    This paper presents a brief summary of several wind-tunnel investigations conducted at the Langley Research Center of the NASA to study the aerodynamic and stability and control characteristics of several VTOL aircraft configurations powered by four tilting ducted propellers arranged in tandem pairs. Specifically the two rear ducts could be mounted close alongside the upper rear portion of the fuselage with small wing panels attached to the outboard side of the ducts or could be mounted outboard on the tips of a small wing located high on the rear portion of the fuselage. The two front ducts were always mounted close inboard on the forward part of the fuselage and could be mounted either in a high or low position on the fuselage. The results of the investigation indicated that aircraft of this type could have acceptable aerodynamic and static longitudinal and lateral stability and control characteristics in both transition and normal cruise flight except for the possible qualification that the lateral force due to sideslip is abnormally high and might cause the aircraft to be too sensitive to side gusts

    Tests were made in the Langley full-scale tunnel and included a study of the stability and control characteristics of delta- and swept-wing configurations from hovering through the transition to normal forward flight. Static force tests were also conducted to aid in the analysis of the flight tests. With conventional artificial rate stabilization, very smooth transitions could be made consistently with relatively little difficulty. Because of the lower apparent damping and a tendency to diverge in yaw, however, the swept-wing configuration was considered to be much more difficult to fly than the delta-wing configuration. With rate dampers off, both configurations were very difficult to control and the control power needed for satisfactory flights was substantially higher than with the rate dampers operating

    Wing-leading-edge modifications included leading-edge droop and slat configurations having full-span, partial-span, or segmented arrangements. Other devices included wing-chord extensions, fences, and leading-edge stall strips. Good correlation was apparent between the results of wind-tunnel data and the results of flight tests, on the basis of autorotational stability criterion, for a wide range of wing-leading-edge modifications

    An investigation was conducted to evaluate the aerodynamic performance, stability, and control characteristics of the Advanced Technology Light Twin Engine airplane (ATLIT). Data were measured over an angle of attack range from -4 deg to 20 deg for various angles of sideslip between -5 deg and 15 deg at Reynolds numbers of 0.0000023 and 0.0000035 for various settings of power and flap deflection. Measurements were also made by means of special thrust torque balances to determine the installed propeller characteristics. Part of the investigation was devoted to drag cleanup of the basic airplane and to the evaluation of the effect of winglets on drag and stability

    Wind-tunnel investigation to determine the low speed yawing stability derivatives of a twin jet fighter model at high angles of attack

    An investigation was conducted to determine the low-speed yawing stability derivatives of a twin-jet fighter airplane model at high angles of attack. Tests were performed in a low-speed tunnel utilizing variable-curvature walls to simulate pure yawing motion. The results of the study showed that at angles of attack below the stall the yawing derivatives were essentially independent of the yawing velocity and sideslip angle. However, at angles of attack above the stall some nonlinear variations were present and the derivatives were strongly dependent upon sideslip angle. The results also showed that the rolling moment due to yawing was primarily due to the wing-fuselage combination, and that at angles of attack below the stall both the vertical and horizontal tails produced significant contributions to the damping in yaw. Additionally, the tests showed that the use of the forced-oscillation data to represent the yawing stability derivatives is questionable, at high angles of attack, due to large effects arising from the acceleration in sideslip derivatives

    Archaeological Soybean (Glycine max) in East Asia: Does Size Matter?

    The recently acquired archaeological record for soybean from Japan, China and Korea is shedding light on the context in which this important economic plant became associated with people and was domesticated. This paper examines archaeological (charred) soybean seed size variation to determine what insight can be gained from a comprehensive comparison of 949 specimens from 22 sites. Seed length alone appears to represent seed size change through time, although the length×width×thickness product has the potential to provide better size change resolution. A widespread early association of small seeded soybean is as old as 9000–8600 cal BP in northern China and 7000 cal BP in Japan. Direct AMS radiocarbon dates on charred soybean seeds indicate selection resulted in large seed sizes in Japan by 5000 cal BP (Middle Jomon) and in Korea by 3000 cal BP (Early Mumun). Soybean seeds recovered in China from the Shang through Han periods are similar in length to the large Korean and Japanese specimens, but the overall size of the large Middle and Late Jomon, Early Mumun through Three Kingdom seeds is significantly larger than any of the Chinese specimens. The archaeological record appears to disconfirm the hypothesis of a single domestication of soybean and supports the view informed by recent phyologenetic research that soybean was domesticated in several locations in East Asia

    The potassic sedimentary rocks in Gale Crater, Mars, as seen by ChemCam on board Curiosity

    The Mars Science Laboratory rover Curiosity encountered potassium-rich clastic sedimentary rocks at two sites in Gale Crater, the waypoints Cooperstown and Kimberley. These rocks include several distinct meters thick sedimentary outcrops ranging from fine sandstone to conglomerate, interpreted to record an ancient fluvial or fluvio-deltaic depositional system. From ChemCam Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) chemical analyses, this suite of sedimentary rocks has an overall mean K2O abundance that is more than 5 times higher than that of the average Martian crust. The combined analysis of ChemCam data with stratigraphic and geographic locations reveals that the mean K2O abundance increases upward through the stratigraphic section. Chemical analyses across each unit can be represented as mixtures of several distinct chemical components, i.e., mineral phases, including K-bearing minerals, mafic silicates, Fe-oxides, and Fe-hydroxide/oxyhydroxides. Possible K-bearing minerals include alkali feldspar (including anorthoclase and sanidine) and K-bearing phyllosilicate such as illite. Mixtures of different source rocks, including a potassium-rich rock located on the rim and walls of Gale Crater, are the likely origin of observed chemical variations within each unit. Physical sorting may have also played a role in the enrichment in K in the Kimberley formation. The occurrence of these potassic sedimentary rocks provides additional evidence for the chemical diversity of the crust exposed at Gale Crater

    Search for the exotic Ξ−−(1860)\Xi^{--}(1860) Resonance in 340GeV/c Σ−\Sigma^--Nucleus Interactions

    We report on a high statistics search for the Ξ−−(1860)\Xi^{--}(1860) resonance in Σ−\Sigma^--nucleus collisions at 340GeV/c. No evidence for this resonance is found in our data sample which contains 676000 Ξ−\Xi^- candidates above background. For the decay channel Ξ−−(1860)→Ξ−π−\Xi^{--}(1860) \to \Xi^-\pi^- and the kinematic range 0.15<xF<<x_F<0.9 we find a 3σ\sigma upper limit for the production cross section of 3.1 and 3.5 μ\mub per nucleon for reactions with carbon and copper, respectively.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, modification of ref. 43 and 4
