A Follow-Up Study of a Primary Prevention Program Targeting Childhood Depression
Children have not historically been the subject of research focusing on internalizing disorders (i.e., childhood depression), even though childhood depression continues to be viewed as one of the most prevalent affective problem within this population. Over the past two decades, a small portion of that literature describes prevention efforts in public schools. There has been a growing body of literature centered on childhood depression. However, there are only three studies that report on longitudinal findings that have taken a primary prevention approach.
The present study was a follow-up investigation to delineate the effects of a school-based primary prevention program. The original study utilized a social/ interpersonal and cognitive-behavioral model incorporated into the health education curriculum of the school.
The results of the study suggest that the students continued to report normal to low levels of depressive symptoms at one-year follow-up . The results also suggest that students maintained the social skills gained during the intervention at the one-year followup. In addition, reports of depressive symptomatology slightly declined from posttest to one-year follow-up
A qualitative case exploration of the use of image political advertising in the Taiwanese presidential election of 2000
By 'image' advertising we refer to television and press advertising that applies brand marketing techniques to political campaigns. Such advertising tends to contain appealing imagery and symbolism rather than factual, policy-based appeals. In the Taiwanese presidential election of 2000 the main opposition party, the Democratic Progressive Party, used image advertising on TV before their widely unexpected victory. This was a major departure for the DPP who until then were typically associated with poorly resourced, controversial but ineffective election advertising. This paper examines the Taiwanese political context and briefly reviews relevant research literature before discussing this particular case of political advertising. The paper adopts a mixed interpretive approach drawing on a quantitative analysis of poll data, a qualitative focus group and secondary sources to seek insights into the voter impact this image political advertisement may have had
Long-range quantum gates using dipolar crystals
We propose the use of dipolar spin chains to enable long-range quantum logic
between distant qubits. In our approach, an effective interaction between
remote qubits is achieved by adiabatically following the ground state of the
dipolar chain across the paramagnet to crystal phase transition. We demonstrate
that the proposed quantum gate is particularly robust against disorder and
derive scaling relations, showing that high-fidelity qubit coupling is possible
in the presence of realistic imperfections. Possible experimental
implementations in systems ranging from ultracold Rydberg atoms to arrays of
Nitrogen-Vacancy defect centers in diamond are discussed.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure
Numerical models of jet disruption in cluster cooling flows
We present a coherent picture for the formation of the observed diverse radio morphological structures in dominant cluster galaxies based on the jet Mach number. Realistic, supersonic, steady-state cooling flow atmospheres are evolved numerically and then used as the ambient medium through which jets of various properties are propagated. Low Mach number jets effectively stagnate due to the ram pressure of the cooling flow atmosphere while medium Mach number jets become unstable and disrupt in the cooling flow to form amorphous structures. High Mach number jets manage to avoid disruption and are able to propagate through the cooling flow
