Process Variation-Aware Compact Model of Strip Waveguides for Photonic Circuit Simulation

We report a novel process variation-aware compact model of strip waveguides that is suitable for circuit-level simulation of waveguide-based process design kit (PDK) elements. The model is shown to describe both loss and -- using a novel expression for the thermo-optic effect in high index contrast materials -- the thermo-optic behavior of strip waveguides. A novel group extraction method enables modeling the effective index's (neffn_{\mathrm{eff}}) sensitivity to local process variations without the presumption of variation source. Use of Euler-bend Mach-Zehnder interferometers (MZIs) fabricated in a 300~mm wafer run allow model parameter extraction at widths up to 2.5~μ\mum (highly multi-mode) with strong suppression of higher-order mode excitation. Experimental results prove the reported model can self-consistently describe waveguide phase, loss, and thermo-optic behavior across all measured devices over an unprecedented range of optical bandwidth, waveguide widths, and temperatures

Should Endovascular Repair Be Reimbursed for Low Risk Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Patients? Evidence from Ontario, Canada

    Get PDF
Background. This paper presents unpublished clinical and economic data associated with open surgical repair (OSR) in low risk (LR) patients and how it compares with EVAR and OSR in high risk (HR) patients with an AAA > 5.5 cm. Design. Data from a 1-year prospective observational study was used to compare EVAR in HR patients versus OSR in HR and LR patients. Results. Between 2003 and 2005, 140 patients were treated with EVAR and 195 with OSR (HR: 52; LR: 143). The 1-year mortality rate with EVAR was statistically lower than HR OSR patients and comparable to LR OSR patients. One-year health-related quality of life was lower in the EVAR patients compared to OSR patients. EVAR was cost-effective compared to OSR HR but not when compared to OSR LR patients. Conclusions. Despite a similar clinical effectiveness, these results suggest that, at the current price, EVAR is more expensive than open repair for low risk patients

Attrition among families of divorce: Patterns in an outpatient psychiatric population

The accelerated divorce rate has greatly increased the number of children of divorce. In addition, the children and families of divorce are proportionately overrepresented in populations seeking child guidance and psychiatric services. However, the patterns in the use of such services by these families has been unexamined. In our study we find no differences in the use of outpatient psychiatric services between families where both biological parents are present and families of divorce. A closer look at the divorced families reveals that recently divorced mother-headed families more frequently interrupt both the evaluation and treatment phases of clinic contact. Several clinical patterns are described which help explain the finding and it is suggested that the traditional child guidance model may not be the most suitable intervention modality in working with these families.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/44293/1/10591_2004_Article_BF00927093.pd

Distribution and Regulation of the Mobile Genetic Element-Encoded Phenol-Soluble Modulin PSM-mec in Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus

    Get PDF
The phenol-soluble modulin PSM-mec is the only known staphylococcal toxin that is encoded on a mobile antibiotic resistance determinant, namely the staphylococcal cassette chromosome (SCC) element mec encoding resistance to methicillin. Here we show that the psm-mec gene is found frequently among methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) strains of SCCmec types II, III, and VIII, and is a conserved part of the class A mec gene complex. Controlled expression of AgrA versus RNAIII in agr mutants of all 3 psm-mec-positive SCCmec types demonstrated that expression of psm-mec, which is highly variable, is controlled by AgrA in an RNAIII-independent manner. Furthermore, psm-mec isogenic deletion mutants showed only minor changes in PSMα peptide production and unchanged (or, as previously described, diminished) virulence compared to the corresponding wild-type strains in a mouse model of skin infection. This indicates that the recently reported regulatory impact of the psm-mec locus on MRSA virulence, which is opposite to that of the PSM-mec peptide and likely mediated by a regulatory RNA, is minor when analyzed in the original strain background. Our study gives new insight in the distribution, regulation, and role in virulence of the PSM-mec peptide and the psm-mec gene locus

Mechanistically-guided materials chemistry: synthesis of new ternary nitrides, CaZrN2_2 and CaHfN2_2

Recent computational studies have predicted many new ternary nitrides, revealing synthetic opportunities in this underexplored phase space. However, synthesizing new ternary nitrides is difficult, in part because intermediate and product phases often have high cohesive energies that inhibit diffusion. Here, we report the synthesis of two new phases, calcium zirconium nitride (CaZrN2_2) and calcium hafnium nitride (CaHfN2_2), by solid state metathesis reactions between Ca3_3N2_2 and MMCl4_4 (MM = Zr, Hf). Although the reaction nominally proceeds to the target phases in a 1:1 ratio of the precursors via Ca3_3N2_2 + MMCl4_4 \rightarrow CaMMN2_2 + 2 CaCl2_2, reactions prepared this way result in Ca-poor materials (CaxM2x_xM_{2-x}N2_2, x<1x<1). A small excess of Ca3_3N2_2 (ca. 20 mol\%) is needed to yield stoichiometric CaMMN2_2, as confirmed by high-resolution synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction. In situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction studies reveal that nominally stoichiometric reactions produce Zr3+^{3+} intermediates early in the reaction pathway, and the excess Ca3_3N2_2 is needed to reoxidize Zr3+^{3+} intermediates back to the Zr4+^{4+} oxidation state of CaZrN2_2. Analysis of computationally-derived chemical potential diagrams rationalizes this synthetic approach and its contrast from the synthesis of MgZrN2_2. These findings additionally highlight the utility of in situ diffraction studies and computational thermochemistry to provide mechanistic guidance for synthesis

Insulin-Regulated Trafficking of GLUT4 Requires Ubiquitination

    Get PDF
A major consequence of insulin binding its receptor on fat and muscle cells is translocation of the facilitative glucose transporter GLUT4 from an intracellular store to the cell surface where it serves to clear glucose from the bloodstream. Sorting of GLUT4 into its insulin-sensitive store requires the GGA [Golgi-localized, γ-ear-containing, ADP ribosylation factor (ARF)-binding] adaptor proteins, but the signal on GLUT4 to direct this sorting step is unknown. Here, we have identified a role for ubiquitination of GLUT4 in this process. We demonstrate that GLUT4 is ubiquitinated in 3T3-L1 adipocytes, and that a ubiquitin-resistant version fails to translocate to the cell surface of these cells in response to insulin. Our data support a model in which ubiquitination acts as a signal for the trafficking of GLUT4 from the endosomal/trans-Golgi network (TGN) system into its intracellular storage compartment, from where it is mobilized to the cell surface in response to insulin
