Critique of proposed limit to space--time measurement, based on Wigner's clocks and mirrors

    Get PDF
Based on a relation between inertial time intervals and the Riemannian curvature, we show that space--time uncertainty derived by Ng and van Dam implies absurd uncertainties of the Riemannian curvature.Comment: 5 pages, LaTex, field "Author:" correcte

    Transverse Bragg-reflector injection lasers

    Get PDF
A GaAs-GaAlAs injection laser has been tested that confines light in the lateral dimension (normal to junction plane) by a multilayer Bragg reflector. In the past, light has been confined as a result of the higher-index guiding region and resulting evanescent fields

Hegemonic conceptualizations of empowerment in entrepreneurship and their suitability for collective contexts

    Get PDF
The relationship between empowerment and entrepreneurship in collective societies is, in our view, insufficiently examined. Accepted definitions of empowerment and the assumptions underlying programs and research designs based on them result in outcomes that self-fulfil and, as a result, disappoint. Several issues are prevalent: the empowerment potential of programs is overestimated and the dominant view of what constitutes an ‘empowered self’ does not go deep enough to explore, and reframe, the self and its relationship to agency—two issues at the core of empowerment definitions and formulations. In this conceptual article, we examine the entrepreneurship and empowerment literature to suggest ways forward for the future health and relevance of the subject area. We highlight a serious methodological and perceptual issue within the literature, which offers many opportunities for theory development in the field

On the Stability and the Approximation of Branching Distribution Flows, with Applications to Nonlinear Multiple Target Filtering

    Get PDF
We analyse the exponential stability properties of a class of measure-valued equations arising in nonlinear multi-target filtering problems. We also prove the uniform convergence properties w.r.t. the time parameter of a rather general class of stochastic filtering algorithms, including sequential Monte Carlo type models and mean eld particle interpretation models. We illustrate these results in the context of the Bernoulli and the Probability Hypothesis Density filter, yielding what seems to be the first results of this kind in this subject

Topological spin excitations of Heisenberg antiferromagnets in two dimensions

In this paper we discuss the construction and the dynamics of vortex-like topological spin excitations in the Schwinger-boson description of Heisenberg antiferromagnets in two dimensions. The topological spin excitations are Dirac fermions (with gap) when spin value SS is a half-integer. Experimental and theoretical implications of these excitations are being investigated.Comment: Latex file, no figur

Effect of dead space on avalanche speed

    Get PDF
The effects of dead space (the minimum distance travelled by a carrier before acquiring enough energy to impact ionize) on the current impulse response and bandwidth of an avalanche multiplication process are obtained from a numerical model that maintains a constant carrier velocity but allows for a random distribution of impact ionization path lengths. The results show that the main mechanism responsible for the increase in response time with dead space is the increase in the number of carrier groups, which qualitatively describes the length of multiplication chains. When the dead space is negligible, the bandwidth follows the behavior predicted by Emmons but decreases as dead space increase

An invariant approach to dynamical fuzzy spaces with a three-index variable

A dynamical fuzzy space might be described by a three-index variable C_{ab}^c, which determines the algebraic relations f_a f_b =C_{ab}^c f_c among the functions f_a on the fuzzy space. A fuzzy analogue of the general coordinate transformation would be given by the general linear transformation on f_a. I study equations for the three-index variable invariant under the general linear transformation, and show that the solutions can be generally constructed from the invariant tensors of Lie groups. As specific examples, I study SO(3) symmetric solutions, and discuss the construction of a scalar field theory on a fuzzy two-sphere within this framework.Comment: Typos corrected, 12 pages, 8 figures, LaTeX, JHEP clas
