Between visual art and visual text. Intermediality and hypertext: A possible combination for twenty-first century philology

The birth of digital writing, characterized by a process of correction that implies the omission of the preparatory editorial phases of a literary text, has brought about an epochal change in the author-text relationship, now characterized, for the first time in literary history, by the disappearance of autograph documentation. This evident loss would seem to threaten the survival of twenty-first century philology, destined to operate despite the absence of the author’s handwritten documents. But the genetic reconstruction of the text, if taken as a speculative habitus and common research practice, can constitute a valid answer and a new possibility for future philological inquiry which combines literature, music and art in a new Hypermedia. The compositional history of the work and that of its dissemination can be exemplified by an exhibition of typologically diverse materials, such as images, sounds, videos, which allow us to contextualize the literary text through a multidisciplinary creative process and to reconnect it to the very important and popular field of intermediality studies. This article proposes a few samples of this new research approach regarding Giovanni Boccaccio and his literary masterpiece Decameron

From Hierapolis in Frygia – Asia Minor – we have more than one thousand funerary inscriptions. In the last years, after half a century of work by the Italian Archaeological Mission (MAIER), the number of inscriptions from the town and the territory increased. The largest number of inscriptions in Hierapolis are the funerary ones. Many citizens could build monuments for themselves and their heirs. The inscriptions give us few information about biographical aspects of the deceased, as the principal function of these texts is juridical. The epitaphs indicate the owner of the tomb, who has the right to use it, the prohibition for anyone else to damage the monument, and the penalty for the infractions. Some late funerary epitaphs are engraved on more ancient monuments

Sedimentary rocks of the 3.2-3.2 Ga old Fig Tree Group in the southwest part of the Barberton Greenstone Belt in South Africa can be divided into three informal formations. The lowest unit, Formation A, is composed mostly of silicified pyroclastic debris and carbonaceous cherts. Formation B has four lithofacies--siltstone; sandstone; jaspilite; and bedded barite. Two coarse-grained lithofacies make up Formation C. In the western portion of the study area there is chert-clast conglomerate and in the eastern part of the study area is volcanic-clast conglomerate, breccia, and sandstone. In the western portion of the study area Formations B and C form a coarsening-upward sequence of siltstone, sandstone, and conglomerate that is interpreted to represent a fan-delta and associated low-energy basin. Three facies define the fan-delta: (1) a subaerial, delta-plain facies consisting of alluvial conglomerate and sandstone in a coarsening-upward sequence; (2) a delta-front facies consisting of subaqueous, sediment-gravity-flow-deposited conglomerate and sandstone derived from an alluvial/fluvial system that prograded into a low-energy body of water, and; (3) a subaqueous-basin facies consisting of laminated siltstone and thin beds of sediment-gravity-flow-deposited sandstone, conglomerate, and breccia. The pyroclastic and volcaniclastic rocks found in the eastern portion of the study area formed in response to dacitic volcanism which occurred during Fig Tree time. Rocks of the Fig Tree Group have been subjected to diagenetic alteration and low-grade metamorphism which has resulted mainly in silicification, along with the production of phyllosilicate. This had produced rocks that are now composed mainly of chert and sericite. Provenance studies indicate that the source for the Fig Tree fan-delta included uplifted portions of the underlying greenstone belt sequence and penecontemporaneous Fig Tree volcanic rocks. The tectonic evolution of the Barberton Greenstone Belt from latest Onverwacht through Fig Tree times can be summarized in three stages: (1) a predominantly volcanic, anorogenic stage; (2) a stage of evolving tectonic instability, and; (3) a final orogenic stage in which there was thrust faulting and erosion of both intra- and extra-belt rocks

New eastern limit of the geographic distribution of Orsinigobius punctatissimus (Canestrini, 1864) (Teleostei: Gobiiformes: Gobiidae) in northeastern Italy, with biological notes on the species

    Get PDF
A record of the gobiid Orsinigobius punctatissimus (Canestrini, 1864) from the springs of the Gorizia Karst (Italy, Friuli-Venezia Giulia) is reported, extending the eastern limit of the geographic distribution of the species. This goby lives in threatened spring habitats, and has recently become rarer. However, although O. punctatissimus is listed in the Italian Red List of threatened species as “Critically Endangered” (CR), the International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List of threatened species classifies it as “Near Threatened” (NT). Despite its risk of extinction, the species is not included in the annexes of the Habitat Directive (EU Directive 92/43/EEC) or other international wildlife protection conventions. Information is given on the taxonomy, distribution, biology and conservation of the species

Thermal, mechanical and rheological behaviors of nanocomposites based on UHMWPE/paraffin oil/carbon nanofiller obtained by using different dispersion techniques.

Ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) is a very attractive polymer employed as a high performance material. For its high viscosity, dispersion of fillers is considered a critical point in UHMWPE nanocomposites preparation process. Currently, paraffin oil (PO) is used extensively to overcome this issue in an assisted melt-mixing process. In this work, we have prepared nanocomposites based on UHMWPE, carbon nanofiller (CNF) and PO mixed by different mixing methods: magnetic stirring, ball milling (BM), ultrasonic and Mini-Lab extruder (EX). The aim of this work was to check the effect of the dispersion method on the mechanical and thermal features of UHMWPE/CNF nano composites in order to obtain a material with improved mechanical and physical properties. The samples were characterized by calorimetric, density, mechanical tensile and rheological analyses. Experimental results highlighted that the nanocomposites produced by EX and BM exhibits the best dispersion, good filler matrix interaction and had significantly improved mechanical properties compared to pure UHMWPE. For instance, for the BM method, the yield strength improved to 18.6 MPa (+96%), the yield strain improved by 60%, while stress at break improved by 13%. In summary, the EX improved the stiffness while the BM produced better ductility, melting temperature and the crystalline degree of the nanocomposites

Perfectionism in patients with eating disorders: The role of metacognitive beliefs and repetitive negative thinking

    Get PDF
AbstractIntroductionUsing the Self‐Regulatory Executive Function model as a basis, this study explored whether, in patients with eating disorders (EDs), metacognitions and repetitive negative thinking are associated with higher levels of perfectionisms.MethodsOne hundred twenty‐three outpatients with EDs were recruited. Perfectionism, metacognitive beliefs, worry, rumination, anger rumination, affective and eating symptoms were assessed. Correlation and hierarchal regression analyses were run.ResultsHigher endorsement of positive beliefs about worry was associated with higher levels of ‘personal standards perfectionism’. Higher endorsement of positive beliefs about worry, need to control thoughts, worry and rumination was associated with higher levels of ‘concern over mistakes perfectionism’.ConclusionsAmong patients with EDs, perfectionism appears to be associated with the endorsement of dysfunctional metacognitive beliefs, worry and rumination. Dysfunctional metacognitive beliefs and repetitive negative thinking could be suitable therapeutic targets to reduce the levels of perfectionism among patients with EDs
