    Constraining Bosonic Supersymmetry from Higgs results and 8 TeV ATLAS multi-jets plus missing energy data

    The collider phenomenology of models with Universal Extra Dimensions (UED) is surprisingly similar to that of supersymmetric (SUSY) scenarios. For each level-1 bosonic (fermionic) Kaluza-Klein (KK) state, there is a fermionic (bosonic) analog in SUSY and thus UED scenarios are often known as bosonic supersymmetry. The minimal version of UED (mUED) gives rise to a quasi-degenerate particle spectrum at each KK-level and thus, can not explain the enhanced Higgs to diphoton decay rate hinted by the ATLAS collaboration of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) experiment. However, in the non-minimal version of the UED (nmUED) model, the enhanced Higgs to diphoton decay rate can be easily explained via the suitable choice of boundary localized kinetic (BLK) terms for higher dimensional fermions and gauge bosons. BLK terms remove the degeneracy in the KK mass spectrum and thus, pair production of level-1 quarks and gluons at the LHC gives rise to hard jets, leptons and large missing energy in the final state. These final states are studied in details by the ATLAS and CMS collaborations in the context of SUSY scenarios. We find that the absence of any significant deviation of the data from the Standard Model (SM) prediction puts a lower bound of about 2.1 TeV on equal mass excited quarks and gluons.Comment: 19 page

    Patients with previously untreated extensive-disease small-cell lung cancer were treated with irinotecan 60 mg m−2 on days 1 and 8 and cisplatin 60 mg m−2 on day 1 with (n=55) or without (n=54) etoposide 50 mg m−2 on days 1–3 with granulocyte colony-stimulating factor support repeated every 3 weeks for four cycles. The triplet regimen was too toxic to be considered for further studies

    Abrogated expression of DEC1 during oesophageal squamous cell carcinoma progression is age- and family history-related and significantly associated with lymph node metastasis

    BACKGROUND: Oesophageal squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) causes the highest number of cancer deaths in some regions of Northern China. Previously, we narrowed down a critical region at 9q33-34, identified to be associated with tumour-suppressive function of deleted in oesophageal cancer 1 (DEC1) in oesophageal SCC. METHODS: We generated DEC1 antibody and constructed tissue microarrays (TMAs) utilising tissue specimens from Henan, a high-risk region for oesophageal SCC, to investigate the importance of DEC1 expression in this cancer. RESULTS: Tissue microarray immunohistochemical staining reveals significant loss of DEC1 from hyperplasia, to tumour, and to lymph node metastasis. In addition, the loss of DEC1 in tumour is age-dependent. Interestingly, there is significant abrogation of DEC1 expression in patients with a family history of oesophageal SCC. Deleted in oesophageal cancer 1 localises to both the cytoplasm and nucleus. The vesicular pattern of DEC1 in the cytoplasm appears to localise at the Golgi and Golgi-endoplasmic reticulum intermediate compartment. CONCLUSION: This is the first TMA study to suggest a clinical association of DEC1 in lymph node metastatic oesophageal SCC, early onset oesophageal SCC and familial oesophageal SCC development. Subcellular localisation of DEC1 and its expression in oesophageal SCC tissues provide important insight for further deciphering the molecular mechanism of DEC1 in oesophageal SCC development.     Gender-specific associations of vision and hearing impairments with adverse health outcomes in older Japanese: a population-based cohort study

    BACKGROUND: Several epidemiological studies have shown that self-reported vision and hearing impairments are associated with adverse health outcomes (AHOs) in older populations; however, few studies have used objective sensory measurements or investigated the role of gender in this association. Therefore, we examined the association of vision and hearing impairments (as measured by objective methods) with AHOs (dependence in activities of daily living or death), and whether this association differed by gender. METHODS: From 2005 to 2006, a total of 801 residents (337 men and 464 women) aged 65 years or older of Kurabuchi Town, Gunma, Japan, participated in a baseline examination that included vision and hearing assessments; they were followed up through September 2008. Vision impairment was defined as a corrected visual acuity of worse than 0.5 (logMAR = 0.3) in the better eye, and hearing impairment was defined as a failure to hear a 30 dB hearing level signal at 1 kHz in the better ear. Information on outcomes was obtained from the town hall and through face-to-face home visit interviews. We calculated the risk ratios (RRs) of AHOs for vision and hearing impairments according to gender. RESULTS: During a mean follow-up period of 3 years, 34 men (10.1%) and 52 women (11.3%) had AHOs. In both genders, vision impairment was related to an elevated risk of AHOs (multi-adjusted RR for men and women together = 1.60, 95% CI = 1.05-2.44), with no statistically significant interaction between the genders. In contrast, a significant association between hearing impairment and AHOs (multi-adjusted RR = 3.10, 95% CI = 1.43-6.72) was found only in the men. CONCLUSION: In this older Japanese population, sensory impairments were clearly associated with AHOs, and the association appeared to vary according to gender. Gender-specific associations between sensory impairments and AHOs warrant further investigation

    A model of neutrino mass and dark matter with large neutrinoless double beta decay

    We propose a model where neutrino masses are generated at three loop order but neutrinoless double beta decay occurs at one loop. Thus we can have large neutrinoless double beta decay observable in the future experiments even when the neutrino masses are very small. The model receives strong constraints from the neutrino data and lepton flavor violating decays, which substantially reduces the number of free parameters. Our model also opens up the possibility of having several new scalars below the TeV regime, which can be explored at the collider experiments. Additionally, our model also has an unbroken Z2 symmetry which allows us to identify a viable Dark Matter candidate
