The evolution of glutathione metabolism in phototrophic microorganisms
The low molecular weight thiol composition of a variety of phototropic microorganisms is examined in order to ascertain how evolution of glutathione (GSH) production is related to the evolution of oxygenic photosynthesis. Cells were extracted in the presence of monobromobimane (mBBr) to convert thiols (RSH) to fluorescent derivatives (RSmB) which were analyzed by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Significant levels of GSH were not found in green sulfur bacteria. Substantial levels were present in purple bacteria, cyanobacteria, and eukaryotic algae. Other thiols measured included cysteine, gamma-glutamylcysteine, thiosulfate, coenzyme A, and sulfide. Many of the organisms also exhibited a marked ability to reduce mBBr to syn-(methyl,methyl)bimane, an ability which was quenched by treatment with 2-pyridyl disulfide or 5,5 prime-bisdithio - (2-nitrobenzoic acid) prior to reaction with mBBr. These observations indicate the presence of a reducing system capable of electron transfer to mBBr and reduction of reactive disulfides. The distribution of GSH in phototropic eubacteria indicates that GSH synthesis evolved at or around the time that oxygenic photosynthesis evolved
A simple derivation of Kepler's laws without solving differential equations
Proceeding like Newton with a discrete time approach of motion and a
geometrical representation of velocity and acceleration, we obtain Kepler's
laws without solving differential equations. The difficult part of Newton's
work, when it calls for non trivial properties of ellipses, is avoided by the
introduction of polar coordinates. Then a simple reconsideration of Newton's
figure naturally leads to en explicit expression of the velocity and to the
equation of the trajectory. This derivation, which can be fully apprehended by
beginners at university (or even before) can be considered as a first
application of mechanical concepts to a physical problem of great historical
and pedagogical interest

Scattering Wave Functions at Bound State Poles
The normalisation relation between the bound and scattering S-state wave
functions, extrapolated to the bound state pole, is derived from the
Schroedinger equation. It is shown that, unlike previous work, the result does
not depend on the details of the potential through the corresponding Jost
function but is given uniquely in terms of the binding energy. The
generalisations to higher partial waves and one-dimensional scattering are

mHealth: providing a mindfulness app for women with chronic pelvic pain in gynaecology outpatient clinics: qualitative data analysis of user experience and lessons learnt
OBJECTIVES: To determine whether a pre-existing smartphone app to teach mindfulness meditation is acceptable to women with chronic pelvic pain (CPP) and can be integrated into clinical practice within the National Health Service (NHS) CPP pathways, and to inform the design of a potential randomised clinical trial.
DESIGN: A prestudy patient and public involvement (PPI) group to collect feedback on the acceptability of the existing app and study design was followed by a three-arm randomised feasibility trial. In addition, we undertook interviews and focus groups with patients and staff to explore app usability and acceptability. We also obtained participant comments on the research process, such as acceptability of the study questionnaires.
SETTING: Two gynaecology clinics within Barts Health NHS, London, UK.
PARTICIPANTS: Patients with CPP lasting ≥6 months with access to smartphone or personal computer and understanding of basic English.
INTERVENTION: The intervention was mindfulness meditation content plus additional pain module delivered by a smartphone app. Active controls received muscle relaxation content from the same app. Passive (waiting list) controls received usual care.
MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Themes on user feedback, app usability and integration, and reasons for using/not using the app.
RESULTS: The use of the app was low in both active groups. Patients in the prestudy PPI group, all volunteers, were enthusiastic about the app (convenience, content, portability, flexibility, ease of use). Women contributing to the interview or focus group data (n=14), from a 'real world' clinic (some not regular app users), were less positive, citing as barriers lack of opportunities/motivation to use the app and lack of familiarity and capabilities with technology. Staff (n=7) were concerned about the potential need for extra support for them and for the patients, and considered the app needed organisational backing and peer acceptance.
CONCLUSION: The opinions of prestudy PPI volunteers meeting in their private time may not represent those of patients recruited at a routine clinic appointment. It may be more successful to codesign/codevelop an app with typical users than to adapt existing apps for use in real-world clinical populations.

Effect of partially-screened nuclei on fast-electron dynamics
We analyze the dynamics of fast electrons in plasmas containing partially
ionized impurity atoms, where the screening effect of bound electrons must be
included. We derive analytical expressions for the deflection and slowing-down
frequencies, and show that they are increased significantly compared to the
results obtained with complete screening, already at sub-relativistic electron
energies. Furthermore, we show that the modifications to the deflection and
slowing down frequencies are of equal importance in describing the runaway
current evolution. Our results greatly affect fast-electron dynamics and have
important implications, e.g. for the efficacy of mitigation strategies for
runaway electrons in tokamak devices, and energy loss during relativistic
