    Magnetization of a two-dimensional electron gas with a second filled subband

    We have measured the magnetization of a dual-subband two-dimensional electron gas, confined in a GaAs/AlGaAs heterojunction. In contrast to two-dimensional electron gases with a single subband, we observe non-1/B-periodic, triangularly shaped oscillations of the magnetization with an amplitude significantly less than 1μB1 \mu_{\mathrm{B}}^* per electron. All three effects are explained by a field dependent self-consistent model, demonstrating the shape of the magnetization is dominated by oscillations in the confining potential. Additionally, at 1 K, we observe small oscillations at magnetic fields where Landau-levels of the two different subbands cross.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

    PMN J1632-0033: A new gravitationally lensed quasar

    We report the discovery of a gravitationally lensed quasar resulting from our survey for lenses in the southern sky. Radio images of PMN J1632-0033 with the VLA and ATCA exhibit two compact, flat-spectrum components with separation 1.47" and flux density ratio 13.2. Images with the HST reveal the optical counterparts to the radio components and also the lens galaxy. An optical spectrum of the bright component, obtained with the first Magellan telescope, reveals quasar emission lines at redshift 3.42. Deeper radio images with MERLIN and the VLBA reveal a faint third radio component located near the center of the lens galaxy, which is either a third image of the background quasar or faint emission from the lens galaxy.Comment: 21 pp., including 4 figures; thoroughly revised in light of new MERLIN/HST data; accepted for publication in A

    PMN J1838-3427: A new gravitationally lensed quasar

    We report the discovery of a new double-image quasar that was found during a search for gravitational lenses in the southern sky. Radio source PMN J1838-3427 is composed of two flat-spectrum components with separation 1", flux density ratio 14:1 and matching spectral indices, in VLA and VLBA images. Ground-based BRI images show the optical counterpart (total I=18.6) is also double with the same separation and position angle as the radio components. An HST/WFPC2 image reveals the lens galaxy. The optical flux ratio (27:1) is higher than the radio value probably due to differential extinction of the components by the lens galaxy. An optical spectrum of the bright component contains quasar emission lines at z=2.78 and several absorption features, including prominent Ly-alpha absorption. The lens galaxy redshift could not be measured but is estimated to be z=0.36 +/- 0.08. The image configuration is consistent with the simplest plausible models for the lens potential. The flat radio spectrum and observed variability of PMN J1838-3427 suggest the time delay between flux variations of the components is measurable, and could thus provide an independent measurement of H_0.Comment: 23 pages, incl. 6 figures, to appear in A.J.; replaced with accepted version; minor changes to text, improved figure

    Exceptional sperm cooperation in the wood mouse

    Spermatozoa from a single male will compete for fertilization of ova with spermatozoa from another male when present in the female reproductive tract at the same time. Close genetic relatedness predisposes individuals towards altruism, and as haploid germ cells of an ejaculate will have genotypic similarity of 50%, it is predicted that spermatozoa may display cooperation and altruism to gain an advantage when inter-male sperm competition is intense. We report here the probable altruistic behaviour of spermatozoa in an eutherian mammal. Spermatozoa of the common wood mouse, Apodemus sylvaticus, displayed a unique morphological transformation resulting in cooperation in distinctive aggregations or 'trains' of hundreds or thousands of cells, which significantly increased sperm progressive motility. Eventual dispersal of sperm trains was associated with most of the spermatozoa undergoing a premature acrosome reaction. Cells undergoing an acrosome reaction in aggregations remote from the egg are altruistic in that they help sperm transport to the egg but compromise their own fertilizing ability

    Cross-cultural effects of color, but not morphological masculinity, on perceived attractiveness of men's faces

The role of masculinity (which for adults is thought to be a relatively stable shape cue to developmental testosterone levels) in male facial attractiveness has been examined, with mixed results. Recent work on the perception of skin color (a more variable cue to current health status) indicates that increased skin redness, yellowness, and lightness enhance apparent health. It has been suggested that stable cues such as masculinity may be less important to attractiveness judgments than short-term, more variable health cues. We examined associations between male facial attractiveness, masculinity, and skin color in African and Caucasian populations. Masculinity was not found to be associated with attractiveness in either ethnic group. However, skin color was found to be an important predictor of attractiveness judgments, particularly for own-ethnicity faces. Our results suggest that more plastic health cues, such as skin color, are more important than developmental cues such as masculinity. Further, unfamiliarity with natural skin color variation in other ethnic groups may limit observers' ability to utilize these color cues

    Shigella sonnei genome sequencing and phylogenetic analysis indicate recent global dissemination from Europe

