    Structural Identification of an Elevated Water Tower

    Elevated water tanks are generally located at higher elevations within a particular geographic area. The location and height of these structures often makes them desirable for installing wireless and cellular communications antennas. The impact of this practice on the long-term serviceability performance of the primary structure is not clear and could be an important consideration deserving further analysis. This paper presents a case study of an elevated water tank that was motivated by this particular consideration. The structure had been retrofitted with cellular antennas during its service and later experienced fatigue cracking at the fill pipe-tank interface. The owner wished to determine if the addition of the cellular antennas had contributed to this damage. This paper presents a structural identification program that was implemented to determine how wind, water level, and antenna modifications affect the water tank

    Deciding to Divert: Domestic and International Sources of Constraints on Leader Decision-making

    Domestic unrest is a constant feature in the international system. Aside from the impact unrest has on domestic populations, political turmoil also has consequences for other states in the international system. A long-held belief, backed by anecdotal evidence, is that leaders use aggressive foreign policy to divert public attention in periods of declining domestic political fortunes. However, consistent evidence for this pattern of behavior has not emerged across large-N analyses in the extant diversionary literature. This dissertation advances the search for evidence of diversion by assessing the likelihood leaders of various regime types will divert, comparing not only non-democracies with democracies, but also various non-democratic regime types to one another for the first time in recent diversionary literature. Diversion is one of several responses to domestic unrest. Leaders may also choose repression, policy concessions, or resignation from office. Few arguments in the extant literature include more than one alternative, and even fewer, if any, consider resignation. The same institutions defining a regime’s type are sources for opportunities and constraints leaders face in pursuing these latter three options. Regime type, therefore, is a domestic factor influencing the likelihood these alternative options are selected as a response, and in turn, the likelihood diversion is selected. However, diversion is unique among the response options in that it requires an additional state. The opportunity for diversion must also be considered. Rival environments are identifiable as opportunity-rich contexts in which the effect of unrest on dispute initiation is expected to be observed. The results of analyses somewhat support theoretical arguments asserting domestic political institutions influence diversionary behavior. The impact of domestic unrest on the likelihood of diversion does vary across regime types. Results from analyses including both domestic and international factors indicate rival context indicate the relationship between regime type, unrest, rivalry, and initiation is complex

    Modeling the impact of climate change and land use change scenarios on soil erosion at the Minab Dam Watershed

    Climate and land use change can influence susceptibility to erosion and consequently land degradation. The aim of this study was to investigate in the baseline and a future period, the land use and climate change effects on soil erosion at an important dam watershed occupying a strategic position on the narrow Strait of Hormuz. The future climate change at the study area was inferred using statistical downscaling and validated by the Canadian earth system model (CanESM2). The future land use change was also simulated using the Markov chain and artificial neural network, and the Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation was adopted to estimate soil loss under climate and land use change scenarios. Results show that rainfall erosivity (R factor) will increase under all Representative Concentration Pathway (RCP) scenarios. The highest amount of R was 40.6 MJ mm ha(-1) h(-1)y(-1) in 2030 under RPC 2.6. Future land use/land cover showed rangelands turning into agricultural lands, vegetation cover degradation and an increased soil cover among others. The change of C and R factors represented most of the increase of soil erosion and sediment production in the study area during the future period. The highest erosion during the future period was predicted to reach 14.5 t ha(-1) y(-1), which will generate 5.52 t ha(-1) y(-1) sediment. The difference between estimated and observed sediment was 1.42 t ha(-1) year(-1) at the baseline period.
