Holographic Coulomb Branch Flows with N=1 Supersymmetry
We obtain a large, new class of N=1 supersymmetric holographic flow
backgrounds with U(1)^3 symmetry. These solutions correspond to flows toward
the Coulomb branch of the non-trivial N=1 supersymmetric fixed point. The
massless (complex) chiral fields are allowed to develop vevs that are
independent of their two phase angles, and this corresponds to allowing the
brane to spread with arbitrary, U(1)^2 invariant, radial distributions in each
of these directions. Our solutions are "almost Calabi-Yau:" The metric is
hermitian with respect to an integrable complex structure, but is not Kahler.
The "modulus squared" of the holomorphic (3,0)-form is the volume form, and the
complete solution is characterized by a function that must satisfy a single
partial differential equation that is closely related to the Calabi-Yau
condition. The deformation from a standard Calabi-Yau background is driven by a
non-trivial, non-normalizable 3-form flux dual to a fermion mass that reduces
the supersymmetry to N=1. This flux also induces dielectric polarization of the
D3-branes into D5-branes.Comment: 22 pages; harvmac. Typos corrected;small improvements in presentatio
A harmonic family of dielectric flow solutions with maximal supersymmetry
We construct a new harmonic family: dielectric flow solutions with maximal
supersymmetry in eleven-dimensional supergravity. These solutions are
asymptotically AdS_4 x S^7, while in the infra-red the M2 branes are
dielectrically polarized into M5 branes. These solutions are holographically
dual to vacua of the mass deformed theory on M2 branes. They also provide an
interesting insight on the supergravity solutions sourced by giant gravitons,
allowing one to see how supergravity solves the giant graviton puzzle.Comment: 21 pages, LaTeX. reference adde
Babo1, formerly Vop1 and Cop1/2, is no eyespot photoreceptor but a basal-body protein illuminating cell division in Volvox carteri.
von der Heyde EL, Hallmann A. Babo1, formerly Vop1 and Cop1/2, is no eyespot photoreceptor but a basal-body protein illuminating cell division in Volvox carteri. The Plant journal : for cell and molecular biology. 2020;102(2):276-298.In photosynthetic organisms many processes are light-dependent and sensing of light requires light-sensitive proteins. The supposed eyespot-photoreceptor protein Babo1 (formerly Vop1) has previously been classified as an opsin due to the capacity for binding retinal. Here, we analyze Babo1 and provide evidence that it is no opsin. Due to the localization at the basal bodies, the former Vop1 and Cop1/2 proteins were renamed V.c. Babo1 and C.r. Babo1. We reveal a large family of more than sixty Babo1-related proteins from a wide range of species. The detailed subcellular localization of fluorescence-tagged Babo1 shows that it accumulates at the basal apparatus. More precisely, it is located predominantly at the basal bodies and to a lesser extent at the four strands of rootlet microtubules. We trace Babo1 during basal body separation and cell division. Dynamic structural rearrangements of Babo1 particularly occur right before the first cell division. In four-celled embryos Babo1 was exclusively found at the oldest basal bodies of the embryo and on the corresponding d-roots. The unequal distribution of Babo1 in four-celled embryos could be an integral part of a geometrical system in early embryogenesis, which establishes the anterior-posterior polarity and influences the spatial arrangement of all embryonic structures and characteristics. Due to its retinal-binding capacity, Babo1 could also be responsible for the unequal distribution of retinoids, knowing that such concentration gradients of retinoids can be essential for the correct patterning during embryogenesis of more complex organisms. Thus, our findings push the Babo1 research in another direction. © 2019 The Authors The Plant Journal © 2019 John Wiley & Sons Ltd
Elevated left and reduced right orbitomedial prefrontal fractional anisotropy in adults with bipolar disorder revealed by tract-based spatial statistics
Context - Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) studies in adults with bipolar disorder (BD) indicate altered white matter (WM) in the orbitomedial prefrontal cortex (OMPFC), potentially underlying abnormal prefrontal corticolimbic connectivity and mood dysregulation in BD. Objective - To use tract-based spatial statistics (TBSS) to examine WM skeleton (ie, the most compact whole-brain WM) in subjects with BD vs healthy control subjects. Design - Cross-sectional, case-control, whole-brain DTI using TBSS. Setting - University research institute. Participants - Fifty-six individuals, 31 having a DSM-IV diagnosis of BD type I (mean age, 35.9 years [age range, 24-52 years]) and 25 controls (mean age, 29.5 years [age range, 19-52 years]). Main Outcome Measures - Fractional anisotropy (FA) longitudinal and radial diffusivities in subjects with BD vs controls (covarying for age) and their relationships with clinical and demographic variables. Results - Subjects with BD vs controls had significantly greater FA (t > 3.0, P = .05 corrected) in the left uncinate fasciculus (reduced radial diffusivity distally and increased longitudinal diffusivity centrally), left optic radiation (increased longitudinal diffusivity), and right anterothalamic radiation (no significant diffusivity change). Subjects with BD vs controls had significantly reduced FA (t > 3.0, P = .05 corrected) in the right uncinate fasciculus (greater radial diffusivity). Among subjects with BD, significant negative correlations (P < .01) were found between age and FA in bilateral uncinate fasciculi and in the right anterothalamic radiation, as well as between medication load and FA in the left optic radiation. Decreased FA (P < .01) was observed in the left optic radiation and in the right anterothalamic radiation among subjects with BD taking vs those not taking mood stabilizers, as well as in the left optic radiation among depressed vs remitted subjects with BD. Subjects having BD with vs without lifetime alcohol or other drug abuse had significantly decreased FA in the left uncinate fasciculus. Conclusions - To our knowledge, this is the first study to use TBSS to examine WM in subjects with BD. Subjects with BD vs controls showed greater WM FA in the left OMPFC that diminished with age and with alcohol or other drug abuse, as well as reduced WM FA in the right OMPFC. Mood stabilizers and depressed episode reduced WM FA in left-sided sensory visual processing regions among subjects with BD. Abnormal right vs left asymmetry in FA in OMPFC WM among subjects with BD, likely reflecting increased proportions of left-sided longitudinally aligned and right-sided obliquely aligned myelinated fibers, may represent a biologic mechanism for mood dysregulation in BD
Adding a Brane to the Brane-Anti-Brane Action in BSFT
We attempt to generalize the effective action for the D-brane-anti-D-brane
system obtained from boundary superstring field theory (BSFT) by adding an
extra D-brane to it to obtain a covariantized action for 2 D-branes and 1
anti-D-brane. We discuss the approximations made to obtain the effective action
in closed form. Among other properties, this effective action admits solitonic
solutions of codimension 2 (vortices) when one of the D-brane is far separated
from the brane-anti-brane pair.Comment: 23 pages, 2 figures, minor revision
Brane Interaction as the Origin of Inflation
We reanalyze brane inflation with brane-brane interactions at an angle, which
include the special case of brane-anti-brane interaction. If nature is
described by a stringy realization of the brane world scenario today (with
arbitrary compactification), and if some additional branes were present in the
early universe, we find that an inflationary epoch is generically quite
natural, ending with a big bang when the last branes collide. In an interesting
brane inflationary scenario suggested by generic string model-building, we use
the density perturbation observed in the cosmic microwave background and the
coupling unification to find that the string scale is comparable to the GUT
scale.Comment: 28 pages, 8 figures, 2 tables, JHEP forma
Using Genetic Variation to Explore the Causal Effect of Maternal Pregnancy Adiposity on Future Offspring Adiposity: A Mendelian Randomisation Study
Background: It has been suggested that greater maternal adiposity during pregnancy affects lifelong risk of offspring fatness via intrauterine mechanisms. Our aim was to use Mendelian randomisation (MR) to investigate the causal effect of intrauterine exposure to greater maternal body mass index (BMI) on offspring BMI and fat mass from childhood to early adulthood. Methods and Findings: We used maternal genetic variants as instrumental variables (IVs) to test the causal effect of maternal BMI in pregnancy on offspring fatness (BMI and dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry [DXA] determined fat mass index [FMI]) in a MR approach. This was investigated, with repeat measurements, from ages 7 to 18 in the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC; n = 2,521 to 3,720 for different ages). We then sought to replicate findings with results for BMI at age 6 in Generation R (n = 2,337 for replication sample; n = 6,057 for total pooled sample). In confounder-adjusted multivariable regression in ALSPAC, a 1 standard deviation (SD, equivalent of 3.7 kg/m2) increase in maternal BMI was associated with a 0.25 SD (95% CI 0.21â0.29) increase in offspring BMI at age 7, with similar results at later ages and when FMI was used as the outcome. A weighted genetic risk score was generated from 32 genetic variants robus
An Improved Brane Anti-Brane Action from Boundary Superstring Field Theory and Multi-Vortex Solutions
We present an improved effective action for the D-brane-anti-D-brane system
obtained from boundary superstring field theory. Although the action looks
highly non-trivial, it has simple explicit multi-vortex (i.e. codimension-2
multi-BPS D-brane) multi-anti-vortex solutions. The solutions have a curious
degeneracy corresponding to different ``magnetic'' fluxes at the core of each
vortex. We also generalize the brane anti-brane effective action that is
suitable for the study of the inflationary scenario and the production of
defects in the early universe. We show that when a brane and anti-brane are
distantly separated, although the system is classically stable it can decay via
quantum tunneling through the barrier.Comment: 24 pages, 1 figure, JHEP3.cls; v2: references added, tunneling rate

Resonant transmission through an open quantum dot
We have measured the low-temperature transport properties of a quantum dot
formed in a one-dimensional channel. In zero magnetic field this device shows
quantized ballistic conductance plateaus with resonant tunneling peaks in each
transition region between plateaus. Studies of this structure as a function of
applied perpendicular magnetic field and source-drain bias indicate that
resonant structure deriving from tightly bound states is split by Coulomb
charging at zero magnetic field.Comment: To be published in Phys. Rev. B (1997). 8 LaTex pages with 5 figure
