Sharp Instability Estimates for Bidisperse Convection with Local Thermal Non-equilibrium

    Get PDF
We analyse a theory for thermal convection in a Darcy porous material where the skeletal structure is one with macropores, but also cracks or fissures, giving rise to a series of micropores. This is thus thermal convection in a bidisperse, or double porosity, porous body. The theory allows for non-equilibrium thermal conditions in that the temperature of the solid skeleton is allowed to be different from that of the fluid in the macro- or micropores. The model does, however, allow for independent velocities and pressures of the fluid in the macro- and micropores. The threshold for linear instability is shown to be the same as that for global nonlinear stability. This is a key result because it shows that one may employ linearized theory to ensure that the key physics of the thermal convection problem has been captured. It is important to realize that this has not been shown for other theories of bidisperse media where the temperatures in the macro- and micropores may be different. An analytical expression is obtained for the critical Rayleigh number and numerical results are presented employing realistic parameters for the physical values which arise

On the exponential decay of the Euler-Bernoulli beam with boundary energy dissipation

    Get PDF
We study the asymptotic behavior of the Euler-Bernoulli beam which is clamped at one end and free at the other end. We apply a boundary control with memory at the free end of the beam and prove that the "exponential decay" of the memory kernel is a necessary and sufficient condition for the exponential decay of the energy.Comment: 13 page

On the asymptotic behavior of the quasi-static problem for a linear viscoelastic fluid

In this paper we study the quasi-static problem for a viscoelastic fluid by means of the concept of minimal state. This implies the use of a different free energy defined in a wider space of data. The existence and uniqueness is proved in this new space and the asymptotic decay for the problem with non vanishing supplies is obtained for a large class of memory kernels, including those presenting an exponential or polynomial decay.Comment: 6 page

Crown condition assessment at the CONECOFOR Permanent Monitoring Plots.

A detailed crown condition assessment is currently being carried out at the CONECOFOR (CONtrollo ECOsistemi FORestali, Control of Forest Ecosystems) plots. The assessment began in 1996, and during the first two years (1996 and 1997) an assessment form based on previous regional experience was used; in 1998 the new official EU form was adopted. The resulting loss of comparability means that only a few indices can be used in the temporal series 1996-1999. Much effort was devoted to Quality Assurance (QA) procedures. The QA program is structured as follows: (i) specific field manuals have been adopted and are continuously updated; (ii) a national training and intercalibration course (NT&IC) is undertaken yearly before beginning the assessment campaign;( iii) field checks are carried out yearly on a large number of plots. The results of the QA program have shown that for several indices the quality objectives were not reached, but the quality of the data is improving with time. To express the change in crown conditions in each area, a complex index (CCI = Crown Condition Index) was adopted. This index is the result of the sum of the relativized values of all the common indices used during the four years. The following parameters were used: transparency, ramification type, leaf colour alteration extension, leaf damage extension, alteration of leaf distension extension. The range within which the CCI fluctuates was evaluated taking into account all the observations carried out at a given plot throughout the years. The number of cases over a given threshold (outliers) was calculated for each year. The threshold for outliers was calculated as the median value plus 2 times the range of the interquartile value. All individual cases exceeding this value are considered outliers. The results are presented for all the areas in which the data set is complete for the four years. The yearly fluctuations are discussed and related to possible causes

Thermodynamics of non-local materials: extra fluxes and internal powers

The most usual formulation of the Laws of Thermodynamics turns out to be suitable for local or simple materials, while for non-local systems there are two different ways: either modify this usual formulation by introducing suitable extra fluxes or express the Laws of Thermodynamics in terms of internal powers directly, as we propose in this paper. The first choice is subject to the criticism that the vector fluxes must be introduced a posteriori in order to obtain the compatibility with the Laws of Thermodynamics. On the contrary, the formulation in terms of internal powers is more general, because it is a priori defined on the basis of the constitutive equations. Besides it allows to highlight, without ambiguity, the contribution of the internal powers in the variation of the thermodynamic potentials. Finally, in this paper, we consider some examples of non-local materials and derive the proper expressions of their internal powers from the power balance laws.Comment: 16 pages, in press on Continuum Mechanics and Thermodynamic

Global and exponential attractors for a Ginzburg-Landau model of superfluidity

The long-time behavior of the solutions for a non-isothermal model in superfluidity is investigated. The model describes the transition between the normal and the superfluid phase in liquid 4He by means of a non-linear differential system, where the concentration of the superfluid phase satisfies a non-isothermal Ginzburg-Landau equation. This system, which turns out to be consistent with thermodynamical principles and whose well-posedness has been recently proved, has been shown to admit a Lyapunov functional. This allows to prove existence of the global attractor which consists of the unstable manifold of the stationary solutions. Finally, by exploiting recent techniques of semigroups theory, we prove the existence of an exponential attractor of finite fractal dimension which contains the global attractor.Comment: 39 page
