Flat (001) surfaces of II-VI semiconductors: A lattice gas model

We present a two-dimensional lattice gas with anisotropic interactions which model the known properties of the surface reconstructions of CdTe and ZnSe. In constrast to an earlier publication [12], the formation of anion dimers is considered. This alters the behaviour of the model considerably. We determine the phase diagram of this model by means of transfer matrix calculations and Monte Carlo simulations. Women's movements and female board representation

Scholars know relatively little about the potential impact of women's movements on gender diversity in the corporate world. We aim to fill this gap in the literature by providing the first empirical analysis of the relationship between women's movements and female representation on boards of directors. Drawing on political process theory, we argue that the strength of a women's movement is positively associated with its ability to increase the number of women on corporate boards. Moreover, we posit that the effect of women's movements on female board representation is moderated by corporate opportunity structures, that is, attributes of firms that make them more or less receptive to social movement activities. Three firm characteristics are particularly relevant in the context of boardroom gender diversity: reputation-seeking behavior, commitment to corporate social responsibility, and political orientation. Using firm-fixed effects models to analyze data on more than 2000 companies from 10 countries over a period of 10 years, we find support for three of our four hypotheses. Modelling (001) surfaces of II-VI semiconductors

First, we present a two-dimensional lattice gas model with anisotropic interactions which explains the experimentally observed transition from a dominant c(2x2) ordering of the CdTe(001) surface to a local (2x1) arrangement of the Cd atoms as an equilibrium phase transition. Its analysis by means of transfer-matrix and Monte Carlo techniques shows that the small energy difference of the competing reconstructions determines to a large extent the nature of the different phases. Then, this lattice gas is extended to a model of a three-dimensional crystal which qualitatively reproduces many of the characteristic features of CdTe which have been observed during sublimation and atomic layer epitaxy.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure

The water vapour radiometer of Paranal: homogeneity of precipitable water vapour from two years of operations

A Low Humidity and Temperature Profiling (LHATPRO) microwave radiometer, manufactured by Radiometer Physics GmbH (RPG),is used to monitor sky conditions over ESO's Paranal observatory in support of VLT science operations. The unit measures several channels across the strong water vapour emission line at 183 GHz, necessary for resolving the low levels of precipitable water vapour (PWV) that are prevalent on Paranal (median similar to 2.4 mm). The instrument consists of a humidity profiler (183-191 GHz),a temperature profiler (51-58 GHz),and an infrared camera (similar to 10 mu m) for cloud detection. We present a statistical analysis of the homogeneity of all-sky PWV using 24 months of PWV observations. The question we tried to address was whether PWV is homogeneous enough across the sky such that service mode observations with the VLT can routinely be conducted with a user-provided constraint for PWV measured at zenith. We find the PWV over Paranal to be remarkably homogeneous across the sky down to 27.5 degrees elevation with a median variation of 0.07 mm (rms). The homogeneity is a function of the absolute PWV but the relative variation is fairly constant at 2 to 3% (rms). Such variations will not be a significant issue for analysis of astronomical data. Users at ESO can specify PWV - measured at zenith - as an ambient constraint in service mode to enable, for instance, very demanding observations in the infrared. We conclude that in general it will not be necessary to add another observing constraint for PWV homogeneity to ensure integrity of observations. For demanding observations requiring very low PWV, where the relative variation is higher, the optimum support could be provided by observing with the LHATPRO in the same line-of-sight simultaneously. Such a mode of operations has already been tested but will have to be justified in terms of scientific gain before implementation can be considered. We plan to extend our analysis of PWV variations covering a larger parameters space for temporal and spatial resolution in the future. Also for climate studies such data sets will be relevant

Diese Arbeit beschäftigt sich mit der Rolle von Differenz und Grenzen bei der Identitätsbildung. Des Weiteren wird untersucht welche Bedeutung Migration, Konfliktwahrnehmung und Heimat in diesem Prozess spielen. Die Beschäftigung mit diesen Fragen fand auf individueller (im Bezug auf die Selbst-Wahrnehmung) und auf kollektiver (Gemeinschaftsbewusstsein) Ebene am Beispiel irischer MigrantInnen in Bristol/England statt. Die verwendete Interviewmethode war das problemzentrierte Interview nach Witzel (1982). In einem Zeitraum von sieben Wochen sprach ich mit sechs irischen MigrantInnen der ersten Generation. Die gewonnenen Daten wurden mit Hilfe des Auswertungsverfahrens nach Schmidt (2007) analysiert. Durch kritische Reflexion von Konzepten und Theorien, in Verbindung mit den Erzählungen meiner InterviewpartnerInnen, entstanden die folgenden Ergebnisse. Identität wird als Konstrukt verstanden. Sie ist dynamisch, kontradiktorisch und multipel. Zentral sind die Themen agency und Kontextabhängigkeit. Auf individueller Ebene wird ein schwaches Identitätskonzept vertreten – das „Andere“ wird als existierend respektiert, Differenzen begründen sich aber nicht wechselseitig. Auf Gemeinschaftsebene wird die Bedeutung von Abgrenzungen anerkannt. Eine ausschließliche Konzentration auf Grenzen würde jedoch zentrale Elemente kollektiver Identität – die Konzentration auf und Identifikation mit einen/m Kern (Erfahrungen, Erinnerungen, Interessen, Werte, Orientierungen) – übersehen. Grenzen sind – wie Identität - wandelbar und verhandelbar. In diesen Prozessen des Aushandelns durch Interaktion spielen Migration, Konflikt und Heimat unterschiedliche Rollen. Alle drei Faktoren haben jedoch Auswirkungen auf das Selbst- und Gruppen-Bewusstsein, wobei Kontext, Fremdwahrnehmung und Macht die individuelle Selbstwahrnehmung und Zugehörigkeiten prägen. Mit ihrem konstruktivistischen Verständnis von Identität, in Verbindung mit einer anthropologischen Perspektive auf Migration, sieht sich die Arbeit als Beitrag zur anthropologischen Debatte um Identität

„Radio ist schön.“: Radio machen mit Kindern, die viele verschiedene Sprachen sprechen, bei Radio Orange, dem Freien Radio Wien

Die Volksschul-Pädagogin Eva Neureiter fasst mit ihrem Beitrag sehr konkret und praktisch ihre jahrelangen Erfahrungen mit dem Radiomachen in Schulklassen zusammen. Dabei versteht sich ihr Beitrag durchwegs als ein Plädoyer für die Medienpädagogik, denn die Medienarbeit muss in Zeiten der Digitalen Bildung ein wichtiger Bestandteil des Unterrichts sein. Die Arbeit in Freien Medien und das konkrete Tun im Radiostudio bieten dabei, so die Autorin, auch eine Chance für das Einleiten demokratiepolitischer Prozesse, die schon bei Kindern für Partizipation und Mitgestaltung befördern können. Dabei sieht Neureiter den Sinn der Arbeit von Pädagoginnen bzw. Pädagogen keineswegs darin, die Kinder an vorgeschriebene Testungen anzupassen, sondern die Medienpädagogik an unsere Kinder heranzuführen.The elementary school teacher Eva Neureiter summarizes with her contribution very concrete and practical her years of experience in radio teaching in school classes. In doing so, their contribution consistently sees itself as a plea for media education, because media work must be an important part of teaching in times of digital education. The work in free media and the concrete action in the radio studio also offer, according to the author, an opportunity for the initiation of democracy-political processes, which can promote even with children for participation and participation. Neureiter sees the meaning of the work of educators by no means to adapt the children to prescribed tests, but to bring the media education to our children
