Consistent Estimation of Gibbs Energy Using Component Contributions

    Get PDF
Standard Gibbs energies of reactions are increasingly being used in metabolic modeling for applying thermodynamic constraints on reaction rates, metabolite concentrations and kinetic parameters. The increasing scope and diversity of metabolic models has led scientists to look for genome-scale solutions that can estimate the standard Gibbs energy of all the reactions in metabolism. Group contribution methods greatly increase coverage, albeit at the price of decreased precision. We present here a way to combine the estimations of group contribution with the more accurate reactant contributions by decomposing each reaction into two parts and applying one of the methods on each of them. This method gives priority to the reactant contributions over group contributions while guaranteeing that all estimations will be consistent, i.e. will not violate the first law of thermodynamics. We show that there is a significant increase in the accuracy of our estimations compared to standard group contribution. Specifically, our cross-validation results show an 80% reduction in the median absolute residual for reactions that can be derived by reactant contributions only. We provide the full framework and source code for deriving estimates of standard reaction Gibbs energy, as well as confidence intervals, and believe this will facilitate the wide use of thermodynamic data for a better understanding of metabolism

Firefly is a type of insect that can emit a yellow or green light from its body. The existence of fireflies in nature has an important role for the sustainability of the balance of biological and technological advances in the health field. Firefly populations are reducing in number. Some time ago fireflies are easy to find, especially in the villages, but now they are very rarely to be seen. The possibility of its presence has been threatened due to the opening of land and forests. As a result of this situation, many of us only know and have little information of fireflies. Manjung village, Ngawen District of Klaten district, is one of the places where there are habitats and populations of wild fireflies that live in rice fields. From the point of view where the problems occurred, to protect the population of fireflies in Klaten district, concept of Firefly Garden area could be the solution for the survival of fireflies where in the region, there is a cultivation of fireflies, a place to study and travel to see the beauty of light emitted by fireflies. To add the educational value in Firefly Garden area, there is a museum with various types of insects that can be learned by any visitor of Firefly Garden area. From the discussion above, it can be concluded that the firefly is one of the insects of which existence is endangered, and a place is needed to nurture and preserve the viability of fireflies, taking advantage of technologies developments in the form of facilities and support so that fireflies are cultured and can be studied and utilized for the benefit of human life

Climate change and global warming have worsenedsince over the past year due to the greenhouse gas emission. Evidences show one of the main factors that contributes to global warmingis the impact of carbon footprint. Human activities are the causes of a great deal of carbon footprint. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to assess the carbon footprint emission at UniversitiTeknologi MARA (UiTM) Seri Iskandar, Perak. The study focuses on two categories specifically on electrical power and transportation usage that contribute to carbon footprint emission. A survey on transportation was conducted by distributing questionnaire to the staffand students within the university. Meanwhile for electrical power consumption, the study used monthly electricity bills to measure the amount of energy consumed.Data was collected and calculated with the formula developed by Green House Gas protocol, resulted in the total carbon footprint produced by UiTM Seri Iskandar Perak for the year 2014. The result of the study is hoped to provide guidelines and strategies for the university to reduce the carbon footprint emission at UiTM Seri Iskandar, Perak

This research was conducted at PT. Cahaya Bumi Intanpari with Bottled Drinking Water (AMDK) products. The type of AMDK product studied is Demineralized Water which is safe drinking water which is processed through several stages without the addition of oxygen (O2) or carbon dioxide (CO2). Product packaging variants produced by PT. Cahaya Bumi Intanpari consists of 3 types, namely 19L gallon packaging, 140 mL cup, 330 bottles and 600 mL. This study aims to identify Critical Control Points (TKK) in the process of making bottled water by using the Hazard Analysis & Critical Control Point (HACCP) method and its proposed application. This method is very effective as a preventive measure to ensure food security because it can identify hazard. The results obtained in the analysis using the HACCP method obtained 8 TKK in the process of making bottled water PT. Intanpari Earth Light. These results are found in the second principle of the concept of applying HACCP by referring to the decision tree diagram. The proposal of this research is in the form of a HACCP application design consisting of 12 steps, in which 7 principles are included in it

International tourists that will visit Asia and Pasific are projected to had a significant increase until 2030. Indonesia which has a variety of potential tourism must be able to catch the numerous tourist market opportunities. Tourist who come for MICE have more advantages than the other tourists since they are generally opinion leaders who come from businessmen, profesional and governments circles. The tourists also come in large quantities, with high expenses while spend their time in the host destination of MICE activities. This caused competition among destinations in bringing the International MICE events to a very high level. In the memorandum of understanding, the BPIDP Deputy with the Mayor of Yogyakarta, Surakarta and Semarang, which aims to support the acceleration of increasing the number of business destinations (MICE) to Indonesia and help increase the MICE Joglosemar destinations (Yogyakarta, Surakarta, Semarang) to become MICE destinations on International level. Karanganyar regency has a lot of potential influences up to the Solo City and that potential makes this regency called as Bumi Intanpari (Industry, Agriculture and Tourism). Karanganyar regency is one of the regencies in the Surakarta residency that has lowlands and highlands, where the highlands can support the existence of buildings with energy-efficient, environmental friendly or sustainable building concepts. The concept of ‘back to nature’ is one of the concept that aims to change the uncontrolled human lifestyle in various aspects. Architectural radicalsm began to grew up with the development of science and then nature was used to be responsive to the present conditions of nature and the earth. Without realizing it, if the concept of sustainable building is not applied in every constructions, one day it will suffer with the crisis of natural resources and severe environmental damage. The emphasis is more on passive strategies with the way nature into the building orientation, building shape, lighting system and natural airing. Besides passive strategies, there will be the use of sustainable materials in several place that need it. Keywords: Joglosemar, MICE, passive strategies, environmental friendl
