COMPLEX SENTENCES USED IN ENGLISH-MAJORED STUDENTS’ ESSAY WRITING: PEDAGOGICAL IMPLICATIONS

    Get PDF
The research investigates the use of complex sentences in students’ essay writing, exploring pedagogical implications for teachers to enhance students’ writing proficiency. 212 essays were collected from English-majored students in the last semester for essay learning at Can Tho University, but only 162 essays were qualified for analysis, equivalent to the number of essays in the corpus by Truong & Do (2021). Their complex sentence structures were analyzed and compared with the corpus to identify similarities and differences in the use of complex sentence structures. The findings of this research suggest that there are clear patterns in the types and frequency of complex sentences used by students, which may have implications for the design of the curriculum as well as the teaching and learning of writing essays. Implications for classroom practice and future research directions are discussed.  Article visualizations

Cash holding, state ownership and firm value: The case of Vietnam

    Get PDF
Using a sample of 650 listed firms on the Vietnamese stock exchange over the period 2008-2015, we examine the effect of cash holding level on firm value. The results find out the cash holding has an impact on firm value in an inverted U-shaped form. Furthermore, this study investigates whether the state ownership influences firm value. We point out that there is a statistically insignificant positive relationship between state ownership and firm value unless the state ownership’s advantages are utilized. The findings have implications of cash management in state-owned firms. © 2016, Econjournals. All rights reserved

The article focuses on studying music in festivals of Vietnamese people in Thanh Hoa. Through the collected material, the authors have synthesized, explored the cultural aspects of the composition and analyzed the music. The result of the research is to find out the meaning of music in contributing to the festival\u27s appearance and to find out the operating rules and basic characteristics of music. From there, several discussions are given to preserve and promote music in the festival to achieve higher efficiency in life. The research results are the judgments about the culture and music constituting the overall festival, including (1) Meaning of festival organization; (2) Space and time of the festival; (3) Musical genres and performances in festivals; (4) Musical characteristics. The study also identifies appropriate research methods, and musical analysis techniques are also the basis for making objective judgments. This research will serve as the basis for the research, conservation, and promotion of folk music in larger and more comprehensive aspect

Does foreign ownership impact accounting conservatism adoption in Vietnam?

    Get PDF
This study investigates the effects of foreign ownership on accounting conservatism adoption in Vietnam. Although foreign ownership is found to have a positive relationship with accounting conservatism in Korea (An, 2015), there is still no general agreement on it. In this regard, the purpose of this study is to shed more light on the association between foreign ownership and accounting conservatism. Using data from Vietnamese firms listed on stock exchanges, the study finds that in contrast to the findings of An, foreign ownership is negatively associated with accounting conservatism. This result supports the transient hypothesis of foreign ownership, indicating that foreign investors with the low level of ownership do not have significant incentives to oversee managers, thus not influencing financial reporting quality. © 2017 Prague Development Center.Internal Grant Agency of FaME; TBU - The Relationship between Concentration Ownership and Financial Reporting Quality [IGA/FaME/2017/004

Beyond Domain Adaptation: Unseen Domain Encapsulation via Universal Non-volume Preserving Models

Recognition across domains has recently become an active topic in the research community. However, it has been largely overlooked in the problem of recognition in new unseen domains. Under this condition, the delivered deep network models are unable to be updated, adapted or fine-tuned. Therefore, recent deep learning techniques, such as: domain adaptation, feature transferring, and fine-tuning, cannot be applied. This paper presents a novel Universal Non-volume Preserving approach to the problem of domain generalization in the context of deep learning. The proposed method can be easily incorporated with any other ConvNet framework within an end-to-end deep network design to improve the performance. On digit recognition, we benchmark on four popular digit recognition databases, i.e. MNIST, USPS, SVHN and MNIST-M. The proposed method is also experimented on face recognition on Extended Yale-B, CMU-PIE and CMU-MPIE databases and compared against other the state-of-the-art methods. In the problem of pedestrian detection, we empirically observe that the proposed method learns models that improve performance across a priori unknown data distributions

A long range, energy efficient internet of things based drought monitoring system

The climate change and global warning have been appeared as an emerging issue in recent decades. In which, the drought problem has been influenced on economics and life condition in Vietnam. In order to solve this problem, in this paper, we have designed and deployed a long range and energy efficient drought monitoring based on IoT (Internet of Things) for real time applications. After being tested in the real condition, the proposed system has proved its high dependability and effectiveness. The system is promising to become a potential candidate to solve the drought problem in Vietnam

The prestige of tock exchages and corporate cash holding in transition economies: A study on vietnmese listed firms

The main purpose is to examine the relationship between corporate cash holding level and the prestige of the stock exchanges. And the other determinants in the listing requirements impact on cash holding level will be indicated. The paper uses a sample of 577 listed firms excluding the financial institutions on the Vietnamese stock exchange over the period 2007-2015. The results show that the listed firms on the stock exchange with higher prestige hold larger amount of cash reserve and vice versa. The study shows that there is a statistically significant connection between cash holding and the listing requirements such as profitability, dividend and information disclosure. The findings have implications on the cash management of listed firms in the stock exchanges with dissimilar prestige. © Do Thi Thanh Nhan, Ngo Minh Vu, Pham Ha, Drahomíra Pavelková, 2017
