Independent resolutions for totally disconnected dynamical systems I: Algebraic case
This is the first out of two papers on independent resolutions for totally
disconnected dynamical systems. In the present paper, we discuss independent
resolutions from an algebraic point of view. We also present applications to
group homology and cohomology. This first paper sets the stage for our second
paper, where we explain how to use independent resolutions in K-theory
computations for crossed products attached to totally disconnected dynamical
systems.Comment: 26 pages; minor changes improving the expositio
Dax Chizum
Dax David Chisum was born in 1968 in Redondo Beach, California. Dax identifies as a gay, Caucasian, male and sees himself as belonging to the working class. He moved to Idaho at the age of one and was raised in the Wood River Valley, which helped to expose him to a great deal of diversity due to the high volume of tourism in the area. He didn’t have strong religious roots growing up, however when he came out at around the age of 20, his mother had a nervous breakdown and claimed that Dax had “broken her heart.” Now things have changed and Dax is an advocate for human rights at the Idaho Human Rights Education Center. During this interview, Dax touches on his life after coming out, how coming out affected his work for the Idaho Human Rights Education Center, he discusses where he feels most comfortable and uncomfortable as a gay man in Boise, what he feels are the biggest issues facing the Boise LGBTQ community as well as what are some of the biggest obstacles facing the Humans Rights Center in Boise.https://scholarworks.boisestate.edu/idlgbtq_oral_histories/1004/thumbnail.jp
The Scope of the Federal Arbitration Act's Preemption Power: An Examination of the Import of Saturn Distribution Corp. v. Williams
Embodying the JACK Agent Architecture
Agent-based models of human operators rarely include explicit representations of the timing and accuracy of perception and action, although their accuracy is sometimes implicitly modelled by including random noise for observations and actions. In many situations though, the timing and accuracy of the person's perception and action significantly influence their overall performance on a task. Recently many cognitive architectures have been extended to include perceptual/motor capabilities, making them embodied, and they have since been successfully used to test and compare interface designs. This paper describes the implementation of a similar perceptual/motor system that uses and extends the JACK agent language. The resulting embodied architecture has been used to compare GUIs representing telephones, but has been designed to interact with any mouse-driven Java interface. The results clearly indicate the impact of poor design on performance, with the agent taking longer to perform the task on the more poorly designed telephone. Initial comparisons with human data show a close match, and more detailed comparisons are underway
Overvåking av Ytre Oslofjord - Bentosundersøkelser 2009. Fagrapport
Historical changes in the phenology of British Odonata are related to climate
Responses of biota to climate change take a number of forms including distributional shifts, behavioural changes and life history changes. This study examined an extensive set of biological records to investigate changes in the timing of life history transitions (specifically emergence) in British Odonata between 1960 and 2004. The results show that there has been a significant, consistent advance in phenology in the taxon as a whole over the period of warming that is mediated by life history traits. British odonates significantly advanced the leading edge (first quartile date) of the flight period by a mean of 1.51 ±0.060 (SEM, n=17) days per decade or 3.08±1.16 (SEM, n=17) days per degree rise in temperature when phylogeny is controlled for. This study represents the first review of changes in odonate phenology in relation to climate change. The results suggest that the damped temperature oscillations experienced by aquatic organisms compared with terrestrial organisms are sufficient to evoke phenological responses similar to those of purely terrestrial taxa
Fermi Surface reconstruction in the CDW state of CeTe3 observed by photoemission
CeTe3 is a layered compound where an incommensurate Charge Density Wave (CDW)
opens a large gap (400 meV) in optimally nested regions of the Fermi Surface
(FS), whereas other sections with poorer nesting remain ungapped. Through
Angle-Resolved Photoemission, we identify bands backfolded according to the CDW
periodicity. They define FS pockets formed by the intersection of the original
FS and its CDW replica. Such pockets illustrate very directly the role of
nesting in the CDW formation but they could not be detected so far in a CDW
system. We address the reasons for the weak intensity of the folded bands, by
comparing different foldings coexisting in CeTe3
