Theoretical Setting of Inner Reversible Quantum Measurements
We show that any unitary transformation performed on the quantum state of a
closed quantum system, describes an inner, reversible, generalized quantum
measurement. We also show that under some specific conditions it is possible to
perform a unitary transformation on the state of the closed quantum system by
means of a collection of generalized measurement operators. In particular,
given a complete set of orthogonal projectors, it is possible to implement a
reversible quantum measurement that preserves the probabilities. In this
context, we introduce the concept of "Truth-Observable", which is the physical
counterpart of an inner logical truth.Comment: 11 pages. More concise, shortened version for submission to journal.

Strong entanglement causes low gate fidelity in inaccurate one-way quantum computation
We study how entanglement among the register qubits affects the gate fidelity
in the one-way quantum computation if a measurement is inaccurate. We derive an
inequality which shows that the mean gate fidelity is upper bounded by a
decreasing function of the magnitude of the error of the measurement and the
amount of the entanglement between the measured qubit and other register
qubits. The consequence of this inequality is that, for a given amount of
entanglement, which is theoretically calculated once the algorithm is fixed, we
can estimate from this inequality how small the magnitude of the error should
be in order not to make the gate fidelity below a threshold, which is specified
by a technical requirement in a particular experimental setup or by the
threshold theorem of the fault-tolerant quantum computation.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
Thermal barrier coating life prediction model development
Thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) for turbine airfoils in high-performance engines represent an advanced materials technology with both performance and durability benefits. The foremost TBC benefit is the reduction of heat transferred into air-cooled components, which yields performance and durability benefits. This program focuses on predicting the lives of two types of strain-tolerant and oxidation-resistant TBC systems that are produced by commercial coating suppliers to the gas turbine industry. The plasma-sprayed TBC system, composed of a low-pressure plasma-spray (LPPS) or an argon shrouded plasma-spray (ASPS) applied oxidation resistant NiCrAlY (or CoNiCrAlY) bond coating and an air-plasma-sprayed yttria (8 percent) partially stabilized zirconia insulative layer, is applied by Chromalloy, Klock, and Union Carbide. The second type of TBC is applied by the electron beam-physical vapor deposition (EB-PVD) process by Temescal
Bistable Chimera Attractors on a Triangular Network of Oscillator Populations
We study a triangular network of three populations of coupled phase
oscillators with identical frequencies. The populations interact nonlocally, in
the sense that all oscillators are coupled to one another, but more weakly to
those in neighboring populations than to those in their own population. This
triangular network is the simplest discretization of a continuous ring of
oscillators. Yet it displays an unexpectedly different behavior: in contrast to
the lone stable chimera observed in continuous rings of oscillators, we find
that this system exhibits \emph{two coexisting stable chimeras}. Both chimeras
are, as usual, born through a saddle node bifurcation. As the coupling becomes
increasingly local in nature they lose stability through a Hopf bifurcation,
giving rise to breathing chimeras, which in turn get destroyed through a
homoclinic bifurcation. Remarkably, one of the chimeras reemerges by a reversal
of this scenario as we further increase the locality of the coupling, until it
is annihilated through another saddle node bifurcation.Comment: 12 pages, 5 figure
Local Unitary Quantum Cellular Automata
In this paper we present a quantization of Cellular Automata. Our formalism
is based on a lattice of qudits, and an update rule consisting of local unitary
operators that commute with their own lattice translations. One purpose of this
model is to act as a theoretical model of quantum computation, similar to the
quantum circuit model. It is also shown to be an appropriate abstraction for
space-homogeneous quantum phenomena, such as quantum lattice gases, spin chains
and others. Some results that show the benefits of basing the model on local
unitary operators are shown: universality, strong connections to the circuit
model, simple implementation on quantum hardware, and a wealth of applications.Comment: To appear in Physical Review
Performance of a centrifugal pump running in inverse mode
This paper presents the functional characterization of a centrifugal pump used as a turbine. It shows the characteristics of the machine involved at several rotational speeds, comparing the respective flows and heads. In this way, it is possible to observe the influence of the rotational speed on efficiency, as well as obtaining the characteristics at constant head and runaway speed. Also, the forces actuating on the impeller were studied. An uncertainty analysis was made to assess the accuracy of the results. The research results indicate that the turbine characteristics can be predicted to some extent from the pump characteristics, that water flows out of the runner free of swirl flow at the best efficiency point, and that radial stresses are lower than in pump mode
Multiple Scales in the Fine Structure of the Isoscalar Giant Quadrupole Resonance in ^{208}Pb
The fine structure of the isoscalar giant quadrupole resonance in ^{208}Pb,
observed in high-resolution (p,p') and (e,e') experiments, is studied using the
entropy index method. In a novel way, it enables to determine the number of
scales present in the spectra and their magnitude. We find intermediate scales
of fluctuations around 1.1 MeV, 460 keV and 125 keV for an excitation energy
region 0 - 12 MeV. A comparison with scales extracted from second RPA
calculations, which are in good agreement with experiment, shows that they
arise from the internal mixing of collective motion with two particle-two hole
components of the nuclear wavefunction.Comment: 14 pages including 6 figures (to be published in Phys. Lett. B
Quantum Parrondo's game with random strategies
We present a quantum implementation of Parrondo's game with randomly switched
strategies using 1) a quantum walk as a source of ``randomness'' and 2) a
completely positive (CP) map as a randomized evolution. The game exhibits the
same paradox as in the classical setting where a combination of two losing
strategies might result in a winning strategy. We show that the CP-map scheme
leads to significantly lower net gain than the quantum walk scheme
Formation of long-lived, scarlike modes near avoided resonance crossings in optical microcavities
We study the formation of long-lived states near avoided resonance crossings
in open systems. For three different optical microcavities (rectangle, ellipse,
and semi-stadium) we provide numerical evidence that these states are localized
along periodic rays, resembling scarred states in closed systems. Our results
shed light on the morphology of long-lived states in open mesoscopic systems.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures (in reduced quality), to appear in Phys. Rev. Let
Optimal Covariant Measurement of Momentum on a Half Line in Quantum Mechanics
We cannot perform the projective measurement of a momentum on a half line
since it is not an observable. Nevertheless, we would like to obtain some
physical information of the momentum on a half line. We define an optimality
for measurement as minimizing the variance between an inferred outcome of the
measured system before a measuring process and a measurement outcome of the
probe system after the measuring process, restricting our attention to the
covariant measurement studied by Holevo. Extending the domain of the momentum
operator on a half line by introducing a two dimensional Hilbert space to be
tensored, we make it self-adjoint and explicitly construct a model Hamiltonian
for the measured and probe systems. By taking the partial trace over the newly
introduced Hilbert space, the optimal covariant positive operator valued
measure (POVM) of a momentum on a half line is reproduced. We physically
describe the measuring process to optimally evaluate the momentum of a particle
on a half line.Comment: 12 pages, 3 figure
