Critical evaluation of Jet-A spray combustion using propane chemical kinetics in gas turbine combustion simulated by KIVA-2
Jet-A spray combustion has been evaluated in gas turbine combustion with the use of propane chemical kinetics as the first approximation for the chemical reactions. Here, the numerical solutions are obtained by using the KIVA-2 computer code. The KIVA-2 code is the most developed of the available multidimensional combustion computer programs for application of the in-cylinder combustion dynamics of internal combustion engines. The released version of KIVA-2 assumes that 12 chemical species are present; the code uses an Arrhenius kinetic-controlled combustion model governed by a four-step global chemical reaction and six equilibrium reactions. Researchers efforts involve the addition of Jet-A thermophysical properties and the implementation of detailed reaction mechanisms for propane oxidation. Three different detailed reaction mechanism models are considered. The first model consists of 131 reactions and 45 species. This is considered as the full mechanism which is developed through the study of chemical kinetics of propane combustion in an enclosed chamber. The full mechanism is evaluated by comparing calculated ignition delay times with available shock tube data. However, these detailed reactions occupy too much computer memory and CPU time for the computation. Therefore, it only serves as a benchmark case by which to evaluate other simplified models. Two possible simplified models were tested in the existing computer code KIVA-2 for the same conditions as used with the full mechanism. One model is obtained through a sensitivity analysis using LSENS, the general kinetics and sensitivity analysis program code of D. A. Bittker and K. Radhakrishnan. This model consists of 45 chemical reactions and 27 species. The other model is based on the work published by C. K. Westbrook and F. L. Dryer
Isogeometric analysis for functionally graded microplates based on modified couple stress theory
Analysis of static bending, free vibration and buckling behaviours of
functionally graded microplates is investigated in this study. The main idea is
to use the isogeometric analysis in associated with novel four-variable refined
plate theory and quasi-3D theory. More importantly, the modified couple stress
theory with only one material length scale parameter is employed to effectively
capture the size-dependent effects within the microplates. Meanwhile, the
quasi-3D theory which is constructed from a novel seventh-order shear
deformation refined plate theory with four unknowns is able to consider both
shear deformations and thickness stretching effect without requiring shear
correction factors. The NURBS-based isogeometric analysis is integrated to
exactly describe the geometry and approximately calculate the unknown fields
with higher-order derivative and continuity requirements. The convergence and
verification show the validity and efficiency of this proposed computational
approach in comparison with those existing in the literature. It is further
applied to study the static bending, free vibration and buckling responses of
rectangular and circular functionally graded microplates with various types of
boundary conditions. A number of investigations are also conducted to
illustrate the effects of the material length scale, material index, and

Determining key research areas for healthier diets and sustainable food systems in Viet Nam
Vietnamese food systems are undergoing rapid transformation, with important implications for human and environmental health and economic development. Poverty has decreased, and diet quality and undernutrition have improved significantly since the end of the Doi Moi reform period (1986-1993) as a result of Viet Nam opening its economy and increasing its regional and global trade. Yet poor diet quality is still contributing the triple burden of malnutrition, with 25 percent stunting among children under age 5, 26 percent and 29 percent of women and children, respectively, anemic, and 21 percent of adults overweight. Agricultural production systems have shifted from predominantly diverse smallholder systems to larger more commercialized and specialized systems, especially for crops, while the ‘meatification’ of the Vietnamese diet is generating serious trade-offs between improved nutrition and sustainability of the Vietnamese food systems. The food processing industry has developed rapidly, together with food imports, resulting in new and processed food products penetrating the food retail outlets, trending towards an increase in the Westernized consumption patterns that are shifting nutrition-related problems towards overweight and obesity and, with it, an increase of non-communicable disease-related health risks. While regulatory policies exist across the food system, these are not systematically implemented, making food safety a major concern for consumers and policy makers alike. Where data exists, it is not easy to aggregate with data from across food system dimensions, making it difficult for Viet Nam to make an informed analysis of current and potential food system trade-offs. In our research, we reviewed existing literature and data, and applied a food systems framework to develop an initial food systems profile for Viet Nam and to identify a comprehensive set a of research questions to fill current data gaps identified through the review. Insights on these would provide the comprehensive evidence needed to inform policy makers on how to develop new food systems policies for Viet Nam, and further refine and improve existing policies to achieve better quality diets and more sustainable food systems in Viet Nam. Based on these, we then engaged with stakeholders to develop research priorities in the Viet Nam context and identified 25 priority research questions. This paper aims to stimulate such reflections by clearly outlining key areas for research, government policy, and development programs on priority investment to build the evidence base around inclusive food systems interventions that aim to result in healthier diets and more sustainable food systems for Viet Nam
Anomalous Hall Effect of Calcium-doped Lanthanum Cobaltite Films
The Hall resistivity, magnetoresistance, and magnetization of
La_{1-x}Ca_{x}CoO_{3} epitaxial films with x between 0.25 and 0.4 grown on
lanthanum aluminate were measured in fields up to 7 T. The x=1/3 film, shows a
reentrant metal insulator transition. Below 100 K, the x=1/3 and 0.4 films have
significant coercivity which increases with decreasing temperature. At low
temperature the Hall resistivity remains large and essentially field
independent in these films, except for a sign change at the coercive field that
is more abrupt than the switching of the magnetization. A unique
magnetoresistance behavior accompanies this effect. These results are discussed
in terms of a percolation picture and the mixed spin state model for this
system. We propose that the low-temperature Hall effect is caused by
spin-polarized carriers scattering off of orbital disorder in the spin-ordered

Effect of vane twist on the performance of dome swirlers for gas turbine airblast atomizers
For advanced gas turbine engines, two combustor systems, the lean premixed/prevaporized (LPP) and the rich burn/quick quench/lean burn (RQL) offer great potential for reducing NO(x) emissions. An important consideration for either concept is the development of an advanced fuel injection system that will provide a stable, efficient, and very uniform combustion system over a wide operating range. High-shear airblast fuel injectors for gas turbine combustors have exhibited superior atomization and mixing compared with pressure-atomizing fuel injectors. This improved mixing has lowered NO(x) emissions and the pattern factor, and has enabled combustors to alternate fuels while maintaining a stable, efficient combustion system. The performance of high-shear airblast fuel injectors is highly dependent on the design of the dome swirl vanes. The type of swirl vanes most widely used in gas turbine combustors are usually flat for ease of manufacture, but vanes with curvature will, in general, give superior aerodynamic performance. The design and performance of high-turning, low-loss curved dome swirl vanes with twist along the span are investigated. The twist induces a secondary vortex flow pattern which will improve the atomization of the fuel, thereby producing a more uniform fuel-air distribution. This uniform distribution will increase combustion efficiency while lowering NO(x) emissions. A systematic swirl vane design system is presented based on one-, two-, and three-dimensional flowfield calculations, with variations in vane-turning angle, rate of turning, vane solidity, and vane twist as design parameters
Jet Fragmentation in Vacuum and Medium with gamma-hadron Correlations in PHENIX
Jet fragmentation in p+p and Au+Au collisions is studied via back-to-back
correlations of direct photons and charged hadrons. The direct photon
correlations are obtained by statical subtraction of the background from decay
photons. Results on the nuclear modification to the associated charged hadron
yields are reviewed. Further studies of jet fragmentation in p+p using isolated
direct photons are also presented. A kT-smeared LO pQCD calculation is used to
interpret the data. The sensitivity of the data to the underlying fragmentation
function is tested and the results are found to be compatible with expectations
