    INCREASING STUDENTS’ CULTURAL AWARENESS BY USING FILM IN TEACHING CROSS CULTURAL UNDERSTANDING

    This research is about the students ‘attitude toward the use of films in teaching Cross Cultural Understanding as classroom research taking fourth semester students of English and Literature department, Adab and Humanities Faculty of UIN Alauddin as the sample of the research. The research question put forward is: what is the student’s attitude toward the use of film in increasing their cultural awareness. The research instrument is a questionnaire consists of sixteen items which aims at finding out the students’ attitude toward using films in increasing their cultural awareness.The data analysis showed that they have positive attitude toward the use of film in the Cross Cultural Understanding class because: 1. Films were interesting material, 2. Using films were new variation of teaching in the class, 3.Students understand the material easier, 4. Students know the other culture better. Film can also increase students’ cultural awareness because: 1.They get information from the movie, 2.They can compare their culture and others, 3.     WORKING WITH COMMUNITIES IN ASSET MAPPING USING ABCD APPROACH IN ALAUDDIN STATE ISLAMIC UNIVERSITY MAKASSAR

    Asset Based Community Development (ABCD) approach has gained popularity as one methodology used in Community-Driven Development (CDD) in approaching the desired change in our left behind local community in Indonesia generally and South Sulawesi specifically. UIN Alauddin as a higher education institution has one responsibility among the three assignments not only to teach and to do research but also to serve the community. In strengthening this function, UIN plans to implement more persistently students and teaching staffs community service with the ABCD approach. This paper discusses the ABCD approach and how it had been implemented for the above purpose. We evaluate how the assigned working group (pokja) from UIN had tried to implement this in Selayar Island and a student community service using this ABCD approach in the specific field of community health in Bantaeng. Finally we list the opportunities and challenges from the discussion to propose a better recommendation for future implementation of this ABCD for the local context in South Sulawesi.

    Abstract This research is about inter-cultural non-verbal communication strategies in Indonesian and Thailand students’ interaction which is included in the Kinesics of Novinger’s theory. The objectives of research are finding out the description of the kinds of non-verbal communication strategies used among students and the ways of non-verbal communication to the students. This research applies descriptive quantitative method. The research instruments are documentation and questionnaire. The data analysis showed that there were 39 kinds of non-verbal communication. There were 16 kinds of Gestures, 6 kinds of Eye Contact, 7 kinds of Facial Expressions, 6 kinds of Touch, and 4 kinds of Posture. The result of descriptive analysis showed the rate percentage of non-verbal communication strategies that have big roles in communication between Indonesian and Thailand students were 90% gesture and 10% eye contact.     Students’ Perception Toward the Use of Deductive and Inductive Approaches in Teaching English Grammar

    This study investigated the perception of students of the use of deductive and inductive learning approaches. The subject of the study involved a program named PIBA (Program Intensifikasi Bahasa Asing) in UIN Alauddin, Makassar where 2 English classes were purposively taken as samples to be treated using deductive and inductive approaches in teaching grammar with integrative skills. The research method employed was mixed method with quantitative and qualitative data taken from the control and experimental classes using an ARCS (Attention, Relevance, Confidence, Satisfaction) motivational model questionnaire, with in depth interviews and classroom observations utilized as research instruments. Based on the questionnaire and interviews, students gave positive perceptions on both learning approaches

    Persuasive Strategies Used by the Coaches in the Blind Audition of The Voice USA 2018

    This article discusses the persuasive strategies used by the coaches in the blind audition of The Voice USA 2018. The objects of this research are the utterances of the four coaches in The Voice USA 2018 who are Adam Levine, Alicia Keys, Kelly Clarkson, and Blake Shelton. The objectives of this research are to identify the kinds of persuasive strategies and to analyze the way the persuasive strategies were expressed by the coaches in the blind audition of The Voice USA 2018. This research used a descriptive qualitative method. The data sources in this research are videos and transcripts. The researcher took twelve videos of the blind audition of the Voice USA 2018 which have more than three million views on YouTube as the sources of data. The researcher took the data from the official YouTube account of The Voice. In collecting the data, the researcher watched all the twelve videos of the blind audition of The Voice USA 2018 from the official YouTube account of The Voice and transcribed the videos.  The instrument that is used in this research is the researcher herself as the instrument to get the data. The results of the research show that the four coaches in the blind audition of The Voice USA 2018 used three persuasive strategies which are logos, ethos, and pathos. The way of the coaches used the three strategies was different. When stating logos, the coaches persuaded the contestants by stating logical reasons, a specific fact, and truths as a piece of supporting evidence. When they used ethos, they showed their reputation, credibility, image, character, and the previous record to get more trust from the contestants. Then, when they used pathos, they used emotional appeal to control the contestants' emotions

    The Students‘ Perception Toward Comprehensive Examination of English Proficiency at English and Literature Department of Alauddin State Islamic University of Makassar

    This research studied about the students‘ perception toward comprehensive examination of English Proficiency at English and Literature Department of Alauddin State Islamic University of Makassar. Questionnaire (closed-ended and open-ended items) was distributed as instrument to 25 students of English and Literature Department, academic year 2010 and 2011 as the sample of this research. Then, in analyzing data the researcher used descriptive quantitative method, it aimed to know students‘ perception toward comprehensive examination of English Proficiency at English and Literature Department of Alauddin State Islamic University of Makassar. The result of this research showed that there were some difficulties that students faced in comprehensive examination of English Proficiency at English and Literature Department of Alauddin State Islamic University of Makassar. They were in structure section, listening and reading section, difficult in limitation time and difficult to get the target score. Then 56% students stated comprehensive examination of English Proficiency had important role in English and Literature Department because it was useful and good subject in order to measure students‘ English skills. Based on the result, the researcher concludes that most of students perceived that comprehensive examination of English Proficiency was important. Therefore it should be places as one of requirement to pass in university

    Linguistic Code Mixing: A Study of an Australian YouTuber

    Mixing one language to another languages in sociolinguistics is called code mixing. It happens in one of the Australian Youtuber, Damian Hoo, who currently living in Indonesia. Therefore, this research discussed about the types and functions of code mixing produced by Australian Youtuber, Damian Hoo, based on Hoffman’s (1991) theory. This research applied descriptive qualitative method. In collecting the data, the researchers applied documentation method. The  result of the research revealed that there are two types produced by Damian Hoo in his YouTube channel, namely intra-sentential code mixing with 55 data and involving a change of pronunciation with only 2 data. For the functions of code mixing, there are six functions of code mixing which are used by Damian Hoo, such as talking about a particular topic as the highest number for function with 25 data, being emphatic about something with 10 data, interjection with 3 data, repetition used for clarification with 6 data, intention of clarifying the speech content for the interlocutor with 12 data, and the last expressing group identity with only 1 data which makes this function is the less used function of code mixing. And the researchers did not find any data of the  intra-lexical code mixing and function for quoting somebody else
