A note about a new method for solving Riccati differential equations

    Get PDF
Al Bastami, Belić, and Petrović (2010) proposed a new method to find solutions to some Riccati differential equations. Initially, they obtain a second-order linear ordinary differential equation (ODE) through a standard variable change in the Riccati equation. They then propose a new variable change and discuss the resolution of the resulting ODE in two cases. In the first one, the resulting ODE has constant coefficients. In the second case, they claim that it is possible to arbitrarily choose one of the resulting ODE coefficients and solve particular Riccati ODEs. We show in this work that all Riccati equations that belong to the first case can also be solved by Chini’s method. Furthermore, we show that any Riccati equation fits the second case and that the choice of the resulting ODE coefficients is not free

    Get PDF
The eating habits of the Mediterranean Diet (MD) represent a complete and balanced food model with numerous benefits for health. However, these eating models are deteriorating due to the popularization of foods typical of societies that have less healthy habits. As a result, strategies must be developed to bring consumers closer to the ingredients/food of the MD. Science has made available various ingredients and techniques that have allowed the development of new textures and flavours. The objective of the present study was to explore the possibility of applying the spherification technique, using sodium alginate and calcium gluconolactate, to produce changes in the texture of some foods/ingredients of the MD, developing the following food preparations: A) Liquid core hydrogel table olives (LCHTO) using a macerate and their dilutions, by reverse spherification; B) Wine pearls using liqueur wine (reduced and non-reduced); C) Vinegar pearls using local fig and grape vinegars. The reverse spherification method resulted in adequate LCHTO when the most diluted macerate of table olives (1:4) was selected and the best pearls were obtained when spherification was applied to reduced liquor wine and fig vinegar in 1.0% sodium alginate solution

Background: The association between lipoprotein levels and late-onset neonatal sepsis has shown controversial results. The aims are to assess lipid profile, cytokines, and Monocyte-to-HDL (M/H) ratio as diagnostic and prognostic markers for late-onset neonatal sepsis. Methods: This prospective study included 49 septic neonates and 17 controls. Cholesterol (CT), Triglyceride (TG), Very-Low-Density (VLDLc), Low-Density (LDLc), and High-Density Lipoproteins (HDLc) were measured at admission (D0) and on days 3, 7 and 10 to evaluate septic shock outcomes. Cytokines and monocytes were evaluated by flow cytometry. Results: Septic newborns showed higher IL-6 and IL-8 at D0 and CT levels on D7 and on D10, which also presented higher TG, VLDLc and non-HDL cholesterol concentrations than controls. The septic shock group (n = 22) revealed a higher number of male subjects, CRP, IL-6, IL-8 and IL-10 levels, while lower TG, HDLc, monocyte numbers and M/H ratio at admission compared to the non-shock group (n = 27). M/H ratio and non-HDL cholesterol on D0 were risk factors for septic shock (OR = 0.70, 0.49‒0.99; OR = 0.96, 0.92‒0.99, respectively). Decreasing levels from D0 to D3 of CT (OR = 0.96, 0.93‒0.99), VLDLc (OR = 0.91, 0.85‒0.98), and non-HDL cholesterol (OR = 0.92, 0.87‒0.98) were also predictors of septic shock. Conclusions: Lower M/H ratios and non-HDL cholesterol at admission and decreasing levels of cholesterol, VLDLc and non-HDL cholesterol during a hospital stay are associated with the development of septic shock in newborns with late-onset neonatal sepsis

These nanostructures were formed through the dissociation of yttrium, ytterbium and europium oxides using acetic, hydrochloric and nitric acids, followed by a fast hydrothermal method assisted by microwave irradiation and subsequent calcination process. Structural characterization has been carried out by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) both coupled with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). The acid used for dissociation of the primary oxides played a crucial role on the morphology of the nanostructures. The acetic-based nanostructures resulted in nanosheets in the micrometer range, with thickness of around 50 nm, while hydrochloric and nitric resulted in sphere-shaped nanostructures. The produced nanostructures revealed a homogeneous distribution of the doping elements. The thermal behaviour of the materials has been investigated with in situ X-Ray diffraction and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) experiments. Moreover, the optical band gaps of all materials were determined from diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, and their photoluminescence behaviour has been accessed showing significant differences depending on the acid used, which can directly influence their upconversion performance.publishersversionpublishe

    Get PDF
Introduction: Daily life experiences provide maturity along human development, and the environments in which they occur are essential for this process. These experiences help to build children’s personalities and the way they deal with the world around them. Objectives: In this study, we aimed to understand the occupational behavior of four children aged five to six years old through their mothers’ reports. Methodology: The average time spent with daily activities is described, and playing was a central theme of analysis. We analyzed the preferences, companies and emotional characteristics of the play activity. We used an Activity Clock and semi-structured interviews with the children’s mothers as data collection instruments. Results: The main results show that most of their daily life time is spent with sleep, school and play activities. They indicate that children prefer games that challenge acquisitions that are under construction. Regarding company, these children still have their mothers as a reference to the play activity, but also peers their age or a little older. Conclusion: Play has an important representation in the daily occupational lives of these children and it stands as a key life experience to acquire skills and face challenges
