the first time, were fully characterized by a variety of physico-chemical, analytical, and spectroscopic techniques. The molecular and crystal structures of the Schiff bases especially those having 2-thiophene moiety were further elucidated by single crystal X-ray diffraction analyzes
