    On the solution of the purely nonlocal theory of beam elasticity as a limiting case of the two-phase theory

    In the recent literature stance, purely nonlocal theory of elasticity is recognized to lead to ill-posed problems. Yet, we show that, for a beam, a meaningful energy bounded solution of the purely nonlocal theory may still be defined as the limit solution of the two-phase nonlocal theory. For this, we consider the problem of free vibrations of a flexural beam under the two-phase theory of nonlocal elasticity with an exponential kernel, in the presence of rotational inertia. After recasting the integro-differential governing equation and the boundary conditions into purely differential form, a singularly perturbed problem is met that is associated with a pair of end boundary layers. A multi-parametric asymptotic solution in terms of size-effect and local fraction is presented for the eigenfrequencies as well as for the eigenforms for a variety of boundary conditions. It is found that, for simply supported end, the weakest boundary layer is formed and, surprisingly, rotational inertia affects the eigenfrequencies only in the classical sense. Conversely, clamped and free end conditions bring a strong boundary layer and eigenfrequencies are heavily affected by rotational inertia, even for the lowest mode, in a manner opposite to that brought by nonlocality. Remarkably, all asymptotic solutions admit a well defined and energy bounded limit as the local fraction vanishes and the purely nonlocal model is retrieved. Therefore, we may define this limiting case as the proper solution of the purely nonlocal model for a beam. Finally, numerical results support the accuracy of the proposed asymptotic approach

    An unified timing and spectral model for the Anomalous X-ray Pulsars XTE J1810-197 and CXOU J164710.2-455216

    Anomalous X-ray pulsars (AXPs) and soft gamma repeaters (SGRs) are two small classes of X-ray sources strongly suspected to host a magnetar, i.e. an ultra-magnetized neutron star with $B\approx 10^14-10^15 G. Many SGRs/AXPs are known to be variable, and recently the existence of genuinely "transient" magnetars was discovered. Here we present a comprehensive study of the pulse profile and spectral evolution of the two transient AXPs (TAXPs) XTE J1810-197 and CXOU J164710.2-455216. Our analysis was carried out in the framework of the twisted magnetosphere model for magnetar emission. Starting from 3D Monte Carlo simulations of the emerging spectrum, we produced a large database of synthetic pulse profiles which was fitted to observed lightcurves in different spectral bands and at different epochs. This allowed us to derive the physical parameters of the model and their evolution with time, together with the geometry of the two sources, i.e. the inclination of the line-of-sight and of the magnetic axis with respect to the rotation axis. We then fitted the (phase-averaged) spectra of the two TAXPs at different epochs using a model similar to that used to calculate the pulse profiles ntzang in XSPEC) freezing all parameters to the values obtained from the timing analysis, and leaving only the normalization free to vary. This provided acceptable fits to XMM-Newton data in all the observations we analyzed. Our results support a picture in which a limited portion of the star surface close to one of the magnetic poles is heated at the outburst onset. The subsequent evolution is driven both by the cooling/varying size of the heated cap and by a progressive untwisting of the magnetosphere.Comment: 15 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication in Ap

    Time-harmonic analysis of antiplane crack in couple stress elastic materials

    The time harmonic response of a rectilinear and semi-infinite crack in a couple stress (CS) elastic solid under Mode III loading conditions is investigated in the present work. The full-field solution of the dynamic crack problem obtained in [1] through Fourier integral transforms and the Wiener\u2013Hopf technique is generalized here by considering more general loading conditions, consisting in arbitrary reduced stress and couple stress tractions applied at the crack faces. The solution for quasistatic Mode III crack in indeterminate CS elastic materials was given in [2]. Later, the problem of steady-state Mode III crack propagation was investigated in [3]. In the present work, a travelling wave loading, applied in the form of generalized reduced tractions at the crack faces, is considered as the forcing term. As a result, a complex wave pattern appears, which differs significantly from the Mode III classical elastic solution. The results of the present analysis may be used as a building block to address, by means of superposition, the problem of arbitrary antiplane wave propagation in a cracked CS solid. Resonance is triggered when the applied loading is fed into the crack-tip at Rayleigh speed. Elastodynamic stress intensity factors are given, which generalize the corresponding results presented in [2] for the qusistatic framework. They incorporate the effect of the applied loading frequency and thereby account for the interplay of the diffracted waves. A remarkable wave pattern appears which consists of entrained waves extending away from the crack, reflected Rayleigh waves moving along the crack surfaces, localized waves irradiating from the crack-tip and body waves scattered around the crack-tip. Interestingly, the localized wave solution may be greatly advantageous for defect detection through acoustic emission

