    Population-level approaches to universal health coverage in resource-poor settings: Lessons from tobacco control policy in Vietnam

    Population-based health promotion and disease prevention approaches are essential elements in achieving universal health coverage; yet they frequently do not appear on national policy agendas. This paper suggests that resource-poor countries should take greater advantage of such approaches to reach all segments of the population to positively affect health outcomes and equity, especially considering the epidemic of chronic non-communicable diseases and associated modifiable risk factors. Tobacco control policy development and implementation in Vietnam provides a case study to discuss opportunities and challenges associated with such strategies

    The territory of the northeast of Vietnam is the most important region of the country in terms of metallogeny, especially for precious and non-ferrous metals. A large number of Au, Pb, Zn, Sb, Hg, and Ni-Cu-PGE deposits are located in this territory, regionally confined to the southwestern margin of the South China Block. This region is located northeast of the Red River Shear Zone, which marks the boundary between two large geoblocks. The Song Hien rift basin is an important metallogenic region of northeastern Vietnam and extends for more than 200 km in the NW-SE direction, up to the state border with China. On the adjacent territory of China, the Song Hien structure passes into the Youjiang rift basin, where a large number of gold deposits attributed to the Carlin formation are also known. The Suoi Cun deposit is located to the east and southeast of the Cao Bang city and the large Cu-Ni-Pt-bearing mafic-ultramafic Suoi Cun massif. The mineralization is hosted by the rhyolites of the Triassic Song Hien formation and represents by hydrothermal low-temperature veins and crushing zones with chalcedonic quartz. Ore minerals in quartz-vein and metasomatically altered rhyolites are represented by pyrite, marcasite, and arsenopyrite. The amount of ore minerals is not constant and varies in a wide range from poor dissemination to 30 %. Ore zones have a zonal structure. The outer zones, 50–100 meters wide, are represented by altered rhyolites. The central part of the ore bodies is ore breccia, the fragments of which are represented by both massive pyrite aggregates and differently altered and mineralized rhyolites. The cement of the breccias is different and depends on the spatial position in the section of the ore body. The outer part of the inner mineralized zone is cemented by quartz and, more rarely, by carbonate. According to the results of Ar-Ar dating, the calculated age of hydrothermal sericite from the axial part of the mineralized zone was 218 ± 1 Ma. The main geological and mineral characteristics of the Suoi Cun deposit include: (1) the confinement of mineralization to zones of crushing and multiple breccia formation in the rhyolites of the Song Hien Formation; (2) wide development of chalcedonic quartz and marcasite, indicating low temperatures of mineral formation; (3) chloritization, sericitization, silicification, and sulfidization as the dominant types of metasomatic transformation; (4) mineral association represented by pyrite, marcasite, arsenopyrite, and stibnite; (5) absence of native gold in ores, positive correlation between gold and Carlin group elements (As, Sb, Hg, Tl); (6) relation of mineral formation with regional tectonic events, lack of genetic relationship with magmatism. Using the critical characteristics for Carlin type deposits, we conclude that the Suoi Cun deposit is represented by this formation

    Progress Toward a Human CD4/CCR5 Transgenic Rat Model for De Novo Infection by Human Immunodeficiency Virus Type 1

    The development of a permissive small animal model for the study of human immunodeficiency virus type (HIV)-1 pathogenesis and the testing of antiviral strategies has been hampered by the inability of HIV-1 to infect primary rodent cells productively. In this study, we explored transgenic rats expressing the HIV-1 receptor complex as a susceptible host. Rats transgenic for human CD4 (hCD4) and the human chemokine receptor CCR5 (hCCR5) were generated that express the transgenes in CD4+ T lymphocytes, macrophages, and microglia. In ex vivo cultures, CD4+ T lymphocytes, macrophages, and microglia from hCD4/hCCR5 transgenic rats were highly susceptible to infection by HIV-1 R5 viruses leading to expression of abundant levels of early HIV-1 gene products comparable to those found in human reference cultures. Primary rat macrophages and microglia, but not lymphocytes, from double-transgenic rats could be productively infected by various recombinant and primary R5 strains of HIV-1. Moreover, after systemic challenge with HIV-1, lymphatic organs from hCD4/hCCR5 transgenic rats contained episomal 2–long terminal repeat (LTR) circles, integrated provirus, and early viral gene products, demonstrating susceptibility to HIV-1 in vivo. Transgenic rats also displayed a low-level plasma viremia early in infection. Thus, transgenic rats expressing the appropriate human receptor complex are promising candidates for a small animal model of HIV-1 infection

    Evaluation of intracranial stenting in a simulated training and assessment environment for neuroendovascular procedures

