    Analysis of the Effect of Soil Erosion in Abandoned Agricultural Areas: The Case of NE Area of Basilicata Region (Southern Italy)

    Land abandonment is among the most complex la nd use change processes driven by a multiplicity of anthropogenic and natural factors, such as agricultural over-exploitation, implementation of agricultural policies, socio-economic and climatic aspects. Therefore, it is necessary to deepen the effects of land abandonment based on methodologies that are as multidisciplinary as possible. Environmental and social problems related to abandonment include soil erosion and environmental degradation. Approaches combining GIS (Geographic Information System), remote sensing, and image analysis techniques allow for assessments and predictions based on integrating theoretical models with advanced geospatial and geostatistical models. One of the most widely used models for soil erosion estimation is the Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation (RUSLE). The present work developed a model using remote sensing and GIS tools to investigate some factors of the RUSLE equation to evaluate the adverse effects of soil erosion in areas covered by arable crops and subsequently abandoned. To identify potentially degraded areas, two factors of the RUSLE were related: the C Factor describing the vegetation cover of the soil and the A Factor representing the amount of potential soil erosion. Through statistical correlation analysis with the RUSLE factors, based on the deviations from the average erosion values and mapping of the areas of vegetation degradation relating to arable land, the areas identified and mapped are susceptible to soil degradation

    Synergistic disruptions in seuss cyp85A2 double mutants reveal a role for brassinolide synthesis during gynoecium and ovule development

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The Arabidopsis <it>SEUSS </it>(<it>SEU</it>) gene encodes a transcriptional adaptor protein that is required for a diverse set of developmental events, including floral organ identity specification, as well as gynoecium, ovule and embryo development. In order to better understand the molecular mechanisms of <it>SEUSS </it>action we undertook a genetic modifier screen to identify <it>seuss-modifier </it>(<it>sum</it>) mutations.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Screening of M2 lines representing approximately 5,000 M1 individuals identified mutations that enhance the <it>seuss </it>mutant phenotypic disruptions in ovules and gynoecia; here we describe the phenotype of the <it>sum63 </it>mutant and enhanced disruptions of ovule and gynoecial development in the <it>seu sum63 </it>double mutant. Mapping and genetic complementation tests indicate that <it>sum63 </it>is allelic to <it>CYP85A2 </it>(AT3G30180) a cytochrome p450 enzyme that catalyzes the final steps in the synthesis of the phytohormone brassinolide.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Our identification of mutations in <it>CYP85A2 </it>as enhancers of the <it>seuss </it>mutant phenotype suggests a previously unrecognized role for brassinolide synthesis in gynoecial and ovule outer integument development. The work also suggests that <it>seuss </it>mutants may be more sensitive to the loss or reduction of brassinolide synthesis than are wild type plants.</p

    Prostate cancer disparity, chemoprevention, and treatment by specific medicinal plants

    © 2019 by the authors. Licensee MDPI, Basel, Switzerland. Prostate cancer (PC) is one of the most common cancers in men. The global burden of this disease is rising. Its incidence and mortality rates are higher in African American (AA) men compared to white men and other ethnic groups. The treatment decisions for PC are based exclusively on histological architecture, prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels, and local disease state. Despite advances in screening for and early detection of PC, a large percentage of men continue to be diagnosed with metastatic disease including about 20% of men affected with a high mortality rate within the African American population. As such, this population group may benefit from edible natural products that are safe with a low cost. Hence, the central goal of this article is to highlight PC disparity associated with nutritional factors and highlight chemo-preventive agents from medicinal plants that are more likely to reduce PC. To reach this central goal, we searched the PubMed Central database and the Google Scholar website for relevant papers. Our search results revealed that there are significant improvements in PC statistics among white men and other ethnic groups. However, its mortality rate remains significantly high among AA men. In addition, there are limited studies that have addressed the benefits of medicinal plants as chemo-preventive agents for PC treatment, especially among AA men. This review paper addresses this knowledge gap by discussing PC disparity associated with nutritional factors and highlighting the biomedical significance of three medicinal plants (curcumin, garlic, and Vernonia amygdalina) that show a great potential to prevent/treat PC, as well as to reduce its incidence/prevalence and mortality, improve survival rate, and reduce PC-related health disparity