    The Equivalence Principle, formulated by Einstein generalizing Galileo’s and Newton’s work, is a fundamental principle of modern physics. As such it should be tested as accurately as possible. Its most direct consequence, namely the Universality of Free Fall, can be tested in space, in a low Earth orbit, the crucial advantage being that the driving signal is about three orders of magnitude stronger than on Earth. GALILEO GALILEI (GG) is a small space mission designed for such a high-accuracy test. At the time of print, GG has been selected by ASI (Agenzia Spaziale Italiana) as a candidate for the next small Italian mission. Ground tests of the proposed apparatus now indicate that an accuracy of 1 part in 1017 is within the reach of this small mission

    Climate change has strong impacts on soil conservation and agricultural productivity, with severe consequences on smallholders in developing countries, but virtually no research has been carried out so far on this issue. Therefore, it is necessary to foster the implementation of participatory projects to help communities deal with new difficulties. Sustainable soil management can reduce and even reverse land degradation, helping farmers to adapt to climate change effects. Pro-gress toward sustainability cannot be implemented in small rural communities regardless of local knowledge, which can be addressed using participatory techniques. To this purpose the choice and use of indicators is essential to carry out correct assessments of soil vulnerability integrating local and technical knowledge. The purpose of this review was to study how the problem of building a set of integrated indicators to assess soil quality has been addressed so far and which participatory techniques have been more successfully employed, analyzing studies carried out in rural communities of developing countries. We found out that there is a lack of participated studies dealing with environmental issues. Those that do so address them only indirectly, being centered on present agricultural problems. The studies rarely feature a collaboration with social science experts, consequently the use of participatory techniques lacks protocols and a standardized nomenclature to help in the transfer and generalization of experiences. Women are rarely involved and nearly exclusively in African countries: this could be related to social and cultural conditions, but needs more atten-tion. Different aspects need to be improved to help the implementation of a successful approach in future projects. This review provides a tool to facilitate future interdisciplinary research on integration of local and scientific knowledge and will help to devise more successful strategies to tackle the challenges posed by climate change to smallholders in developing countries

    Classification of Epileptic Activity Through Temporal and Spatial Characterization of Intracranial Recordings

    Focal epilepsy is a chronic condition characterized by hyper-activity and abnormal synchronization of a specific brain region. For pharmacoresistant patients, the surgical resection of the critical area is considered a valid clinical solution, therefore, an accurate localization is crucial to minimize neurological damage. In current clinical routine the characterization of the Epileptogenic Zone (EZ) is performed using invasive methods, such as Stereo-ElectroEncephaloGraphy (SEEG). Medical experts perform the tag of neural electrophysiological recordings by visually inspecting the acquired data, a highly time consuming and subjective procedure. Here we show the results of an automatic multi-modal classification method for the evaluation of critical areas in focal epileptic patients. The proposed method represents an attempt in the characterization of brain areas which integrates the anatomical information on neural tissue, inferred using Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) in combination with spectral features extracted from SEEG recordings

    An Analytic Model for Estimating the Economic and Environmental Impact of Food Cold Supply Chain

