Annotated Bibliography of African American Carillon Music

    Get PDF
The bibliography is arranged into four sections: 1. Original carillon works by African American composers (sorted by composer last name) 2. Arrangements of African American music (by title) 3. Arrangements of Scott Joplin’s works (by title) 4. Original carillon works honoring African American history, culture, and identity (by composer last name)This comprehensive annotated bibliography lists carillon scores by African American composers and/or based on African American music. While most of the items are published, a few are unpublished but in informal circulation, or are pending publication. Carillonneurs are invited to use this resource to identify music to perform and teach. Despite the length of this bibliography, there is currently only one published original carillon work by an African American composer. The vast majority of items are arrangements by White composers, and most of these arrangements are of spirituals, revealing an essentialization of African American music that omits major genres (ex. jazz, soul, and rhythm and blues, to name a few) and freezes musical development in the nineteenth century. These imbalances point to a serious need for the commissioning of original works by Black composers.Peer Reviewedhttps://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/146525/5/Ng Af-Am Bibliography 02.20.20.pdfhttps://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/146525/4/GCNA Bulletin 2019 - Ng Af Am Biblio.pdfhttps://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/146525/1/Ng Af-Am Bibliography 11.15.18.pdfhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/146525/7/Ng Af-Am bibliography 3rd ed 02-2021.pdfDescription of Ng Af-Am Bibliography 02.20.20.pdf : Updated 02/20/2020Description of GCNA Bulletin 2019 - Ng Af Am Biblio.pdf : Published VersionDescription of Ng Af-Am Bibliography 11.15.18.pdf : Pre-prin

Closing Learning Gaps with Differentiated Math Lessons

    Get PDF
In a multiethnic mathematics classroom, there are many different students with unique learning backgrounds and academic needs. Often in a public school, it is difficult to address individual needs with personalized attention and instruction in a classroom setting. At San Francisco International High School, a public school that serves immigrant students, teachers are often faced with the challenge of assessing all their students’ learning levels, teaching required content, and motivating each student. This daunting and seemingly impossible task might be possible with the aid of technology. This action research project studied the effects of using an online learning platform to differentiate mathematics instruction. Lessons were intended to strengthen mathematics skills of those with learning gaps and further the knowledge of those who needed to be challenged with new content. With different levels of lessons, students focused only on lessons that they needed and were able to test out of lessons in which they were already competent. The action research method was used to make observations and necessary modifications to improve the subsequent week’s lessons. Quantitative data from the teacher observation tools and module quizzes and qualitative data from the teacher journal and student reflections were collected to assess the effectiveness of these lesson based on the areas of learning mathematics, engagement, and confidence level. The research results found that differentiated learning had positive results for students’ mathematics learning, engagement, and confidence level. For future lessons, differentiation can be enhanced through incorporation of other structures and teaching strategies

    Get PDF
This open-access international bibliography lists published and unpublished original carillon works by over a hundred women, transgender, and nonbinary composers. The composers’ birth years range from 1858 to the twenty-first century, the musical styles range from lyrical to avant-garde, and the formats range from solo to ensemble to electroacoustic. The listings are followed by two appendices. Appendix A lists arrangements and transcriptions, written for carillon, of music by women composed for other instruments or voice. Appendix B comprises an online streaming playlist of music by women carillon composers, with links to free audio and video across the web. We outline our research findings in the introduction, supplemented by charts and tables for ease of visualizing the data we gathered on gender inequity at the national and international carillon conference level

These imbalances point to a serious need for the commissioning of original works by Black composers, and particularly by Black women
