Sparse Ridge Fusion For Linear Regression

    Get PDF
For a linear regression, the traditional technique deals with a case where the number of observations n more than the number of predictor variables p (n \u3e p). In the case n \u3c p, the classical method fails to estimate the coefficients. A solution of the problem is the case of correlated predictors is provided in this thesis. A new regularization and variable selection is proposed under the name of Sparse Ridge Fusion (SRF). In the case of highly correlated predictor, the simulated examples and a real data show that the SRF always outperforms the lasso, eleastic net, and the S-Lasso, and the results show that the SRF selects more predictor variables than the sample size n while the maximum selected variables by lasso is n size

Summary This article has two objectives. The first is to study the theory of the Theatre of Oppressed of Augusto Boal, and the second is to analyze the techniques used by the theatre group, La Rueda: Social Theatre, to fulfill the main basis of this theory. The innovation of the theory of Augusto Boal lies in not being a conventional didactic theatre that aims to direct the audience towards the ideal prototype in accordance with social and political norms. It is a pedagogical theatre where both actors and audience learn. Its main basis is the destruction of the fourth wall between the actor and the spectator in order to achieve social transformation and the promotion of the marginalized and oppressed people. To carry out these two objectives, we have chosen a play of the Spanish theatre group “La Rueda: Social Theatre”, called “Nomadic Neighborhoods”. This play discusses the problem of illegal immigration in Spain, through presenting the suffering and oppression of two young Africans whose destinies are tragic. The objective of this play is not cathartic, it represents to the audience the mechanisms of the production of oppression, so that the audience puts the tactics to avoid it. Quiver bundles and wall crossing for chains

Holomorphic chains on a Riemann surface arise naturally as fixed points of the natural C-action on the moduli space of Higgs bundles. In this paper we associate a new quiver bundle to the Hom-complex of two chains, and prove that stability of the chains implies stability of this new quiver bundle. Our approach uses the Hitchin-Kobayashi correspondence for quiver bundles. Moreover, we use our result to give a new proof of a key lemma on chains (due to alvarez-Consul-Garcia-Prada-Schmitt), which has been important in the study of Higgs bundle moduli; this proof relies on stability and thus avoids the direct use of the chain vortex equations

Objective: The present investigation formulated in order to identify and quantify of caffeic and chlorogenic acid content in Ammi majus seed by thin layer chromatography (TLC) and high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC).Methods: In the present study identification and quantification of caffeic and chlorogenic acid in Ammi majus seeds were investigated. Identification of these phenolic acids were done by using thin layer chromatography performed on a sheet of aluminium plates of silica gel as a stationary phase, suitable solvent systems which is Toluene: Ethyl acetate: Formic acid: Water (15:90:5:5), also use UV light and 5 % Fecl3 for detection. This identification was further augmented by using high performance liquid chromatography and then quantified by using C18 column, isocratic mobile phase (acetonitrile: water (0.5% orthophosphoric acid) 15:85) and UV/Visible 320 nm detector. Results: Thin layer chromatography analysis of seed extracts revealed the presence of caffeic and chlorogenic acid in Ammi majus seed. The HPLC method was validated for linearity, accuracy, precision and limit of detection and quantification. The percentage of caffeic acid 0.031% in higher quantity than chlorogenic acid. Calibration curve was linear over concentration 5-200 µg/ml with correlation coefficients 0.998 and 0.999 for caffeic and chlorogenic acid. The relative standard deviation of the method was less than 2% for intra and inter-day precision assay and the average recoveries were between 97.47-101.92%. The proposed method was found to be linear, accurate, and precise. Conclusion: This study confirms the presence of caffeic and chlorogenic acid in Ammi majus seed extracts and the percentage of caffeic acid higher than chlorogenic acid.Â

Homotopy type of moduli spaces of G-Higgs bundles and reducibility of the nilpotent cone

Let G be a real reductive Lie group, and H-C the complexification of its maximal compact subgroup H subset of G. We consider classes of semistable G-Higgs bundles over a Riemann surface X of genus g >= 2 whose underlying H-C-principal bundle is unstable. This allows us to find obstructions to a deformation retract from the moduli space of G-Higgs bundles over X to the moduli space of H-C-bundles over X, in contrast with the situation when g = 1, and to show reducibility of the nilpotent cone of the moduli space of G-Higgs bundles, for G complex

Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the cytotoxic effects of Cigarette Smoke on the human peripheral blood lymphocytes in the presence of stimulated or non-stimulated saliva in an in vitro model. Methods and Materials: Ten healthy volunteers in the age range of 21 to 29 were selected and samples of peripheral blood lymphocytes and saliva (whole and stimulated saliva) collected. Peripheral blood lymphocytes suspensions (PBS) were taken and exposed to 6 different media. Samples were collected from all media at both 20 and 80 minute time points. The survival rates of PBL were then determined at both 20 and 80 minute time points. Results: The cell survival rates following exposure to cigarette smoke (CS) in the presence of PBS supplemented with whole or stimulated saliva were significantly lower at 80 minutes when compared with the 20 minute rates (P<0.05).Conclusion: Tobacco effects were significantly increased in the presence of saliva especially stimulated saliva