    Shigella are human-adapted Escherichia coli that have gained the ability to invade the human gut mucosa and cause dysentery1,2, spreading efficiently via low-dose fecal-oral transmission3,4. Historically, S. sonnei has been predominantly responsible for dysentery in developed countries, but is now emerging as a problem in the developing world, apparently replacing the more diverse S. flexneri in areas undergoing economic development and improvements in water quality4-6. Classical approaches have shown S. sonnei is genetically conserved and clonal7. We report here whole-genome sequencing of 132 globally-distributed isolates. Our phylogenetic analysis shows that the current S. sonnei population descends from a common ancestor that existed less than 500 years ago and has diversified into several distinct lineages with unique characteristics. Our analysis suggests the majority of this diversification occurred in Europe, followed by more recent establishment of local pathogen populations in other continents predominantly due to the pandemic spread of a single, rapidly-evolving, multidrug resistant lineage

    Structurally photo-active metal–organic frameworks: Incorporation methods, response tuning, and potential applications

    Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) are an important family of materials due to the properties that make them well suited to a range of applications. This includes structurally photo-active MOFs, which have properties that can be efficiently modulated through controlled light irradiation, making them ideal due to the cost-effectiveness and noninvasive nature of this stimulus. The incorporation of structurally photo-active functional groups into MOFs has occurred through either guest inclusion, as pendant moieties, or as part of a ligand's backbone. While initial studies into the incorporation of these groups focused on prominent photo-switches such as azobenzenes, the literature has expanded to include other classes described in the wider photo-switch literature, most notably spiropyrans (SPs). The incorporation of alternative photo-switching classes has currently benefited the field through tuning the light responsive wavelength. Initial inquiries demonstrated suitable function in gas sorption applications where irradiation could be exploited for inducing adsorption or desorption. Furthermore, the potential applications explored in the literature have also recently expanded to include inquiries into other commercial functions, such as desalination [R. Ou et al., Nat. Sustain. 3, 1052–1058 (2020)], photo-lithography [H. A. Schwartz et al., Inorg. Chem. 56(21), 13100–13110 (2017)], and drug capture/release [X. Meng et al., Sci. Adv. 2(8), 2–8 (2016)]

    Oral steroids for the resolution of otitis media with effusion (OME) in children (OSTRICH): study protocol for a randomised controlled trial

    Background Otitis media with effusion (OME) is an accumulation of fluid in the middle ear affecting about 80% of children by the age of 4 years. While OME usually resolves spontaneously, it can affect speech, behaviour and development. Children with persistent hearing loss associated with OME are usually offered hearing aids or insertion of ventilation tubes through the tympanic membrane. Oral steroids may be a safe and effective treatment for OME, which could be delivered in primary care. It has the potential to benefit large numbers of children and reduce the burden of care on them and on health services. However, previous trials have either been too small with too short a follow up period, or of too poor quality to give a definite answer. The aim of the OSTRICH trial is to determine if a short course of oral steroids improves the hearing of children with OME in the short and longer term. Methods/Design 380 participants (children aged 2-8 years) are recruited from Hospital Ear, Nose and Throat departments in Wales and England. A trained clinician seeks informed consent from parents of children with symptoms attributable to OME for at least 3 months and with confirmed bilateral hearing loss at study entry. Participants are randomised to a course of oral steroid or a matched placebo for one week. Outcomes include audiometry, tympanometry and otoscopy assessments, symptoms, adverse effects, functional health status, quality of life, resource use and cost effectiveness. Participants are followed up at 5 weeks, and at 6 and 12 months after the day of randomisation. The primary outcome is audiometry-confirmed satisfactory hearing at 5 weeks. Discussion There is an important evidence gap regarding clinical and cost effectiveness of short courses of oral steroid treatment for OME. Identifying an effective, safe, non-surgical intervention for OME in children for use in primary care would be of great benefit to children, their families and the NHS

    Mie scattering from optically levitated mixed sulfuric acid-silica core- shell aerosols: confirmation of core-shell morphology for atmospheric science

    Sulfuric acid is shown to form a core–shell particle on a micron-sized, optically-trapped spherical silica bead. The refractive indices of the silica and sulfuric acid, along with the shell thickness and bead radius were determined by reproducing Mie scattered optical white light as a function of wavelength in Mie spectroscopy. Micron-sized silica aerosols (silica beads were used as a proxy for atmospheric silica minerals) were levitated in a mist of sulfuric acid particles; continuous collection of Mie spectra throughout the collision of sulfuric acid aerosols with the optically trapped silica aerosol demonstrated that the resulting aerosol particle had a core–shell morphology. Contrastingly, the collision of aqueous sulfuric acid aerosols with optically trapped polystyrene aerosol resulted in a partially coated system. The light scattering from the optically levitated aerosols was successfully modelled to determine the diameter of the core aerosol (±0.003 μm), the shell thickness (±0.0003 μm) and the refractive index (±0.007). The experiment demonstrated that the presence of a thin film rapidly changed the light scattering of the original aerosol. When a 1.964 μm diameter silica aerosol was covered with a film of sulfuric acid 0.287 μm thick, the wavelength dependent Mie peak positions resembled sulfuric acid. Thus mineral aerosol advected into the stratosphere would likely be coated with sulfuric acid, with a core–shell morphology, and its light scattering properties would be effectively indistinguishable from a homogenous sulfuric acid aerosol if the film thickness was greater than a few 100 s of nm for UV-visible wavelengths
