Structural Sequence Detectability in Free Choice Interpreted Petri Nets

    Get PDF
This paper is concerned with the structural sequence detectability problem in Free Choice Interpreted Petri nets, i.e. with the possibility of recovering the firing transition sequence in Free Choice Interpreted Petri nets using the output information when the initial marking is unknown. Based on the Free Choice Interpreted Petri net structure, three relationships are proposed which are devoted to capture the confusion over the transitions. These relationships depend on interpreted Petri nets structures such as T-invariants, P-Invariants, attribution and distribution places. Thus, the approach herein presented exploits the interpreted Petri nets structural information in order to determine the structural sequence detectability of an interpreted Petri net.Consejo Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnologí

With California’s Proposition 187 in 1994 as the backdrop for the relationship between Latinos and the Republican Party, this article explores the impact that the 2012 Presidential Election had on Latinos and the growing influence of Latinos in American Politics. I look at the historical roots of the relationship between the GOP and Latinos and the short road that brought us to the apogee of anti-Latino rhetoric throughout the 2012 Presidential Election and the GOP primary elections. I discuss whether or not the immigration issue has formed a structural barrier to the GOP’s relationship Latinos. Next, this article looks at the outreach effort by the GOP, in particular the missteps and miscommunication between Republican Latino organizations and the Romney campaign. Last, I look at the results of the election and discuss what this could mean for the future of Latino politics and for the country. I also briefly look at the structural features of our electoral system that is hampering the GOPs ability to reach out to Latinos. I conclude with a short discussion on what the GOP can do to change this and how the Democrats should consider responding.

Modular allylation of C(sp3)-H bonds by combining decatungstate photocatalysis and HWE olefination in flow

The late-stage introduction of allyl groups provides an opportunity to synthetic organic chemists for subsequent diversification, furnishing a rapid access to new chemical space. Here, we report the development of a modular synthetic sequence for the allylation of strong aliphatic C(sp(3))–H bonds. Our sequence features the merger of two distinct steps to accomplish this goal, including a photocatalytic Hydrogen Atom Transfer and an ensuing Horner–Wadsworth–Emmons (HWE) reaction. This practical protocol enables the modular and scalable allylation of valuable building blocks and has been applied to structurally complex molecules

    Conical defects in growing sheets

A growing or shrinking disc will adopt a conical shape, its intrinsic geometry characterized by a surplus angle sese at the apex. If growth is slow, the cone will find its equilibrium. Whereas this is trivial if se<=0se <= 0, the disc can fold into one of a discrete infinite number of states if sese is positive. We construct these states in the regime where bending dominates, determine their energies and how stress is distributed in them. For each state a critical value of sese is identified beyond which the cone touches itself. Before this occurs, all states are stable; the ground state has two-fold symmetry.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, LaTeX, RevTeX style. New version corresponds to the one published in PR

Controversies in Exit Polling: Implementing a Racially Stratified Homogenous Precinct Approach

In November 2000, exit poll interviews with voters in Florida indicated that Al Gore won the state. As a result, many television networks declared Gore the winner of Florida, a pivotal state to winning the presidency in 2000. Only a few hours later, the first vote tallies from the Florida Secretary of State\u27s office revealed that George W. Bush was in fact leading in Florida. After 45 days of recounts and lawsuits, it was clear that the exit polls were wrong; Bush had won the state by the narrowest of margins. As a result of the flawed exit poll the media and pollsters scoured and reanalyzed the methodology used in 2000 to prepare and correct for the 2004 presidential election. The old system, Voter News Service (VNS) was scrapped entirely, and Edison-Mitofsky Research was chosen to implement a new and more accurate national exit poll in 2004 by a consortium of news organizations retained by the Associated Press called the National Election Pool (NEP). What happened? Exit poll results from Edison-Mitofsky showed John Kerry ahead in Ohio, Florida, and New Mexico—all states which he lost to Bush in 2004.

    A triangle model of criminality

This paper is concerned with a quantitative model describing the interaction of three sociological species, termed as owners, criminals and security guards, and denoted by X, Y and Z respectively. In our model, Y is a predator of the species X, and so is Z with respect to Y . Moreover, Z can also be thought of as a predator of X, since this last population is required to bear the costs of maintaining Z. We propose a system of three ordinary differential equations to account for the time evolution of X(t), Y (t) and Z(t) according to our previous assumptions. Out of the various parameters that appear in that system, we select two of them, denoted by H, and h, which are related with the efficiency of the security forces as a control parameter in our discussion. To begin with, we consider the case of large and constant owners population, which allows us to reduce (3)–(5) to a bidimensional system for Y (t) and Z(t). As a preliminary step, this situation is first discussed under the additional assumption that Y (t) + Z(t) is constant. A bifurcation study is then performed in terms of H and h, which shows the key role played by the rate of casualties in Y and Z, that results particularly in a possible onset of bistability. When the previous restriction is dropped, we observe the appearance of oscillatory behaviours in the full two-dimensional system. We finally provide a exploratory study of the complete model (3)–(5), where a number of bifurcations appear as parameter H changes, and the corresponding solutions behaviours are described
