    The XSST (X-Ray Spectrometer/Spectrograph Telescope) rocket payload launched by a Nike Boosted Black Brant was designed to provide high spectral resolution coronal soft X-ray line information on a spectrographic plate, as well as time resolved photo-electric records of pre-selected lines and spectral regions. This spectral data is obtained from a 1 x 10 arc second solar region defined by the paraboloidal telescope of the XSST. The transition region camera provided full disc images in selected spectral intervals originating in lower temperature zones than the emitting regions accessible to the XSST. A H-alpha camera system allowed referencing the measurements to the chromospheric temperatures and altitudes. Payload flight and recovery information is provided along with X-ray photoelectric and UV flight data, transition camera results and a summary of the anomalies encountered. Instrument mechanical stability and spectrometer pointing direction are also examined

    Feasibility study of the solar scientific instruments for Spacelab/Orbiter

    The feasibility and economics of mounting and operating a set of solar scientific instruments in the backup Skylab Apollo Telescope Mount (ATM) hardware was evaluated. The instruments used as the study test payload and integrated into the ATM were: the Solar EUV Telescope/Spectrometer; the Solar Active Region Observing Telescope; and the Lyman Alpha White Light Coronagraph. The backup ATM hardware consists of a central cruciform structure, called the "SPAR', a "Sun End Canister' and a "Multiple Docking Adapter End Canister'. Basically, the ATM hardware and software provides a structural interface for the instruments; a closely controlled thermal environment; and a very accurate attitude and pointing control capability.     Bacterial resistance is responsible for a wide variety of health problems, both in children and adults. The persistence of symptoms and infections are mainly treated with beta-lactam antibiotics. The increasing resistance to those antibiotics by bacterial pathogens generated the emergence of extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBLs), an actual public health problem. This is due to rapid mutations of bacteria when exposed to antibiotics. In this case, beta-lactamases are enzymes used by bacteria to hydrolyze the beta-lactam rings present in the antibiotics. Therefore, it was necessary to explore novel molecules as potential beta-lactamases inhibitors to find antibacterial compounds against infection caused by ESBLs. A computational methodology based on molecular docking and molecular dynamic simulations was used to find new microalgae metabolites inhibitors of beta-lactamase. Six 3D beta-lactamase proteins were selected, and the molecular docking revealed that the metabolites belonging to the same structural families, such as phenylacridine (4-Ph), quercetin (Qn), and cryptophycin (Cryp), exhibit a better binding score and binding energy than commercial clinical medicine beta-lactamase inhibitors, such as clavulanic acid, sulbactam, and tazobactam. These results indicate that 4-Ph, Qn, and Cryp molecules, homologous from microalgae metabolites, could be used, likely as novel beta-lactamase inhibitors or as structural templates for new in-silico pharmaceutical designs, with the possibility of combatting beta-lactam resistanc

    Thermal status for different breeds of dairy cattle exposed to summer heat stress in a grazing environment [abstract]

    Abstract only availableA study was conducted to investigate thermal balance of lactating dairy cattle managed in an intensive managed rotational grazing system. The farm was located at the University of Missouri Southwest Research Center in Vernon County, MO. Thirty six lactating dairy cows were blocked by parity, days in milk, milk production and breed. Cows were grouped by breed with 100% Holstein (H, n=8), 75%H:25% Jersey (J) (75H, n=5), 50%H:50%J (50H, n=8), 25%H:75%J (75J, n=7), and 100% J (J, n=8), and maintained on the same pastures from June 15 through August 1, 2006. Cows were rotated to paddocks to maintain ad libitum access to pasture. Ambient variables, including air temperature (Ta) and relative humidity, were measured continuously. Ranges of Ta and calculated THI were 12 to 38C and 55 to 87, respectively. Thermal balance was evaluated prior to morning (0500) and afternoon (1600) milkings by measuring rectal temperature (Tre) and respiration rate (RR) on 16 days throughout the study during periods of maximum and minimum heat stress. Breed groups had different body weights (p < 0.0001) ranging from 530 kg (H) to 378 (J). However, body weight was similar for 75J and 75H (460 kg versus 501 kg, respectively). Although body weights were different across breed, combined change in rectal temperature with Ta (r = 0.89) and THI (r = 0.92) was predictable (p < 0.0001). Change in Tre with increasing Ta and THI was slowest for J and 75J, and highest for H and 75H. Change in Tre was influenced more by breed more than body weight. Respiration rate was correlated with Ta (r = 0.88) and THI (r = 0.89) (p < 0.0001), with 75J being more responsive than 75H. These results suggest that breed selection can be used to improve thermal balance of cows in intensively managed rotational grazing systems.CAFNR On Campus Research Internshi

    From colonial categories to local culture: Evolving state practices of ethnic enumeration in Oceania, 1965-2014

    Numerous scholars have examined how governments in particular times and places have classified their populations by ethnicity, but studies that are both cross-national and longitudinal are rare. Using a unique database of census questionnaires, we examine state practices of ethnic enumeration over a 50-year period (1965–2014) in the 24 countries and areas that comprise Oceania. The region’s extraordinary linguistic and cultural diversity, combined with its complex colonial history and indigenous politics, make it an ideal site for comparative analyses. We find a shift from biological conceptions of difference to a more cultural understanding of group identity, exemplified by a sharp rise in language questions and the decline of race-based inquiries. While local identity labels have largely displaced colonial categories, the imprimatur of previous regimes still lingers, particularly in Melanesia. These shifts in official constructions of ethnoracial differences reflect a gradual lessening of colonial influences on demographic practices
