    Heteroduplex analysis of tra delta f' plasmids and the mechanism of their formation

    Four tra delta FargG+ plasmids, derived from matings between Hfr AB312 and a recA recipient, have been shown to have deletions of at least 50% of the F genome, including the region in which the tra genes map. The mutant plasmids do contain the F genes required for plasmid maintenance. Correlations can be made between, on the one hand, the F genes present on the tradelta F' plasmids and the F genes transferred early by an Hfr donor, and, on the other hand, the F genes deleted from the tradelta F' plasmids and the F genes transferred late by an Hfr donor. A biased representation of proximally and distally transferred chromosomal markers among the tradelta F' elements was also demonstrated. Taken Taken together, the asymmetrical representation of Hfr genes and the cis dominance of the Tra phenotype of these mutants can best be explained by the hypothesis that the tradelta F' plasmids are formed by repliconation of the transferred exogenote in a recA recipient

    A Social Disorganization Theory of County Crime Rates in Minnesota

    This analysis is an application of social disorganization theory for understanding variations in county crime rates in the state of Minnesota. Social disorganization is seen as the breakdown of community institutions of social control, where indicators of breakdown included such things as family disruption and over-crowding. With few exceptions, measures of social disorganization were found to he correlated with county crime rates, with three variables as showing up as especially important; these are percent of children not living with both parents, per capita alcohol tax collected in the county, and net-migration. Three variables—percent of persons with incomes less than $5000, median income, and percent of adults with a high school education—were correlated with crime in directions opposite than what was predicted. Limitations and suggestions for further research are also provided

    ECO and RESOLVE: Galaxy Disk Growth in Environmental Context

    We study the relationships between galaxy environments and galaxy properties related to disk (re)growth, considering two highly complete samples that are approximately baryonic mass limited into the high-mass dwarf galaxy regime, the Environmental COntext (ECO) catalog (data release herein) and the B-semester region of the REsolved Spectroscopy Of a Local VolumE (RESOLVE) survey. We quantify galaxy environments using both group identification and smoothed galaxy density field methods. We use by-eye and quantitative morphological classifications plus atomic gas content measurements and estimates. We find that blue early-type (E/S0) galaxies, gas-dominated galaxies, and UV-bright disk host galaxies all become distinctly more common below group halo mass ~10^11.5 Msun, implying that this low group halo mass regime may be a preferred regime for significant disk growth activity. We also find that blue early-type and blue late-type galaxies inhabit environments of similar group halo mass at fixed baryonic mass, consistent with a scenario in which blue early types can regrow late-type disks. In fact, we find that the only significant difference in the typical group halo mass inhabited by different galaxy classes is for satellite galaxies with different colors, where at fixed baryonic mass red early and late types have higher typical group halo masses than blue early and late types. More generally, we argue that the traditional morphology-environment relation (i.e., that denser environments tend to have more early types) can be largely attributed to the morphology-galaxy mass relation for centrals and the color-environment relation for satellites.Comment: 26 pages and 28 figures; v2 contains minor figure and text updates to match final published version in ApJ; ECO data table release now available at http://resolve.astro.unc.edu/pages/data.ph

    Architecture, Voltage and Components for a Turboelectric Distributed Propulsion Electric Grid

    The development of a wholly superconducting turboelectric distributed propulsion system presents hide unique opportunities for the aerospace industry. However, this transition from normally conducting systems to superconducting systems significantly increases the equipment complexity necessary to manage the electrical power systems. Due to the low technology readiness level (TRL) nature of all components and systems, current Turboelectric Distributed Propulsion (TeDP) technology developments are driven by an ambiguous set of system-level electrical integration standards for an airborne microgrid system (Figure 1). While multiple decades' worth of advancements are still required for concept realization, current system-level studies are necessary to focus the technology development, target specific technological shortcomings, and enable accurate prediction of concept feasibility and viability. An understanding of the performance sensitivity to operating voltages and an early definition of advantageous voltage regulation standards for unconventional airborne microgrids will allow for more accurate targeting of technology development. Propulsive power-rated microgrid systems necessitate the introduction of new aircraft distribution system voltage standards. All protection, distribution, control, power conversion, generation, and cryocooling equipment are affected by voltage regulation standards. Information on the desired operating voltage and voltage regulation is required to determine nominal and maximum currents for sizing distribution and fault isolation equipment, developing machine topologies and machine controls, and the physical attributes of all component shielding and insulation.     Topology and Evolution of Technology Innovation Networks

    The web of relations linking technological innovation can be fairly described in terms of patent citations. The resulting patent citation network provides a picture of the large-scale organization of innovations and its time evolution. Here we study the patterns of change of patents registered by the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). We show that the scaling behavior exhibited by this network is consistent with a preferential attachment mechanism together with a Weibull-shaped aging term. Such attachment kernel is shared by scientific citation networks, thus indicating an universal type of mechanism linking ideas and designs and their evolution.     Voltage based current compensation converter control for power electronic interfaced distribution networks in future aircraft

    Superconductors have a potential application in future turboelectric distributed propulsion (TeDP) aircraft and present significant new challenges for protection system design. Electrical faults and cooling system failures can lead to temperature rises within a superconducting distribution network, which necessitates a reduction or temporary curtailment of current to loads to prevent thermal runaway occurring within the cables. This scenario is undesirable in TeDP aircraft applications where the loads may be flight-critical propulsion motors. This article proposes a power management and control method that exploits the fast-acting measurement and response capabilities of the power electronic interfaces within the distribution network to maximize current supply to critical loads, reducing the impact of a temperature rise event in the superconducting distribution network. This new algorithm uses the detection of a resistive voltage in combination with a model-based controller that estimates the operating temperature of the affected superconducting cable to adapt the output current limit of the associated power electronic converter. To demonstrate the effectiveness of this method and its impact on wider system stability, the algorithm is applied to a simulated voltage-source converter supplied aircraft dc superconducting distribution network with representative propulsion motor loads
