    Drivers of Digital Transformation in Manufacturing

    Digital transformation is one of the most current topics for the manufacturing industry. This transfor-mation affects the operational value creation process, enables new ways of doing business and leads to fun-damental changes in organizations. However, the implementation of new digital technologies, as well as the realization of these changes, still face many difficulties. It is important to understand organizational and individual adoption processes. Which drivers push the adoption of digital technologies in manufacturing? We used a qualitative research approach to gain in-depth insights from interviews with 16 participants. For digital transformation in manufacturing, we identified 12 drivers as well as perceived or expected advantages that arise with the technology use. Companies are mainly motivated by the goal of process improvement and demands communicated by their customers. We aim to strengthen the understanding of the whole disruptive and vast changing processes which are ongoing in manufacturing

    Designing a Flipped Classroom Course – a Process Model

    Digital learning has become more than just a trend in the modern world. Blended learning concepts are well established in different areas of application. An important concept in this domain is the so-called flipped classroom. This approach repurposes class time to focus on application and discussion, while the acquisition of basic knowledge will happen at home, enabled by online lectures. In the past, research demonstrated and discussed the advantages of flipped classroom concepts within case studies. Still, standardized guidelines for the development of flipped classrooms are rare. However, it is necessary to learn from the past to improve future education. Thus, we analyzed reviews on flipped classroom research and used these to develop a generic process model for the realization of flipped classroom concepts. The model is based on phases taken from project management, which help to structure the procedure and associated tasks

    Towards the User: Extending the Job Characteristics Model to Measure Job Satisfaction for ERP Based Workplaces – A Qualitative Approach

    Over the past years the widely spread use of enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems has significantly changed the way of working. The close correlation between task fulfillment and ERP use has an essential effect on the software users and their job satisfaction. To understand job satisfaction is an important success factor for all firms because it impacts the behavior of the employees. The job characteristics model (JCM) derived by Hackman and Oldham explains job satisfaction by looking at the characteristics of the tasks. Because of the significant impact of technologies, such as ERP systems, we argue that the model has to be extended towards a user-centered view and found technology characteristics explaining job satisfaction, too. We use a qualitative approach to define these unknown constructs and derived an extended model which has to be tested and verified by further research

    A Taxonomy of Barriers to Digital Transformation

    Companies expect significant long-term gains in efficiency and productivity through digital transformation (DT). New ways of combining products, processes, and data-driven services, as well as new business models emerge. However, the rapid development of the DT leads to constraints regarding its realization. Barriers hinder companies to realize possible advantages out of DT. If firms promptly recognize potential barriers, they can reflect upon these challenges and can take well-coordinated countermeasures. Social, technical and socio-technical problems address different stakeholder and ask for specific solutions. Therefore, our study aims at developing a taxonomy for barriers to DT to enable researchers and practitioners to identify and classify existing barriers. For deriving the dimensions and characteristics, we collected data by conducting46 semi-structured interviews with experts and enriched these by looking at the literature on DT barriers

    TOWARDS A FRAMEWORK FOR DIGITAL TRANSFOR-MATION SUCCESS IN MANUFACTURING

    Digital Transformation (DT) affects whole enterprises and is expected to drive a disruptive change in the way people work. Digital technologies leverage changes from simple tasks to the enterprise-wide strategy. Enterprises expect major benefits from investments in DT. However, digital transformation is a complex process and hence difficult to understand. Many different use scenarios exist so that decisions about the adoption of technologies are challenging. Therefore, it is critical to understand which benefits might be achieved with DT. With our research, we contribute to the understanding of digital transformation success. We develop and evaluate a framework that covers the main dimensions of digital transformation success. Literature from IS success and DT research is used to identify these dimensions. To evaluate this framework, we use data gained in a qualitative approach. We combine findings from a literature research with qualitative results to offer deeper insights into peoples\u27 understanding of what shapes the success. The framework is useful to classify benefits achieved by DT and to point out new possibilities of gaining success with DT

    Simulation of Incidental Distribution Generation Curtailment to Maximize the Integration of Renewable Energy Generation in Power Systems

