Discussion article : pragmatic markers, interjections and discourse
Aquest article s’ocupa d’aspectes relatius als marcadors pragmà tics, les interjeccions i l’anà lisi del discurs al voltant de tres contribucions a aquest volum de la revista. Després d’una clarificació terminològica inicial en l’à rea dels marcadors pragmà tics en general i dels marcadors del discurs més especÃficament, introduïm una perspectiva sociolingüÃstica interaccional sobre els marcadors pragmà tics en contrast amb l’enfocament de gestió adaptativa del discurs que proposa Romero. En segon lloc, tractem el tema de les dades escrites vs. les orals en relació amb els articles de Fernández-Villanueva i de Matamala, i focalitzem en les interjeccions i la distribució que tenen, en particular en el tema de les funcions pragmà tiques del marcador del discurs oh en anglès discutit en l’article de Matamala. Finalment, ampliem el debat a la consideració general de les interjeccions com a marcadors pragmà tics.This article addresses a range of issues centering on pragmatic markers, interjections and the analysis of discourse in relation to three contributions in this volume of the journal. After an initial clarification of terminology in the area of pragmatic markers in general and discourse markers more specifically, I introduce an Interactional Sociolinguistic perspective on pragmatic markers by contrast with the Adaptive Management in Discourse approach of Romero. Then I take up the matter of written versus spoken data with relation to the articles by Fernández-Villanueva and Matamala. I go on to focus on interjections and their distribution, in particular the discourse marker functions of oh in English with relation to the article by Matamala. Finally, I broaden the discussion to a general consideration of interjections as pragmatic markers
Ratifying and rejecting listener assessments in the course of multi-unit turns
This article investigates the effects listener assessments can have on the course of a multi-unit turn. Specifically, listener assessments can elicit responses from the primary speaker and thus generate talk in their own right. The primary speaker may orient to the content of listener assessments and respond to them in various (positive or negative) ways, suspending the multi-unit turn in progress to comment or altering the direction of the turn. Shared assessments can lead to higher involvement and increased rapport with consequences for subsequent interaction between the participants. Rejections of listener assessments are much less frequent than ratifications: rejection of a listener assessment expresses the teller\u27s refusal to have it count as part of the overall evaluation of the multi-unit turn in progress