    New insights into the exploitation of vitis vinifera l. Cv. aglianico leaf extracts for nutraceutical purposes

    The leaves of Vitis vinifera L. have been used for a long time in traditional medicine for the treatment of many ailments. Grape polyphenols, indeed, have been demonstrated to be able to defend against oxidative stress, responsible for various disorders such as cancer, diabetes and neurodegenerative diseases. The effects of different extraction techniques, Soxhlet (SOX), Accelerated Solvent (ASE 40, ASE 50) and Ultrasound Assisted Extraction (UAE) were studied in this work to evaluate their impact on the chemical profile and bioactive potential of Vitis vinifera L. (cv. Aglianico) leaf extracts. The phytochemical profile was investigated by HPLC-DAD and 9 phenolic compounds were identified and quantified in the extract. Moreover, the antioxidant, anticholinesterase and antityrosinase activities were evaluated. In detail, the total polyphenol content and antioxidant activity (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl, Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacities and β-Carotene Bleaching assays) were evaluated and compared to assess the Relative Antioxidant Capacity Index (RACI). To test the inhibitory activity of extracts towards cholinesterases, acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and butyrylcholinesterase (BChE) inhibition assays were performed. SOX and ASE 50 have shown the highest value of RACI, 0.76 and 0.65, respectively. Regarding enzymatic inhibitory activity, ASE 50 (IC50 = 107.16 ± 8.12 µg/mL) and SOX (IC50 = 171.34 ± 12.12 µg/mL) extracts exhibited the highest AChE and BChE inhibitory activity, respectively, while UAE (IC50 = 293.2 ± 25.6 µg/mL, followed by SOX (IC50 = 302.5 ± 38.3 µg/mL) showed the highest tyrosinase inhibition value. Our results demonstrated for the first time that Aglianico leaves are important sources of phenols that could be used to prevent oxidative stress and be potentially helpful in diseases treatable with tyrosinase and cholinesterase inhibitors, like myasthenia gravis or Alzheimer’s

    Las poblaciones de Tagosodes orizicolus Muir, insecto plaga clave del cultivo de arroz en el valle de Tumbes, son reguladas por enemigos naturales predadores y parasitoides.  El objetivo del estudio fue identificar especies de parasitoides. Durante noviembre 2018 a junio 2019, se recolectaron semanalmente hojas de arroz conteniendo huevos; adultos y ninfas recolectadas con red entomológica y llevadas al Museo de Entomología de la Universidad Nacional de Tumbes, en las hojas se realizaron disecciones, se retiró la parte conteniendo los huevos, se depositaron en tubos de ensayo para esperar la emergencia de cigarritas o parasitoides para su identificación y preservación. Los adultos y ninfas fueron revisados para detectar presencia de ectoparasitoides.  Se utilizaron las claves para especies de himenópteros neotropicales y subtropicales de Huber y Pinto. Se recuperaron dos especies, una perteneciente al género Anagrus (Mymaridae) y la otra al género Paracentrobia (Trichogrammatidae). El mayor porcentaje de parasitismo fue de 16,7% al 47,7% para Anagrus y 2,1% al 39,3% para Paracentrobia. No se recuperaron parasitoides de los otros estados de desarrollo.  Se concluye que existen especies de parasitoides de huevos en el valle de Tumbes y para su multiplicación y protección natural hay que brindarles corredores biológicos

    Trastuzumab with either docetaxel or vinorelbine as first-line treatment for patients with HER2-positive advanced breast cancer : a retrospective comparison