    PurposeGiven the inherent complexity of neurointerventional procedures and the associated risks of ionizing radiation exposure, it is crucial to prioritize ongoing training and improve safety protocols. The aim of this study is to assess a training and evaluation in-vitro environment using a vascular model of M1 stenosis, within a clinical angiography suite, without relying on animal models or X-ray radiation.Materials and methodsUsing a transparent model replicating M1 stenosis, we conducted intracranial stenting procedures with four different setups (Gateway & Wingspan, Gateway & Enterprise, Neurospeed & Acclino, and Pharos Vitesse). A video camera was integrated with the angiography system’s monitor for real-time visualization, while a foot switch was employed to simulate live fluoroscopy. Three neuroradiologists with varying levels of expertise performed each procedure for three times. The total duration of fluoroscopy as well as the time from passing the stenosis with the wire to completion of the procedure were recorded using a dedicated software designed for this experimental setup.ResultsCompared to the Gateway & Wingspan procedure, the total fluoroscopy time reduced significantly with the Gateway & Enterprise, Neurospeed & Acclino, and Pharos Vitesse procedures by 51.56 s, 111.33 s, and 144.89 s, respectively (p < 0.001). Additionally, physicians with under 2 years and over 5 years of experience reduced FT by 62.83 s and 106.42 s, respectively, (p < 0.001), compared to a novice physician. Similar trends were noted for the time of wire distal to stenosis, with significant reductions for Neurospeed & Acclino and Pharos Vitesse compared to both Gateway & Wingspan as well as Gateway & Enterprise (all p < 0.001).ConclusionProcedures requiring wire exchange maneuvers exhibited nearly twice the fluoroscopy time in comparison to balloon-mounted stenting or stent-placement via PTA balloon catheters. The more experienced neuroradiologist demonstrated significantly quicker performance in line with expectations in a real-life clinical setting, when compared to the less experienced interventionalist. This in-vitro setup allowed the evaluation of alternative technical approaches and differences in experience of operators without the use of animal models or X-ray. The setup combines advantages of simulators and silicone vessel models in a realistic working environment

    Polyphasic evaluation and cytotoxic investigation of isolated cyanobacteria with an emphasis on potent activities of a Scytonema strain

The names of the repository/repositories and accession number(s) can be found in the article/supplementary material.Cyanobacteria are phototrophic organisms widely found in most types of natural habitats in the tropical regions of the world. In this study, we isolated and identified cyanobacterial strains from paddy soil in Hanoi (Vietnam) and investigated their cytotoxic activities. Five isolated cyanobacterial strains showed distinctive profiles of gene sequences (rRNA 16S and rbcL), phylogenetic placements, and morphological characteristics. Based on the polyphasic evaluation, they were classified as Scytonema bilaspurense NK13, Hapalosiphon welwitschii MD2411, Aulosira sp. XN1103, Desikacharya sp. NS2000, and Desmonostoc sp. NK1813. The cytotoxic screening revealed that the extract of strain Scytonema bilaspurense NK13 exhibited potent cytotoxic activities against four human cell lines of HeLa cells, OVCAR-8 cells, HaCaT cells, and HEK-293T cells, with IC50 values of 3.8, 34.2, 21.6, and 0.6μg/mL, respectively.     A Bibliometric Analysis of the Global Research Trend in Child Maltreatment

    Child maltreatment remains a major health threat globally that requires the understanding of socioeconomic and cultural contexts to craft effective interventions. However, little is known about research agendas globally and the development of knowledge-producing networks in this field of study. This study aims to explore the bibliometric overview on child maltreatment publications to understand their growth from 1916 to 2018. Data from the Web of Science Core Collection were collected in May 2018. Only research articles and reviews written in the English language were included, with no restrictions by publication date. We analyzed publication years, number of papers, journals, authors, keywords and countries, and presented the countries collaboration and co-occurrence keywords analysis. From 1916 to 2018, 47, 090 papers (53.0% in 2010–2018) were published in 9442 journals. Child Abuse & Neglect (2576 papers; 5.5%); Children and Youth Services Review (1130 papers; 2.4%) and Pediatrics (793 papers, 1.7%) published the most papers. The most common research areas were Psychology (16, 049 papers, 34.1%), Family Studies (8225 papers, 17.5%), and Social Work (7367 papers, 15.6%). Among 192 countries with research publications, the most prolific countries were the United States (26, 367 papers), England (4676 papers), Canada (3282 papers) and Australia (2664 papers). We identified 17 authors who had more than 60 scientific items. The most cited papers (with at least 600 citations) were published in 29 journals, headed by the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) (7 papers) and the Lancet (5 papers). This overview of global research in child maltreatment indicated an increasing trend in this topic, with the world’s leading centers located in the Western countries led by the United States. We called for interdisciplinary research approaches to evaluating and intervening on child maltreatment, with a focus on low-middle income countries (LMICs) settings and specific contexts