    Cold chain management has gained increasing interest among practitioners, researchers and academics; similarly, sustainability is also proving to be an increasingly critical topic in all supply chains and in cold chains in particular. In line with this, this study proposes a model to estimate the economic and environmental impacts in a food cold supply chain (FCSC). The model intended to estimate the total cost and CO2 emissions of a company operating in the cold supply chain, was carried out in Microsoft Excel™. Specifically, the model reproduces the main FCSC processes, i.e., Product collection, Backroom storage, Product delivery and Reverse logistics. For each process, we have exposed the implemented equations. Results show that the product delivery process is the most critical in both economic and environmental terms. Conversely, product collection and reverse logistics process contribute to the total cost and emission to a limited extent. The results obtained provide useful guidelines for supply chain managers to undertake operation decisions aimed at decreasing the economic and/or environmental impact of a FCSC

    Assessment of the economic and environmental sustainability of a food cold supply chain

    Based on environmental and economic factors, reverse logistics (RL) issues have attracted attention among both academia and practitioners. This study investigates the issue of economic and environmental sustainability evaluation in a food cold supply chain (FCSC), which carries out four main different processes, i.e. product collection, backroom storage, products delivery and RL. For the RL process, which is taken as an example, we have detailed the equations implemented in an analytic model to carry out the computation of the economic and environmental sustainability, while for the remaining processes, we present and discuss only the main results obtained. The model was developed under Microsoft Excel™ and is intended to assess the total cost and CO2 emissions of an important company operating as a cold chain logistics service provider. Results of the model show that the highest total cost and environmental impact are due to the product delivery process. Moreover, the results proposed indicate quite clearly the specific activity component where the FCSC managers should intervene to remove or decrease possible inefficiencies and optimize or increase the sustainability of a FCSC

    Quasi-Two-Dimensional Diffusion of Single Ellipsoids: Aspect Ratio and Confinement Effects

    We report on video-microscopy measurements of the translational and rotational Brownian motions of isolated ellipsoidal particles in quasi-two-dimensional sample cells of increasing thickness. The long-time diffusion coefficients were measured along the long (Da) and short (Db) ellipsoid axes, respectively, and the ratio, Da /Db, was determined as a function of wall confinement and particle aspect ratio. In three dimensions (3D), this ratio (Da /Db) cannot be larger than 2, but in quasi-two dimensions, wall confinement was found to substantially alter diffusion anisotropy and substantially slow particle diffusion along the short axis compared to 3D

    Paediatric non-alcoholic fatty liver disease: impact on patients and mothers' quality of life

    Background: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is one of the causes of fatty liver in adults and is currently the primary form of chronic liver disease in children and adolescents. However, the psychological outcome (i.e. the behavioural problems that can in turn be related to psychiatric conditions, like anxiety and mood disorders, or lower quality of life) in children and adolescents suffering of NAFLD has not been extensively explored in the literature. Objectives: The present study aims at evaluating the emotional and behavioural profile in children suffering from NAFLD and the quality of life in their mothers. Patients and Methods: A total of 57 children (18 females/39 males) with NAFLD were compared to 39 age-matched control children (25 females/14 males). All participants were submitted to the following psychological tools to assess behavior, mood, and anxiety: the Multidimensional Anxiety Scale for Children (MASC), the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL), and the Children's Depression Inventory (CDI). Moreover, the mothers of 40 NAFLD and 39 control children completed the World Health Organization Quality of Life-BREF (WHOQOL-BREF) questionnaire. Results: NAFLD children scored significantly higher as compared to control children in MASC (P = 0.001) and CDI total (P < 0.001) scales. The CBCL also revealed significantly higher scores for NAFLD children in total problems (P = 0.046), internalizing symptoms (P = 0.000) and somatic complaints (P < 0.001). The WHOQOL-BREF revealed significantly lower scores for the mothers of NAFLD children in the overall perception of the quality of life (P < 0.001), and in the "relationships" domain (P = 0.023). Conclusions: Increased emotional and behavioural problems were detected in children with NAFLD as compared to healthy control children, together with an overall decrease in their mothers' quality of life. These results support the idea that these patients may benefit from a psychological intervention, ideally involving both children and parents, whose quality of life is likely negatively affected by this disease
