This study investigated the effect of integrating various models proposed to improve a simple gas turbine power plant. A computer program was developed in Matlab software was used to simulate the performance parameters. The energy and exergy analysis of the plant was carried out. The energy and exergy analysis result revealed that both energy and exergy efficiency of plant is low as a result three improvement options were considered. They include Model 1: reducing inlet air cooling (IAC) of the compressor by using the wasted energy in the natural gas pressure drop station. Model 2: recovering wasted energy in the exhaust through heat recovery steam generator (HRSG) and injecting steam into the combustion chamber and lastly Model 3: by combining the two methods. The result showed that among the three methods of improving the plant investigated Model 3 was found to boost power output of the plant from 28.3 MW to 78.4 MW while the thermal and exergetic efficiency improved by 25.5 and 23.6% respectively. Furthermore, from economic and environmental point of view, the lowest levelized cost of electricity as well as the specific emissions was observed in Model 3. Consequently, Model 3 is selected as the best option in improving the simple gas turbine.  http://dx.doi.org/10.4314/njt.v36i3.2

Behavioral impairment in SHATI/NAT8L knockout mice via dysfunction of myelination development

We have identified SHATI/NAT8L in the brain of mice treated with methamphetamine. Recently, it has been reported that SHATI is N-acetyltransferase 8-like protein (NAT8L) that produces N-acetylaspatate (NAA) from aspartate and acetyl-CoA. We have generated SHATI/NAT8L knockout (Shati−/−) mouse which demonstrates behavioral deficits that are not rescued by single NAA supplementation, although the reason for which is still not clarified. It is possible that the developmental impairment results from deletion of SHATI/NAT8L in the mouse brain, because NAA is involved in myelination through lipid synthesis in oligodendrocytes. However, it remains unclear whether SHATI/NAT8L is involved in brain development. In this study, we found that the expression of Shati/Nat8l mRNA was increased with brain development in mice, while there was a reduction in the myelin basic protein (MBP) level in the prefrontal cortex of juvenile, but not adult, Shati−/− mice. Next, we found that deletion of SHATI/NAT8L induces several behavioral deficits in mice, and that glyceryltriacetate (GTA) treatment ameliorates the behavioral impairments and normalizes the reduced protein level of MBP in juvenile Shati−/− mice. These findings suggest that SHATI/NAT8L is involved in myelination in the juvenile mouse brain via supplementation of acetate derived from NAA. Thus, reduction of SHATI/NAT8L induces developmental neuronal dysfunction

Angioscopic Evaluation of Stabilizing Effects of Bezafibrate on Coronary Plaques in Patients With Coronary Artery Disease

Background Since long-term administrations of anti-hyperlipidemic agents result in reduction in % stenosis or increase in minimum lumen diameter (MLD) of stenotic coronary segments, it is generally believed that anti-hyperlipidemic agents stabilize vulnerable coronary plaques. However, recent pathologic and angioscopic studies revealed that vulnerability of coronary plaques is not related to severity of stenosis and the rims rather than top of the plaques disrupt, and therefore, angiography is not adequate for evaluation of vulnerability

This study investigates the relationship among young children\u27s breakfast grouping from view point of combination of the menu and lifestyle patterns (schedule, meal partner, television, appetite). A questionnaire survey was conducted with a total of 118 parents of the children aged 3-6 attending 2 nursery schools in Nagano city. The results show that many children have with their mother. Most of them take 30 minutes for starting breakfast after getting up. 56% children took well balanced breakfast, with staple food, main dish, side dish (1stG). 44% take not same as the first group (2ndG). 2ndG tend to have a short time for going nursery after starting breakfast. They have habit to watch TV during breakfast. There was little difference between both groups about appetite on breakfast

BACKGROUND: There are limited data regarding the hypoxia pathway in familial breast cancers. We therefore performed a study of hypoxic factors in BRCA1, BRCA2 and BRCAX breast cancers. METHODS: Immunoperoxidase staining for HIF-1alpha, PHD1, PHD2, PHD3, VEGF and FIH was carried out in 125 (38 BRCA1, 33 BRCA2 and 54 BRCAX) breast carcinomas. These were correlated with clinicopathological parameters and the intrinsic breast cancer phenotypes. RESULTS: BRCA1 tumours correlated with positivity for HIF-1alpha (P=0.008) and negativity for PHD3 (P=0.037). HIF-1alpha positivity (P=0.001), PHD3 negativity (P=0.037) and nuclear FIH negativity (P=0.011) was associated with basal phenotype. HIF-1alpha expression correlated with high tumour grade (P=0.009), negative oestrogen receptor (ER) status (P=0.001) and the absence of lymph node metastasis (P=0.028). Nuclear FIH expression and PHD3 correlated with positive ER expression (P=0.024 and P=0.035, respectively). BRCA1 cancers with positive HIF-1alpha or cytoplasmic FIH had a significantly shorter relapse-free survival (P=0.007 and P=0.049, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: The aggressive nature of BRCA1 and basal-type tumours may be partly explained by an enhanced hypoxic drive and hypoxia driven ER degradation because of suppressed PHD and aberrantly located FIH expression. This may have important implications, as these tumours may respond to compounds directed against HIF-1alpha or its downstream targets
