Pattern Recognition of a Gravitational Wave Pulsar Signal
The direct detection of Gravitational Waves (GWs) is one of the most challenging problems in experimental gravitation today. It warrants the use of highly advanced large laser interferometers such as LIGO, VIRGO, LISA, TAMA 300, GEO 600 and AIGO. The analysis of the data from such instruments requires and combines the expertise from a multitude of scientific disciplines. The verification of a detected signal demands an effective way to distinguish the source signal from the background noise. Such a study is required for an all-sky search to determine the φ and θ angles on the sky of gravitational wave sources and their frequencies. In this thesis is presented analytical solutions and associated numerical approximations for the inner products employed in matched filtering using templates, a form of pattern recognition, applied to a GW pulsar signal. An exact closed-form expression for the inner products is rigourously derived using the special functions of mathematical physics. The inner products involve reciprocal Eulerian gamma functions, which occur in the study of many diverse phenomena. The spectral noise density of the VIRGO GW detector is shown to be amenable to analysis. Spectral noise densities like those for LIGO and GEO 600, although different and in a slightly more restricted frequency band, are likewise amenable. Numerical computation of the inner products, estimates of the computational time of the solution on serial and parallel computers, and the efficiency of the resulting algorithms are studied. The fitting factor that indicates the goodness of fit between a signal and a template is given in closed-form and computed numerically. The numerical plots display an approximate symmetry in the template φ and θ domain. Threshold crossing statistics are found, and the probability that a template is within a given radius of the signal is studied
Towards an Automatic Dictation System for Translators: the TransTalk Project
Professional translators often dictate their translations orally and have
them typed afterwards. The TransTalk project aims at automating the second part
of this process. Its originality as a dictation system lies in the fact that
both the acoustic signal produced by the translator and the source text under
translation are made available to the system. Probable translations of the
source text can be predicted and these predictions used to help the speech
recognition system in its lexical choices. We present the results of the first
prototype, which show a marked improvement in the performance of the speech

Response of wild bee communities to beekeeping, urbanization, and flower availability
Wild bees provide pollination services and are currently declining at the global scale. A potential cause for this decline is competitive interactions with domestic honey bees. Urban beekeeping, a fairly new activity, is rapidly gaining popularity. In contrast with agricultural and natural areas, the extent of competition between honey bees and wild bees in urban areas is unclear. The objectives of this study were to quantify the impact of honey bees, urbanization, and the availability of floral resources on wild bee communities. We hypothesized that honey bees exert negative impacts on wild bees, that floral resources favor wild bee communities and mitigate the negative impacts of competition with honey bees, and that the influence of heat islands, used as a proxy for urbanization, varies between wild bees with their functional traits (nesting behavior). We tested these hypotheses with a data set of 19,077 wild bee specimens collected using colored pan-traps at 25 urban sites in 2012 and 2013. We investigated community and population patterns after accounting for imperfect detection probability. We found no evidence of competition between wild and domesticated bees. Our analyses indicate mixed effects of urban heat islands across species and positive effects of floral resources. We conclude that cities can allow the coexistence of urban beekeeping and wild bees under moderate hive densities. However, it will remain crucial to further investigate the competitive interactions between wild and honey bees to determine the threshold of hive densities beyond which competition could occur

Elevated Brain Cannabinoid CB1 Receptor Availability in Posttraumatic Stress Disorder: A Positron Emission Tomography Study
Endocannabinoids and their attending cannabinoid type 1 receptor (CB1) have been implicated in animal models of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However, their specific role has not been studied in people with PTSD. Herein, we present an in vivo imaging study using positron emission tomography (PET) and the CB1-selective radioligand [11C]OMAR in individuals with PTSD, and healthy controls with lifetime histories of trauma (trauma controls [TC]) and those without such histories (healthy controls [HC]). Untreated individuals with PTSD (N=25) with non-combat trauma histories, and TC (N=12) and HC (N=23) participated in a magnetic resonance (MR) imaging scan and a resting PET scan with the CB1 receptor antagonist radiotracer [11C]OMAR, which measures volume of distribution (VT) linearly related to CB1 receptor availability. Peripheral levels of anandamide, 2-arachidonoylglycerol (2-AG), oleoylethanolamide (OEA), palmitoylethanolamide (PEA), and cortisol were also assessed. In the PTSD group, relative to the HC and TC groups, we found elevated brain-wide [11C]OMAR VT values (F(2,53)=7.96, p=.001; 19.5% and 14.5% higher, respectively) which were most pronounced in women (F(1,53)=5.52, p=.023). Anandamide concentrations were reduced in the PTSD relative to the TC (53.1% lower) and HC (58.2% lower) groups. Cortisol levels were lower in the PTSD and TC groups relative to the HC group. Three biomarkers examined collectively—OMAR VT, anandamide, and cortisol—correctly classified nearly 85% of PTSD cases. These results suggest that abnormal CB1 receptor-mediated anandamide signaling is implicated in the etiology of PTSD, and provide a promising neurobiological model to develop novel, evidence-based pharmacotherapies for this disorder
Differential effect of sleep deprivation on place cell representations, sleep architecture, and memory in young and old mice
Poor sleep quality is associated with age-related cognitive decline, and whether reversal of these alterations is possible is unknown. In this study, we report how sleep deprivation (SD) affects hippocampal representations, sleep patterns, and memory in young and old mice. After training in a hippocampus-dependent object-place recognition (OPR) task, control animals sleep ad libitum, although experimental animals undergo 5 h of SD, followed by recovery sleep. Young controls and old SD mice exhibit successful OPR memory, whereas young SD and old control mice are impaired. Successful performance is associated with two cellular phenotypes: (1) context cells, which remain stable throughout training and testing, and (2) object configuration cells, which remap when objects are introduced to the context and during testing. Additionally, effective memory correlates with spindle counts during non-rapid eye movement (NREM)/rapid eye movement (REM) sigma transitions. These results suggest SD may serve to ameliorate age-related memory deficits and allow hippocampal representations to adapt to changing environments
Differences in IV alcohol-induced dopamine release in the ventral striatum of social drinkers and nontreatment-seeking alcoholics
Background
Striatal dopamine (DA) has been implicated in alcohol use disorders, but it is still unclear whether or not alcohol can induce dopamine release in social drinkers. Furthermore, no data exist on dopamine responses to alcohol in dependent drinkers. We sought to characterize the DA responses to alcohol intoxication in moderately large samples of social drinkers (SD) and nontreatment-seeking alcoholics (NTS).
