Design for Longevity: Ongoing Use of Instruments from NIME 2010-14

    Get PDF
Every new edition of NIME brings dozens of new DMIs and the feeling that only a few of them will eventually break through. Previous work tried to address this issue with a deductive approach by formulating design frameworks; we addressed this issue with a inductive approach by elaborat- ing on successes and failures of previous DMIs. We contacted 97 DMI makers that presented a new instrument at five successive editions of NIME (2010-2014); 70 answered. They were asked to indicate the original motivation for designing the DMI and to present information about its uptake. Results confirmed that most of the instruments have di culties establishing themselves. Also, they were asked to reflect on the specific factors that facilitated and those that hindered instrument longevity. By grounding these reflections on existing reserach on NIME and HCI, we propose a series of design considerations for future DMIs

Creating space for facilitated music performance: gesture controlled sound for users with complex disabilities

    Get PDF
Musical interactions have the potential to increase emotional well-being, self-confidence and self-motivation. However, the ability to actively participate in creative activities involving music performance has so far been difficult for users with complex disabilities. This paper discusses placing a technology probe, using gesture based musical controls, in an existing music technology project for users with complex disabilities (conditions which affect both cognitive and motor abilities of an individual). The focus is on understanding the needs of this user group in a participatory design approach for creative music technologies that allow for tailored accessibility. Outcomes from this research show that many multi-level social interactions surrounding the technology, users, audience, and any third party facilitators exist in the context of ‘facilitated performance’. Results suggest that including facilitators in the design of Digital Musical Instruments (DMIs) could allow for improved accessibility for users with complex disabilities

Biological invasions are one of the main threats to forest health. Although Arhopalus rusticus and Arhopalus syriacus (Cerambycidae) are alien species in South America, the ecology of these invasive species is not well studied. Here, we examined the effect of the female size on potential fecundity, size and number of mature eggs in ovaries, in both insect species. We also compared egg morphometric characteristics, larval measurements, larval development and survival between these two species. We found a positive relationship between the female size and the number of eggs in their ovaries but no relationship between the female size and egg morphometric characteristics in each of these two species. The females of A. rusticus were significantly larger and had bigger eggs than those of A. syriacus, but no significant difference was observed in the number of eggs between them. Larval body length and head capsule exuviae width were larger in A. rusticus than in A. syriacus. Arhopalus rusticus had the highest larval survival rate, but A. syriacus had the shortest larval period. Thus, female and egg size, as well as larval size and survivorship are competitive advantages to A. rusticus. However, A. syriacus has a similar number of eggs to A. rusticus and faster larval development; these could be key features to explain the coexistence of these two species.Fil: Nime, Mónica Fernanda. Pipeline for recording datasets and running neural networks on the Bela embedded hardware platform

    Get PDF
Deploying deep learning models on embedded devices is an arduous task: oftentimes, there exist no platform-specific instructions, and compilation times can be considerably large due to the limited computational resources available on-device. Moreover, many music-making applications de- mand real-time inference. Embedded hardware platforms for audio, such as Bela, offer an entry point for beginners into physical audio computing; however, the need for cross- compilation environments and low-level software develop- ment tools for deploying embedded deep learning models imposes high entry barriers on non-expert users. We present a pipeline for deploying neural networks in the Bela embedded hardware platform. In our pipeline, we include a tool to record a multichannel dataset of sen- sor signals. Additionally, we provide a dockerised cross- compilation environment for faster compilation. With this pipeline, we aim to provide a template for programmers and makers to prototype and experiment with neural networks for real-time embedded musical applications

SketchSynth: a browser-based sketching interface for sound control

    Get PDF
SketchSynth is an interface that allows users to create mappings between synthesised sound and a graphical sketch input based on human cross-modal perception. The project is rooted in the authors' research which collected 2692 sound-sketches from 178 participants representing their associations with various sounds. The interface extracts sketch features in real-time that were shown to correlate with sound characteristics and can be mapped to synthesis and audio effect parameters via Open Sound Control (OSC). This modular approach allows for an easy integration into an existing workflow and can be tailored to individual preferences. The interface can be accessed online through a web-browser on a computer, laptop, smartphone or tablet and does not require specialised hard- or software. We demonstrate SketchSynth with an iPad for sketch input to control synthesis and audio effect parameters in the Ableton Live digital audio workstation (DAW). A MIDI controller is used to play notes and trigger pre-recorded accompaniment. This work serves as an example of how perceptual research can help create strong, meaningful gesture-to-sound mappings
