Vietnam reported its first known case of COVID-19 on 23 January 2020. As of 19 May, the country had 324 confirmed cases, with 263 recoveries and no deaths. In Vietnam, COVID-19 presents a range of contextual challenges including high numbers of migrant workers, high numbers of employees in the garment industry, many people working in the informal sector, and linguistically and culturally diverse ethnic minorities. The impacts of COVID-19 on vulnerable groups, such as migrant workers, informal workers, garment factory workers, and ethnic minorities are further marginalising these groups, exacerbating poverty and inequality and increasing their exposure to other social, economic and protection risks. Women in Vietnam have historically been underrepresented in public decision-making processes, a trend that is reflected in high-level decision-making structures on COVID-19. This means that even as women are disproportionately affected by the crisis, they have less say in how their country should respond to it

    Get PDF
In this paper, the finite element for cohesive crack for quasi-brittle materials is constructed by the displacement discontinuities in the element. The algorithm of construction and procedures for involving this finite element into code Cast3M are presented. The numerical calculations in fracture mechanics are presented to demonstrate the benefits of the proposed implementation

Impact of HIV/Aids on Child Mortality before the Highly Active Antiretroviral Therapy Era: A Study in Pointe-Noire, Republic of Congo

    Get PDF
Few studies have documented the contribution of HIV/AIDS to mortality among children under 15 years. From June 30 to October 19, 2001, all child deaths (n = 588) registered to the morgue and/or hospitals of the city of Pointe-Noire, Congo, were investigated using a combined approach including an interview of relatives and postmortem clinical and biological HIV diagnosis. Twenty-one percent of children were HIV positive, while 10.5% of deaths were attributed to AIDS. The most common causes of death in HIV-infected children were pneumonia (30%), pyrexia (22%), diarrhoea (16%) and wasting syndrome (16%). Infant mortality rate was estimated 6.3 times higher in children born to HIV-infected mothers compared to HIV-uninfected mothers. This study provides a direct measure of HIV/AIDS as impact on child mortality using a rapid and reliable method. A significant number of deaths could be prevented if HIV infection was diagnosed earlier and infants were provided with antiretroviral treatments

This study aimed to determine the effect of a commercial diet's protein level on the fry-to-fingerling stage. Thirty days-old fries having the initial length and weight of 18.25 ± 0.15 mm fish-1 and 0.036 ± 0.50 g fish-1 respectively have been used in this study. Diet having three protein levels i.e. 30% (trial 1 as control), 35% (trial 2), 40% (trial 3), and 45% (trial 4), respectively, have been used to evaluate the effect of protein, and each trial has been repeated three times. During the study, stocking density was allocated to 1000 fish per composite tank with a volume of 1 m3. After 30 days of rearing, the weight of fingerlings in trial 1 reached up to 1.50 ± 0.02 g fish-1 and it was recorded as 1.52 ± 0.01g for trial 2, these two were lower than that of trials 3 and 4, where fingerling weight was reported 1.69 ± 0.01 and 1.58g fish-1 respectively and obtained the best weight compared to others. The length of fingerlings at the end of the experimental period was also changed in different trials and it was recorded 47.12; 46.92; 50.97; and 48.89 mm fish-1 for trail 1, 2, 3, and 4 respectively, among the tested combinations lower fingerlings length was recorded for trial 2 (35% CP), but it is not significantly different for trial 1 and 2 and a significant difference (P < 0.05) was reported for trail 2, 3, and 4. The survival rate of fingerlings ranged from 67.27 to 72.33%. Meanwhile, the herd distribution coefficient variation (CVW) in the treatment using 40% protein (trial 3) was the highest at 72.33% (p < 0.05). The results of the study can be concluded that the level of protein has a significant effect on the various growth parameters of fingerlings

Impact of antiretroviral treatment on height evolution of HIV infected children

International audienceBackground: Antiretroviral treatment (ART) has been shown to have a beneficial effect on the weight evolution but its effect on height remains unclear. We described patterns of height evolution and identified predictors of catch-up growth in HIV-infected children on ART.Methods: To describe the height evolution from birth to adulthood, we developed a nonlinear mixed effect model using data from perinatally HIV-infected children who initiated ART from 1999 to 2013 in a prospective cohort study in Thailand. The main covariates of interest were: sex, ART regimen (dual nucleoside reverse-transcriptase inhibitor, non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NNRTI)-, or protease inhibitor (PI)-based), baseline CD4 percentage, HIV-RNA load and CDC HIV Classification stage and occurrence of AIDS-defining events. Results: A total 477 children (43% boys) contributed 18,596 height measurements over a median duration of 6.3 years on ART (interquartile range, 3.0 to 8.3). At ART initiation, median age was 6.2 years (1.8 to 9.6), 16% of children were underweight (weight-for-age z-score < − 2), 49% presented stunting (height-for-age z-score < − 2), and 7% wasting (weight-for-height z-score < − 2). The most frequent regimen at ART initiation was NNRTI-based (79%). A model with 4 components, birth length and 3 exponential functions of age accounting for the 3 growth phases was developed and show that the height-growth velocity was inversely associated with the age at ART initiation, the adult height was significantly lower in those who had experienced at least one AIDS-defining event while, as expected, the model found that adult height in females was lower than in males. Age at ART initiation, type of ART regimen, CDC stage, CD4 percentages, and HIV-RNA load were not associated with the final height. Conclusions: he younger the children at ART initiation, the greater the effect on height-growth velocity, supporting the World Health Organization’s recommendation to start ART as early as possible. However, final adult height was not linked to the age at ART initiation

Background: Early infant diagnosis of HIV is crucial for timely initiation of antiretroviral therapy (ART) in infected children who are at high risk of mortality. Early infant diagnosis with dried blood spot testing was provided by the National AIDS Programme in Thailand from 2007. We report ART initiation and vital status in children with HIV after 7 years of rollout in Thailand. / Methods: Dried blood spot samples were collected from HIV-exposed children in hospitals in Thailand and mailed to the Faculty of Associated Medical Sciences, Chiang Mai University, where HIV DNA was assessed with real-time PCR to establish HIV infection. We linked data from children with an HIV infection to the National AIDS Programme database to ascertain ART and vital status. / Findings: Between April 5, 2007, and Oct 1, 2014, 16 046 dried blood spot samples were sent from 8859 children in 364 hospitals in Thailand. Median age at first dried blood spot test was 2·1 (IQR 1·8–2·5) months. Of 7174 (81%) children with two or more samples, 223 (3%) were HIV positive (including five unconfirmed). Of 1685 (19%) children with one sample, 70 (4%) were unconfirmed positive. Of 293 (3%) children who were HIV positive, 220 (75%) registered for HIV care and 170 (58%) initiated ART. Median age at ART initiation decreased from 14·2 months (IQR 10·2–25·6) in 2007 to 6·1 months (4·2–9·2) in 2013, and the number of children initiating ART aged younger than 1 year increased from five (33%) of 15 children initiating ART in 2007 to ten (83%) of 12 initiating ART in 2013. 15 (9%) of 170 children who initiated ART died and 16 (32%) of 50 who had no ART record died. / Interpretation: Early infant diagnosis with dried blood spot testing had high uptake in primary care settings. Further improvement of linkage to HIV care is needed to ensure timely treatment of all children with an HIV infection