    Background Combinations of trastuzumab with either docetaxel or vinorelbine are considered valuable treatment options for HER2-positive metastatic breast cancer patients. We performed a retrospective comparison of the clinical outcomes associated with either one of these combinations. Methods From a multi-institutional database we retrieved 179 patients treated with either docetaxel or vinorelbine plus trastuzumab as first-line therapy for HER2-positive advanced breast cancer. Results Docetaxel-trastuzumab was superior to vinorelbine-trastuzumab in terms of response rate (RR: 77 vs 57%, p = 0.01) and median overall survival (OS: 35 vs 23 months, p = 0.04), but not in median time to progression (TTP: 12 vs 10 months, p = 0.53). At multivariate analysis, type of treatment was not associated with TTP but was an independent predictor of OS, with a significant reduction in the risk of death in favor of docetaxel-trastuzumab (HR 0.474, 95% IC 0,303-0.742, p < 0.01). Conclusion Docetaxel or vinorelbine, when combined with trastuzumab, provide excellent rates of tumor control in patients with previously untreated HER2-positive advanced breast cancer. Docetaxel may offer some advantage in terms of response rate and resulted in a significantly prolonged overall survival, which, because of the retrospective design of our study, deserves further investigation in prospective trials

    All-oral combination of oral vinorelbine and capecitabine as first-line chemotherapy in HER2-negative metastatic breast cancer: an International Phase II Trial

    BACKGROUND: This multicentre, international phase II trial evaluated the efficacy and safety profile of a first-line combination of oral vinorelbine plus capecitabine for women with metastatic breast cancer (MBC). METHODS: Patients with measurable, HER2-negative disease received, as a first line in metastatic setting, 3-weekly cycles of oral vinorelbine 80 mg m(-2) (after a first cycle at 60) on day 1 and day 8, plus capecitabine 1000 mg m(-2) (750 if >or=65 years of age) twice daily, on days 1-14. Treatment was continued until progression or unacceptable toxicity. RESULTS: A total of 55 patients were enrolled and 54 were treated (median age: 58.5 years). Most (78%) had visceral involvement and 63% had received earlier (neo)adjuvant chemotherapy. The objective response rate (RECIST) in 49 evaluable patients was 51% (95% confidence interval (CI), 36-66), including complete response in 4%. The clinical benefit rate (response or stable disease for >or=6 months) was 63% (95% CI, 48-77). The median duration of response was 7.2 months (95% CI, 6.4-10.2). After a median follow-up of 41 months, median progression-free survival was 8.4 months (95% CI, 5.8-9.7) and median overall survival was 29.2 months (95% CI, 18.2-40.1). Treatment-related adverse events were manageable, the main grade 3-4 toxicity was neutropaenia (49%); two patients experienced febrile neutropaenia and three patients had a neutropaenic infection (including one septic death). A particularly low rate of alopaecia was observed. CONCLUSION: These results show that the all-oral combination of oral vinorelbine and capecitabine is an effective and well-tolerated first-line regimen for MB

    International ocean discovery program expedition 372 preliminary report: Creeping gas hydrate slides and Hikurangi LWD

    International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) Expedition 372 combined two research topics, slow slip events (SSEs) on subduction faults (IODP Proposal 781A-Full) and actively deforming gas hydrate-bearing landslides (IODP Proposal 841-APL). Our study area on the Hikurangi margin, east of the coast of New Zealand, provided unique locations for addressing both research topics.SSEs at subduction zones are an enigmatic form of creeping fault behavior. They typically occur on subduction zones at depths beyond the capabilities of ocean floor drilling. However, at the northern Hikurangi subduction margin they are among the best-documented and shallowest on Earth. Here, SSEs may extend close to the trench, where clastic and pelagic sediments about 1.0-1.5 km thick overlie the subducting, seamount-studded Hikurangi Plateau. Geodetic data show that these SSEs recur about every 2 years and are associated with measurable seafloor displacement. The northern Hikurangi subduction margin thus provides an excellent setting to use IODP capabilities to discern the mechanisms behind slow slip fault behaviour
