Visions of Utopia: Sweden, the BBC and the Welfare State

Drawing on manuscripts and transcripts of BBC programme output, and material from the Radio Times, and the BBC’s The Listener magazine, this article analyses radio talks and programmes that focused on Sweden in the immediate years after the Second World War when the Swedish model was widely popularised abroad. The article argues that BBC output entangled domestic politics and transnational ideas around post-war reconstruction and welfare. Sweden was used as a lens through which a modern welfare state could be visualised and justified. This was however Utopia in two senses since the image of Sweden presented was in itself a highly idealised representation

The consequences of centralization of maternal care in Sweden : A Cost-benefit analysis of costs and health consequences

Sedan 1970-talet har över hälften av alla förlossningskliniker i Sverige lagts ned och verksamheter centraliserats till större enheter. Denna utveckling har blivit omdebatterad och vi vill i vår uppsats undersöka vilka samhälls- och hälsoekonomiska konsekvenser den fått. Vi gör detta i två analyser. En där vi analyserar ett enskilt fall, nedläggningen av Sollefteå förlossningsklinik 2017 och en där vi analyserar situationen i hela Sverige mellan åren 2000 och 2021. Slutsatsen vi kommer fram till är att nedläggningen av Sollefteås förlossningsklinik är samhällsekonomiskt olönsam och att de samhällsekonomiska konsekvenserna av centralisering i hela Sverige 2000-2021 är tvetydiga. Since the 1970s, more than half of all maternity wards in Sweden have been closed and their operations centralized into larger units. This development has been widely debated, and in our study we aim to investigate the social and health-economic consequences of this centralisation. We do this in two ways. First, we analyze a single case, the closing of Sollefteå maternity ward in 2017; second, we analyze the situation in all of Sweden between the years 2000 and 2021. Our conclusion is that the closure of Sollefteå's maternity ward is economically unprofitable and that the economic consequences of centralization in the entirety of Sweden between 2000-2021 were ambiguous.
