    Sociale ongelijkheid en psychische storingen

    Sociale ongelijkheid ondervindt de laatste jaren hernieuwde aandacht. Het accent ligt daarbij op ongelijkheid in kansen: zoals in het onderwijs (Van Heek e.a., 1968; Jencks, 1972; Peschar, 1975; Meynen, 1977; Karabel en Halsey, 1977; Dronkers, 1978; Wesselingh, 1979) in de rechtsgang (Jongman, 1972) en in de aanspraak op rechtshulp (Schuyt e.a., 1976). Rond andere maatschappelijke instituties- zoals belasting, cultuur en gezondheidszorg - is echter nog maar een begin van ruchtbaarheid over ongelijkheid waarneembaar. Voorwerp van wetenschappelijk onderzoek zijn vooral óórzaken van beperkingen in de kansen van mensen in lagere lagen van de bevolking. De gevólgen van sociale ongelijkheid voor de ervaringen van mensen zijn minder onderzocht. Vooral in Engeland zijn er echter wel voorbeelden van te vinden (Runciman, 1966; Goldthorpe e.a., 1969; Bulmer, 1975). Ook in enkele onderzoeken waarin kwalitatieve methoden werden toegepast is de vraag naar de beleving van ongelijkheid aan de orde gesteld (Sennet en Cobb, 1973; Rubin, 1976; Nijsten e.a., 1979). Kwalitatief onderzoek is van betekenis om betrouwbare informatie te verkrijgen. Ervaringen en belevingen komen in diepgaande gesprekken en bij langdurig verblijf onder de onderzochten duidelijker naar voren dan in een geprogrammeerd interview. Nauwkeuriger analyse van de mate waarin ervaringen tot stand komen onder invloed van ongelijkheid in levensomstandigheden vereist echter gestandaardiseerd onderzoek bij grote aantallen mensen. In dergelijk meer kwantificerend onderzoek kan de beleving van ongelijkheid gerelateerd worden aan gespecificeerde informatie over de feitelijke ongelijkheid in levensomstandigheden

    Stormwater management strategies: source control versus end of pipe

    Storm sewers are known to significantly contribute to annual pollutant loads to receiving water bodies. The storm sewers of the city of Almere discharge the stormwater of 1384 ha of impervious area via 700 storm sewer outfalls (SSOs) to the local receiving water system. This water system suffers from eutrophication and long term build-up of pollutant levels in the sediment bed. In order to be able to select the most effective stormwater management strategy, the municipality of Almere and Water Authority Zuiderzeeland have launched a 2 year extensive monitoring project to measure the storm water quality and the potential impact of source control and end of pipe measures to decrease the emission via SSOs. Source control measures, such as removal of illicit connections and increasing the cleaning frequency of gully pots showed to be most effective. The potential impact of end of pipe solutions based on settling showed to be very limited due to the low settleability of solids in the storm water of Almere at the SSOs

    Controlling collapse in Bose-Einstein condensates by temporal modulation of the scattering length

    We consider, by means of the variational approximation (VA) and direct numerical simulations of the Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) equation, the dynamics of 2D and 3D condensates with a scattering length containing constant and harmonically varying parts, which can be achieved with an ac magnetic field tuned to the Feshbach resonance. For a rapid time modulation, we develop an approach based on the direct averaging of the GP equation,without using the VA. In the 2D case, both VA and direct simulations, as well as the averaging method, reveal the existence of stable self-confined condensates without an external trap, in agreement with qualitatively similar results recently reported for spatial solitons in nonlinear optics. In the 3D case, the VA again predicts the existence of a stable self-confined condensate without a trap. In this case, direct simulations demonstrate that the stability is limited in time, eventually switching into collapse, even though the constant part of the scattering length is positive (but not too large). Thus a spatially uniform ac magnetic field, resonantly tuned to control the scattering length, may play the role of an effective trap confining the condensate, and sometimes causing its collapse.Comment: 7 figure

    Symmetrically coupled higher-order nonlinear Schroedinger equations: singularity analysis and integrability

    The integrability of a system of two symmetrically coupled higher-order nonlinear Schr\"{o}dinger equations with parameter coefficients is tested by means of the singularity analysis. It is proven that the system passes the Painlev\'{e} test for integrability only in ten distinct cases, of which two are new. For one of the new cases, a Lax pair and a multi-field generalization are obtained; for the other one, the equations of the system are uncoupled by a nonlinear transformation.Comment: 12 pages, LaTeX2e, IOP style, final version, to appear in J.Phys.A:Math.Ge

    Effect of age and sex on immune checkpoint expression and kinetics in human T cells

    BACKGROUND: Immune checkpoints are crucial molecules in maintaining a proper immune balance. Even though age and sex are known to have effects on the immune system, the interplay between age, sex and immune checkpoint expression by T cells is not known. The aim of this study was to determine whether age and sex affect immune checkpoint expression by T cells and if age and sex affect the kinetics of immune checkpoint expression following ex vivo stimulation. In this study, whole blood samples of 20 healthy young adults (YA, 9 males and 11 females) and 20 healthy older adults (OA, 9 males and 11 females) were stained for lymphocyte lineage markers and immune checkpoints and frequencies of CD28+, PD-1+, VISTA+ and CD40L+ T cells were determined. Immune checkpoint expression kinetics were studied following ex vivo anti-CD3/anti-CD28 stimulation of T cells from young and older healthy adults. RESULTS: We report an age-associated increase of CD40L + CD4+ and CD40L + CD8+ T-cell frequencies, whereas CD40+ B-cell frequencies were decreased in older adults, suggesting modulation of the CD40L-CD40 interaction with age. Immune checkpoint expression kinetics revealed differences in magnitude between CD4+ and CD8+ T cells independent of age and sex. Further analysis of CD4+ T-cell subsets revealed an age-associated decrease of especially PD-1 + CD4+ memory T cells which tracked with the female sex. CONCLUSION: Collectively, our results demonstrate that both age and sex modulate expression of immune checkpoints by human T cells. These findings may have implications for optimising vaccination and immune checkpoint immunotherapy and move the field towards precision medicine in the management of older patient groups

    Gene silencing in tick cell lines using small interfering or long double-stranded RNA

    Gene silencing by RNA interference (RNAi) is an important research tool in many areas of biology. To effectively harness the power of this technique in order to explore tick functional genomics and tick-microorganism interactions, optimised parameters for RNAi-mediated gene silencing in tick cells need to be established. Ten cell lines from four economically important ixodid tick genera (Amblyomma, Hyalomma, Ixodes and Rhipicephalus including the sub-species Boophilus) were used to examine key parameters including small interfering RNA (siRNA), double stranded RNA (dsRNA), transfection reagent and incubation time for silencing virus reporter and endogenous tick genes. Transfection reagents were essential for the uptake of siRNA whereas long dsRNA alone was taken up by most tick cell lines. Significant virus reporter protein knockdown was achieved using either siRNA or dsRNA in all the cell lines tested. Optimum conditions varied according to the cell line. Consistency between replicates and duration of incubation with dsRNA were addressed for two Ixodes scapularis cell lines; IDE8 supported more consistent and effective silencing of the endogenous gene subolesin than ISE6, and highly significant knockdown of the endogenous gene 2I1F6 in IDE8 cells was achieved within 48 h incubation with dsRNA. In summary, this study shows that gene silencing by RNAi in tick cell lines is generally more efficient with dsRNA than with siRNA but results vary between cell lines and optimal parameters need to be determined for each experimental system