Methods
Twenty-four SD and twenty-one NTS received two [11C]raclopride (RAC) PET scans; one at rest, and one during an intravenous alcohol infusion, with a prescribed ascent to a target breath alcohol concentration (BrAC), at which it was then “clamped.” The alcohol clamp was started 5 min after scan start, with a linear increase in BrAC over 15 min to the target of 80 mg%, the legal threshold for intoxication. Target BrAC was maintained for 30 min. Voxel-wise binding potential (BPND) was estimated with MRTM2.
Results
IV EtOH induced significant increases in DA in the right ventral striatum in NTS, but not SD. No decreases in DA were observed in either group.
Conclusions
Alcohol intoxication results in distinct anatomic profiles of DA responses in SD and NTS, suggesting that in NTS, the striatal DA system may process effects of alcohol intoxication differently than in SD
Pseudo-reference regions for glial imaging with (11)C-PBR28:investigation in two clinical cohorts
none14The translocator protein (TSPO) is a commonly used imaging target to investigate neuroinflammation. While TSPO imaging demonstrates great promise, its signal exhibits substantial interindividual variability, which needs to be accounted for to uncover group effects that are truly reflective of neuroimmune activation. Recent evidence suggests that relative metrics computed using pseudo-reference approaches can minimize within-group variability, and increase sensitivity to detect physiologically meaningful group differences. Here, we evaluated various ratio approaches for TSPO imaging and compared them with standard kinetic modeling techniques, analyzing two different disease cohorts. Patients with chronic low back pain (cLBP) or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and matching healthy controls received (11)C-PBR28 PET scans. Occipital cortex, cerebellum and whole brain were first evaluated as candidate pseudo-reference regions by testing for the absence of group differences in Standardized Uptake Value (SUV) and distribution volume (VT) estimated with an arterial input function (AIF). SUV from target regions (cLBP study - thalamus; ALS study - precentral gyrus) was normalized with SUV from candidate pseudo-reference regions to obtain SUVRoccip, SUVRcereb, and SUVRWB The sensitivity to detect group differences in target regions was compared using various SUVR approaches, as well as distribution volume ratio (DVR) estimated with (blDVR) or without AIF (refDVR), and VT Additional voxelwise SUVR group analyses were performed. We observed no significant group differences in pseudo-reference VT or SUV, excepting whole-brain VT, which was higher in cLBP patients than controls. Target VT elevations in patients (P = 0.028 and 0.051 in cLBP and ALS, respectively) were similarly detected by SUVRoccip and SUVRWB, and by refDVR and blDVR (less reliably by SUVRcereb). In voxelwise analyses, SUVRoccip, but not SUVRcereb, identified regional group differences initially observed with SUVRWB, and in additional areas suspected to be affected in the pathology examined. All ratio metrics were highly cross-correlated, but generally were not associated with VT While important caveats need to be considered when using relative metrics, ratio analyses appear to be similarly sensitive to detect pathology-related group differences in (11)C-PBR28 signal as classic kinetic modeling techniques. The ICOMOS International Scientific Committee for
Stone (ISCS) is providing a forum for the interchange of
experience, ideas, and knowledge in the field of stone
conservation. ISCS aims at facilitating the publication,
dissemination and presentation of state of the art
reviews on pre-identified issues. Simplification and
demystification of scientific information for practitioners are also part of the main goals of the group.
In studies on stone deterioration and conservation, terminological confusions lead to major communication
problems between scientists, conservators and practitioners. In this context, it is of primary importance to set
up a common language; if degradation patterns can be
shown, named and described, then they can be recognised and compared with similar ones in a more accurate
way in further investigations.
The ISCS glossary constitutes an important tool for
scientific discussions on decay phenomena and processes. It is also an excellent basis for tutorials on stone
deterioration. It is based on the careful examination of
pre-existing glossaries of English terms. It does not aim
at replacing these glossaries, often set up originally in a
language other than English, and for most of them done
to a high standard.
As President of ICOMOS I would like to congratulate the
International Scientific Committee for Stone and its
President VĂ©ronique Verges-Belmin for the results of
years of research presented in this publication. Stone
conservation is a crucial topic in monument conservation and many of our National Committees all over the
world hope for advice and help from the specialists
familiar with traditional and modern methods of
conservation. The Illustrated Glossary on Stone
Deterioration Patterns offers a wide range of suggestions and practical advice. Probably, after the English-French version becomes available the Glossary will also
be translated into other languages. In view of the accelerating decay of our stone monuments worldwide this
is an exemplary contribution which will promote the
