Marine Protected Areas in Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction: Defining Success for Conservation and Management

    Get PDF
With growing attention to and use of marine protected areas [MPAs], there are an increasing number of policy goals ascribed to these area-based management tools [ABMT]. One expectation is that an MPA can increase system “resilience”, yet oftentimes resilience – including whether we are considering social, economic or ecological resilience – stays unspecified. In recent years, there has also been a specific focus on MPAs as tools to promote climate change resilient ocean systems. Through a meta-analysis of the scientific literature and an analysis of over one thousand three hundred voluntary commitments made at the United Nation Ocean Conference, this work presents a typology of how the concept of resilience is beyond deployed in MPA science and policy-making. Further analysis, supplemented by semi- structure interviews and surveys highlights the diversity of ways in which practitioners define MPA success. These analyses reveal that – in contemporary international ocean governance – different stakeholders are connecting MPAs to different forms of resilience. This work also highlights a disconnect between expressed goals of MPAs, such as cultural effectiveness, and what is deemed important in practice (ecological factors)

Plant sulfate transporters in the low phytic acid network : some educated guesses

    Get PDF
A few new papers report that mutations in some genes belonging to the group 3 of plant sulfate transporter family result in low phytic acid phenotypes, drawing novel strategies and approaches for engineering the low-phytate trait in cereal grains. Here, we shortly review the current knowledge on phosphorus/sulfur interplay and sulfate transport regulation in plants, to critically discuss some hypotheses that could help in unveiling the physiological links between sulfate transport and phosphorus accumulation in seeds

Synthesis and Coordination Chemistry of Main Group Pyridyl Ligands

The bis(2-pyridyl) ligands [Me2Al(6-Me-2-py)2Li·2THF] (40) and [Me2Al(5-Me-2-py)2Li·2THF] (44) were synthesized by reacting 2-bromo-6-methylpyridine and 2-bromo-5-methylpyridine, respectively, with nBuLi at ─78 °C (1:1 equiv), followed by reaction with Me2AlCl (2:1 equiv). Reaction with 2-bromo-3-methylpyridine was attempted (45), but the crystalline material [BrLi(6-Me-py)3] was obtained. Further experiments were tried, with different R-bridgehead groups (R = Et (41), Ph (42), tBu (43)) trying to be introduced. Although some of the reactions were believed to be successful, the isolation of the products was extremely difficult, given the oily nature of most of the obtained compounds, presumably by the presence of hydrolysed material. Substitution of the Li+ cation in 40 by Na+ (46) and K+ (47) by the reaction of 40 with NaOtBu or KOtBu (1:1 equiv), respectively, was also attempted, although neither of the reactions showed successful results. Transmetallation reactions between 40 and various metals (Fe, Ca, Mn, Nb, Eu, Yb or Sm) did not yield any crystal structures. However, the reaction between the in situ ligand 41 and FeCl2 appeared to be successful. Unfortunately, no characterization analysis could be performed on it.The synthesis of the already reported [Bi(4-py)3] ligand (48) by reaction of 4-bromopyridine with nBuLi (1:1 equiv), followed by reaction with BiCl3 (3:1 equiv) is described. Further reactions with Ni(BF4)2, NiBr2, Co(BF4)2 and CoBr2 are also mentioned, although the layering of the 48 solution and the different metal solutions did not yield any crystalline material that could be observed. The NMR-scale reaction of 48 with [Bi(6-Me-2-py)3] (1:2 equiv) in d6-benzene and d8-THF was also attempted, although no change in the 1H NMR spectra could be observed, indicating that both reactions were unsuccessful. <br /

Passion Pit: On the Right Track

    Get PDF
Fresh off the release of the critically-acclaimed second LP, indie-pop royalty Passion Pit brings the dance-ready sound of Gossamer to the stage. Bro’d out druggies snorted unidentifiable powders from tin cans and were guided to another world by Michael Angelakos’ soaring voice and band of bouncing synths. The sweat weighed down Angelakos’ Greek mop of curls and turned his shirt a deeper shade of purple as he amped the sea of hands a few thousand deep. Then relatively under the radar, Passion Pit made its Lollapalooza debut in an easily overlooked afternoon slot on a side stage with an unmastered EP and freshly released label full-length under its belt

Der Ileus - ein Findling in der modernen Medizin?

    Get PDF
