    Comparative analysis and optimization of technical and weight parameters of turbo-electric propulsion systems

    According to Flightpath 2050, the aviation industry is aiming to substantially reduce emissions over the coming decades. One possible solution to meet these ambitious goals is by moving to hybrid-electric drivetrain architectures which require the electric components to be extremely lightweight and efficient at the same time. It has been claimed in several publications that cryogenic and in particular superconducting components can help to fulfill such requirements that potentially cannot be achieved with non-cryogenic components. The purpose of this work was to make a fair comparison between a cryogenic turbo-electric propulsion system (CEPS) and a non-cryogenic turbo-electric propulsion system (TEPS) on a quantitative level. The results on the CEPS were presented in detail in a previous publication. The focus of this publication is to present the study on the TEPS, which in conclusion allows a direct comparison. For both systems the same top-level aircraft requirements were used that were derived within the project TELOS based on an exemplary mission profile and the physical measures of a 220-passenger aircraft. Our study concludes that a CEPS could be 10% to 40% lighter than a TEPS. Furthermore, a CEPS could have a total efficiency gain of up to 18% compared to a similar TEPS

    Simulation of the Thermal Performance of HTS Coated Conductors for HVDC SFCL

    Within the EU-funded project FastGrid a resistive superconducting fault current limiter for DC-application is actually under development. To reduce substantially the amount of deployed superconducting tape an increase of voltage per length in the limitation case is needed. Moreover, the resistive transition (quench) should be fast and uniform. In the present work, the thermal behavior of three different architectures of coated conductors are investigated by means of transient simulations. The first architecture is composed by an additional Hastelloy shunt layer, which is supposed to avoid overheating of the conductor during fault limitation. The other architectures include layers of silver and copper as stabilizers. Our parameter study including the geometries of the different layers and the inhomogeneity of the critical current density of the superconducting tape shall lead to an optimized tape layout. First comparisons with experiment indicate, that, with the first architecture, electric field strength up to 100 V/m should be within reach

    Evaluation of the effectiveness of three therapeutic protocols used in the treatment of visceral canine leishmaniosis

    Leishmaniasis is a tropical and subtropical disease caused by an intracellular protozoan transmitted by a bite from a vector, mainly from the genera Phlebotomus and Lutzomyia, and affects humans and other mammals, especially dogs. The main objective in controlling canine visceral leishmaniasis is to reduce the number of human cases by reducing its prevalence in dogs. In Brazil, glucantime antimoniate and Amphotericin B, utilized for treating the disease in humans, are prohibited so that only miltefosine, which is not employed for treatment of humans, is permitted for use in dogs. This work aimed to evaluate the efficacy of three different therapeutic protocols employed in the treatment of dogs naturally infected with visceral leishmaniasis. Fifty-six (56) dogs, of both sexes, were treated and evaluated utilizing three treatment protocols. The following protocols were utilized: association of several drugs; miltefosine associated with allopurinol; and immunotherapy with anti- Leishmania vaccine associated with Allopurinol. Immunotherapy was the most efficient protocol, followed by an association of drugs and miltefosine. The use of these protocols diminishes the constant relapses of the disease. Associations of therapeutic protocols produced clinical improvement of patients even with presentation of subsequent negative serology. However, the study did not include aspects related to hemoparasitoses, thus a further study is required

    Cutmarked bone of drought-tolerant extinct megafauna deposited with traces of fire, human foraging, and introduced animals in SW Madagascar

    People could have hunted Madagascar’s megafauna to extinction, particularly when introduced taxa and drought exacerbated the effects of predation. However, such explanations are difficult to test due to the scarcity of individual sites with unambiguous traces of humans, introduced taxa, and endemic megaherbivores. We excavated three coastal ponds in arid SW Madagascar and present a unique combination of traces of human activity (modified pygmy hippo bone, processed estuarine shell and fish bone, and charcoal), along with bones of extinct megafauna (giant tortoises, pygmy hippos, and elephant birds), extirpated fauna (e.g., crocodiles), and introduced vertebrates (e.g., zebu cattle). The disappearance of megafauna from the study sites at ~ 1000 years ago followed a relatively arid interval and closely coincides with increasingly frequent traces of human foraging, fire, and pastoralism. Our analyses fail to document drought-associated extirpation or multiple millennia of megafauna hunting and suggest that a late combination of hunting, forest clearance, and pastoralism drove extirpations.Results - Subfossils and chronology. - Charcoal.
