    Optical tecnology developments in biomedicine: history, current and future

    Biomedical optics is a rapidly emerging field for medical imaging and diagnostics. This paper reviews several biomedical optical technologies that have been developed and translated for either clinical or pre-clinical applications. Specifically, we focus on the following technologies: 1) near-infrared spectroscopy and tomography, 2) optical coherence tomography, 3) fluorescence spectroscopy and imaging, and 4) optical molecular imaging. There representative biomedical applications are also discussed here

    Citation analysis of the scientific publications of Britton Chance in ISI citation indexes

    Britton Chance was a pioneer in many scientific fields such as enzymatic reaction kinetics, bioenergetics, metabolism, in vivo NMR, and biophotonics. As an engineer, physical chemist, physicist, physiologist, biophysicist, biochemist, innovator and educator, he had worked in diversified fields over extended periods between 1926 until his death in 2010, at the age of 97. In order to illustrate his scientific career and great impact on research from a new perspective, we employ scientometric analysis tools to analyze the publications of Britton Chance with data downloaded from the ISI Citation Indexes in April 2013. We included articles, reviews and proceeding papers but excluded meeting abstracts. In total, we obtained 1023 publication records with 1236 authors in 266 journals with 17,114 citations from 1945 to 2013. We show the annual publications and citations that Britton Chance received from 1945 to 2013, and generate HistCite maps on the basis of the global citations (GCS) and local (self) citations (LCS) to show the citation relationships among the top-30 publications of Britton Chance. Metabolism and the development of physical methods to probe it appear to be the connecting thread of the lifelong research of Britton Chance. Furthermore, we generate the journal map and co-authorship map to show the broad scope of research topics and collaborators and the high impacts of the scientific oeuvre of Britton Chance ranging from physics, engineering, chemistry and biology to medicine

    Discrepancy between cardiorespiratory system and skeletal muscle in elite cyclists after hypoxic training

    BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of hypoxic training on the cardiorespiratory system and skeletal muscle among well-trained endurance athletes in a randomized cross-over design. METHODS: Eight junior national level competitive cyclists were separated into two groups; Group A trained under normoxic condition (21% O(2)) for 2 hours/day, 3 days/week for 3 weeks while Group B used the same training protocol under hypoxic condition (15% O(2)). After 3 weeks of each initial training condition, five weeks of self-training under usual field conditions intervened before the training condition was switched from NT to HT in Group A, from HT to NT in Group B. The subjects were tested at sea level before and after each training period. O(2 )uptake ([Image: see text] O(2)), blood samples, and muscle deoxygenation were measured during bicycle exercise test. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: No changes in maximal workload, arterial O(2 )content, [Image: see text] O(2 )at lactate threshold and [Image: see text] O(2max )were observed before or after each training period. In contrast, deoxygenation change during submaximal exercise in the vastus lateralis was significantly higher at HT than NT (p < 0.01). In addition, half time of oxygenation recovery was significantly faster after HT (13.2 ± 2.6 sec) than NT (18.8 ± 2.7 sec) (p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Three weeks of HT may not give an additional performance benefit at sea level for elite competitive cyclists, even though HT may induce some physiological adaptations on muscle tissue level

    Experimental investigation of NIRS spatial sensitivity

    Near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) is regarded as a potential medical diagnostic technique for investigation of hemodynamic changes. However, uncertainties pertaining to the origin of NIRS signals have hampered its clinical interpretation. The uncertainities in NIRS measurements especially in case of living tissues are due to lack of rigorous combined theoretical-experimental studies resulting in clear understanding of the origin of NIRS signals. For their reliable interpretation it is important to understand the relationship between spatial changes in optical properties and corresponding changes in the NIRS signal. We investigated spatial sensitivity of near infrared optical measurements using an experimental approach. It uses a liquid optical phantom as tissue equivalent, which is explored under robot-control by a small, approximately point like perturbation of desired optical properties, and a NIRS instrument for trans-illumination/reflection measurements. The experimentally obtained sensitivity has been analyzed and compared with numerical simulations. In preliminary experiments we investigated the influence of various optical properties of the medium and of source/detector distances on the spatial sensitivity distribution. The acquired sensitivity maps can be used to define characteristic parameters. As an example, we used a 25% threshold to define a penetration depth measure which provides values in good accordance with published ones. To the best of our knowledge this is the first experimental study of NIRS spatial sensitivity. The presented method will allow in depth experimental investigation of the influence of various conditions pertaining to medium such as optical properties of tissue (scattering and absorption) and of the source/detector configuration

    Prolonged constant load cycling exercise is associated with reduced gross efficiency and increased muscle oxygen uptake

    This study investigated the effects of prolonged constant load cycling exercise on cycling efficiency and local muscle oxygen uptake responses. Fourteen well-trained cyclists each completed a 2-h steady-state cycling bout at 60% of their maximal minute power output to assess changes in gross cycling efficiency (GE) and muscle oxygen uptake (mVO2) at time points 5, 30, 60, 90, and 120 min. Near-infrared spatially resolved spectroscopy (NIRS) was used to continually monitor tissue oxygenation of the Vastus Lateralis muscle, with arterial occlusions (OCC) applied to assess mVO2 . The half-recovery time of oxygenated hemoglobin (HbO2 ) was also assessed pre and post the 2-h cycling exercise by measuring the hyperemic response following a 5-min OCC. GE significantly declined during the 2-h cycling bout (18.4 ± 1.6 to 17.4 ± 1.4%; P < 0.01). Conversely, mVO2 increased, being significantly higher after 90 and 120 min than at min 5 (+0.04 mlO2 /min/100 g; P = 0.03). The half-recovery time for HbO2 was increased comparing pre and post the 2-h cycling exercise (+7.1 ± 19s), albeit not significantly (d: 0.48; P = 0.27). This study demonstrates that GE decreases during prolonged constant load cycling exercise and provides evidence of an increased mVO2 , suggestive of progressive mitochondrial or contractile inefficiency