    Power system security is increasingly endangered due to novel power flow situations caused by the growing integration of distributed generation. Consequently, grid operators are forced to request the curtailment of distributed generators to ensure the compliance with operational limits more often. This research proposes a framework to simulate the incidental amount of renewable energy curtailment based on load flow analysis of the network. Real data from a 110 kV distribution network located in Germany are used to validate the proposed framework by implementing best practice curtailment approaches. Furthermore, novel operational concepts are investigated to improve the practical implementation of distributed generation curtailment. Specifically, smaller curtailment level increments, coordinated selection methods, and an extension of the n-1 security criterion are analyzed. Moreover, combinations of these concepts are considered to depict interdependencies between several operational aspects. The results quantify the potential of the proposed concepts to improve established grid operation practices by minimizing distributed generation curtailment and, thus, maximizing power system integration of renewable energies. In particular, the extension of the n-1 criterion offers significant potential to reduce curtailment by up to 94.8% through a more efficient utilization of grid capacities

    Technical and economic analysis of curative actions in distribution networks utilizing battery energy storage systems

    Renewable energy generation curtailment increases due to more frequently occurring congestions in power system operation. Post-contingency curative congestion management actions can reduce the necessity of renewable energy curtailment by enabling a more efficient utilization of transmission capacities. In this research, the potential of curative actions to substitute renewable energy curtailment is studied considering technical and economic criteria. Therefore, a novel pricing methodology for the market-based provision of curative actions is introduced. The method is based on the security constraint optimal power flow technique. Simulations are carried out on a modified version of the IEEE 14-bus network and a real-world 110 kV distribution network. Battery energy storage systems are implemented as an exemplary technology to provide curative actions. The developed method achieves a positive power system impact by reducing operational costs and maximizing renewable energy integration. Also, novel business models for merchant-owned battery energy storage systems are unveiled. The provision of curative actions further proves to be competitive to established battery storage applications. Additionally, results of different grid expansion scenarios of the 110 kV network reveal the need to coordinate power system planning and operation more extensively in the future

    Demand and efficiency of congestion management methods on the distribution grid level

    An entirely renewable energy system requires significant adaptions of existing electrical networks. Apart from conventional grid reinforcement and expansion, an efficient utilisation of existing grid capacities during operation is becoming more important. Grid operators use congestion management in order to ensure a secure supply of all network participants. In Germany, the curtailment of renewable energy generation units is increasingly being used for this purpose. This is critical with regards to the ambitious national climate targets. The present work thus analyses different approaches for reducing renewable energy curtailment, taking relevant grid security criteria into account. A method for simulating operational congestion management has been developed and applied to synthetic power systems as well as a real distribution grid region in Germany. Different approaches for the reduction of renewable energy curtailment are evaluated. Especially the utilisation of formerly unused grid capacities by using curative actions proves to be an efficient approach for minimising curtailment

    Digitale Transformation ist aktuell eines der am meisten diskutierten Themen in Forschung und Praxis. Unternehmen stehen vor zahlreichen Herausforderungen, welche sich vor allem in der Entwicklung, Verbreitung und Implementierung der neuen Technologien widerspiegeln. Insbesondere in der Fertigungsindustrie, im Vergleich zu agileren Branchen wie Entertainment oder Informationstechnologie (IT), ist die Umsetzung anspruchsvoll. Um das Entscheidungsverhalten der Unternehmen gegenĂŒber digitaler Innovationen besser verstehen zu können, untersucht diese Dissertation die organisationale Adoption. Es werden einerseits Einflussfaktoren auf die Adoption identifiziert sowie andererseits Auswirkungen der digitalen Transformation beschrieben. Dabei verfolgt die Arbeit einen ganzheitlichen Ansatz, sodass nicht mehr einzelne Technologien im Fokus stehen, sondern die Kombination dieser und damit organisatorische Auswirkungen in den Vordergrund rĂŒcken. Um neue Erkenntnisse zu gewinnen, wird ĂŒberwiegend theoriebildend unter der Anwendung qualitativer Forschungsmethoden gearbeitet. Die Ergebnisse verdeutlichen, dass die Einflussfaktoren der pre-Adoptionsphase ein breites Spektrum umfassen, da neben technologischen Faktoren auch Bereiche wie Organisation, Umwelt und Individuen die Adoption beeinflussen. Um DT erfolgreich umzusetzen, genĂŒgt es somit nicht, die technologischen Voraussetzungen zu erfĂŒllen, sondern die VerĂ€nderung geht einher mit einem organisatorischen Wandel. Die Organisationskultur muss hinterfragt und an neue Ziele und Arbeitsweisen angepasst werden.
