Economics of prawn culture in Vypeen, Kerala, with emphasis on some little-known facts
With the increasing demand for prawns in export market, extensive culture practices have given
way to semi-intensive or intensive systems in many parts of the country. The perennial and most of the
seasonal ponds of Vypeen Island near Kochi are still of extensive nature with little or no management.
Although, some studies on economics of prawn farming in seasonal ponds are available (George, 1974,
1980; Purushan, 1987; Sathiadhas et al., 1989), such information on the perennial fields is almost
lacking. Diseases, parasites, predators and competitors cause concern in culture systems (Shang, 1981).
Yet, it seems to be ignored in economic analysis except on a very few occasions, as for instance by
Mammen et al. (1980) and Beynon et al. (1981). The present paper, therefore, reports lhe economics of
the perennial prawn culture fields in Vypeen pointing out what harm predation and disease cause in
production. Some observations on the seasonal system are also made for comparison

Comparative Microbial Dynamics in Crassostrea virginica and Crassostrea ariakensis
Considerations to introduce the Suminoe or Asian oyster Crassostrea ariakensis along the East Coast have raised many questions regarding ecology, economics, and human health. To date, research has focused primarily on the ecological and socioeconomic implications of this initiative, yet few studies have assessed its potential
impact on public health. Our work compares the rates of bioaccumulation, depuration and post harvest decay of indicator organisms (such as E. coli) and Vibrio sp. between
Crassostrea virginica and Crassostrea ariakensis in the laboratory. Preliminary results suggest that the rates of bioaccumulation of E. coli in Crassostrea ariakensis were
significantly lower than those for Crassostrea virginica, depuration of E. coli was variable between the two species, and Crassostrea ariakensis post harvest decay rates of
Vibrio sp. were significantly lower than Crassostrea virginica. This research provides coastal managers with insight into the response of Crassostrea ariakensis to bacteria, an important consideration for determining appropriate management strategies for this species. Further field-based studies will be necessary to elucidate the mechanisms responsible for the differences in rates of bioaccumulation and depuration. (PDF contains 40 pages
Galaxy Merger Candidates in High-Redshift Cluster Environments
We compile a sample of spectroscopically- and photometrically-selected
cluster galaxies from four high-redshift galaxy clusters ()
from the Spitzer Adaptation of the Red-Sequence Cluster Survey (SpARCS), and a
comparison field sample selected from the UKIDSS Deep Survey. Using
near-infrared imaging from the \textit{Hubble Space Telescope} we classify
potential mergers involving massive () cluster members by eye, based on morphological
properties such as tidal distortions, double nuclei, and projected near
neighbors within 20 kpc. With a catalogue of 23 spectroscopic and 32
photometric massive cluster members across the four clusters and 65
spectroscopic and 26 photometric comparable field galaxies, we find that after
taking into account contamination from interlopers, of
the cluster members are involved in potential mergers, compared to
of the field galaxies. We see no evidence of merger
enhancement in the central cluster environment with respect to the field,
suggesting that galaxy-galaxy merging is not a stronger source of galaxy
evolution in cluster environments compared to the field at these redshifts.Comment: Accepted by Ap
The combined molecular adjuvant CASAC enhances the CD8+ T cell response to a tumor-associated self-antigen in aged, immunosenescent mice
BACKGROUND: Ineffective induction of T cell mediated immunity in older individuals remains a persistent challenge for vaccine development. Thus, there is a need for more efficient and sophisticated adjuvants that will complement novel vaccine strategies for the elderly. To this end, we have investigated a previously optimized, combined molecular adjuvant, CASAC (Combined Adjuvant for Synergistic Activation of Cellular immunity), incorporating two complementary Toll-like receptor agonists, CpG and polyI:C, a class-II epitope, and interferon (IFN)-γ in aged mice. FINDINGS: In aged mice with typical features of immunosenescence, antigen specific CD8+ T cell responses were stimulated after serial vaccinations with CASAC or Complete/Incomplete Freund's Adjuvant (CFA/IFA) and a class I epitope, deriving either from ovalbumin (SIINFEKL, SIL) or the melanoma-associated self-antigen, tyrosinase-related protein-2 (SVYDFFVWL, SVL). Pentamer analysis revealed that aged, CASAC/SIL-vaccinated animals had substantially higher frequencies of H-2K(b)/SIL-specific CD8+ T cells compared to the CFA/IFA-vaccinated groups. Similarly, higher frequencies of H-2K(b)/SVL-pentamer+ and IFN-γ+ CD8+ T cells were detected in the aged, CASAC + SVL-vaccinated mice than in their CFA/IFA-vaccinated counterparts. In both antigen settings, CASAC promoted significantly better functional CD8+ T cell activity. CONCLUSION: These studies demonstrate that functional CD8+ T cells, specific for both foreign and tumour-associated self-antigens, can be effectively induced in aged immunosenescent mice using the novel multi-factorial adjuvant CASAC
