    Influence of light and leaf epicuticular wax layer on Phakopsora pachyrhizi infection in soybean

    A ferrugem asiática, causada pelo fungo Phakopsora pachyrhizi, apresenta-se como um dos mais graves problemas fitossanitários da cultura da soja no Brasil, principalmente por não existirem, até o presente momento, cultivares com níveis de resistência satisfatórios. Objetivou-se estudar a influência da luminosidade e da camada de cera das superfícies foliares na infecção de folhas de soja por P. pachyrhizi. A superfície adaxial ou abaxial de folíolos do primeiro trifólio de plantas da cultivar BRS 154, estádio fenológico V2, foi inoculada com suspensão de 10(5) urediniósporos/mL-1. As plantas foram mantidas por 24 horas em câmara úmida e temperatura de 23ºC, sob luz ou escuro, em delineamento fatorial. Posteriormente, permaneceram 14 dias em fotoperíodo de 12 horas, sendo em seguida avaliada a densidade de lesões e a severidade da doença. Em um segundo experimento, avaliou-se in vitro , no escuro e na luz, a porcentagem de germinação de urediniósporos e de formação de apressórios. As camadas de cera adaxial e abaxial dos folíolos foram analisadas quantitativamente (extrações com clorofórmio) e estruturalmente (microscopia eletrônica de varredura). A densidade de lesões e a severidade foram maiores quando se inoculou a superfície adaxial de plantas incubadas no escuro, sem interação significativa entre os fatores. A germinação dos esporos no escuro (40,7%) foi significativamente superior à germinação na luz (28,5%). O mesmo ocorreu para a formação de apressórios, no escuro (24,7%) e na luz (12,8%). A quantidade e a estrutura das ceras epicuticulares não apresentaram diferenças entre as duas superfícies.Asian rust, caused by the fungus Phakopsora pachyrhizi, is one of the most serious phytosanitary problems of soybean in Brazil, especially because no cultivars with satisfactory resistance levels as yet exist. The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of luminosity and of leaf epicuticular wax on the infection of soybean by P. pachyrhizi. The adaxial and abaxial leaflet surfaces of the first trifoliate leaf from cultivar BRS 154, phenological stage V2, were inoculated with a suspension of 10(5) uredospores/mL. The plants were kept for 24 hours in a humid chamber at temperature of 23ºC, in light or dark conditions, using a factorial design. Subsequently, the plants were maintained for 14 days under a 12-hour photoperiod. The disease severity and density were evaluated. For in vitro experiments, in light or dark conditions, the evaluation was done in terms of uredospore germination and appressorium formation. The wax content of adaxial and abaxial leaflets was analyzed quantitatively using chloroform extraction and ultrastructurally using scanning electron microscope. Higher density and severity were observed when the adaxial surface was inoculated, with later incubation of the plants in the dark, with no significant interaction between these factors. Spore germination in the dark (40.7%) was statistically different from spore germination in the light (28.5%). The same effect was observed with appressorium formation, in the dark (24.7%) and in the light (12.8%). The quantity and the ultrastructural aspects of epicuticular wax content did not show differences between the adaxial and abaxial surfaces; nor did they show any effect on infection by Phakopsora pachyrhizi in the soybean cultivar studied

    Superinflation, quintessence, and nonsingular cosmologies

    The dynamics of a universe dominated by a self-interacting nonminimally coupled scalar field are considered. The structure of the phase space and complete phase portraits are given. New dynamical behaviors include superinflation (H˙>0\dot{H}>0), avoidance of big bang singularities through classical birth of the universe, and spontaneous entry into and exit from inflation.     The Strong CP Problem and Axions

    I describe how the QCD vacuum structure, necessary to resolve the U(1)AU(1)_A problem, predicts the presence of a P, T and CP violating term proportional to the vacuum angle θˉ\bar{\theta}. To agree with experimental bounds, however, this parameter must be very small (θˉ109(\bar{\theta} \leq 10^{-9}). After briefly discussing some possible other solutions to this, so-called, strong CP problem, I concentrate on the chiral solution proposed by Peccei and Quinn which has associated with it a light pseudoscalar particle, the axion. I discuss in detail the properties and dynamics of axions, focusing particularly on invisible axion models where axions are very light, very weakly coupled and very long-lived.     Replica Symmetry Breaking Instability in the 2D XY model in a random field

    We study the 2D vortex-free XY model in a random field, a model for randomly pinned flux lines in a plane. We construct controlled RG recursion relations which allow for replica symmetry breaking (RSB). The fixed point previously found by Cardy and Ostlund in the glass phase T<TcT<T_c is {\it unstable} to RSB. The susceptibility χ\chi associated to infinitesimal RSB perturbation in the high-temperature phase is found to diverge as χ(TTc)γ\chi \propto (T-T_c)^{-\gamma} when TTc+T \rightarrow T_c^{+}. This provides analytical evidence that RSB occurs in finite dimensional models. The physical consequences for the glass phase are discussed.Comment: 8 pages, REVTeX, LPTENS-94/2

    Public Health Interventions for Osteoarthritis - updates on the Osteoarthritis Action Alliance's efforts to address the 2010 OA Public Health Agenda Recommendations

    Osteoarthritis (OA) is a painful joint disease affecting more than 32.5 million adults in the US and over 350 million adults worldwide. The prevalence is expected to rise continually over the next several decades with significant impacts to societal health and economic costs as well as individuals' daily activities and quality of life. In 2008, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Arthritis Foundation (AF) led a collaborative effort to address approaches to reduce the burden of OA via public health interventions, policies (systems and environmental), and communication strategies. This collaboration resulted in the National Public Health Agenda for OA (OA Agenda), which was vetted by more than 75 stakeholder organisations and released in 2010. The OA Agenda listed ten recommendations focused on public health interventions for OA including weight management, physical activity, self-management education, and injury prevention, and policies, systems, communication, research and evaluation. In 2011, the CDC and AF mobilised the OA Action Alliance (OAAA), a national coalition of organisations concerned with mitigating the public health impact of OA, to operationalise the recommendations set forth in the OA Agenda. Since then, the OAAA has grown to include more than 110 organisations that work collectively to increase awareness about the prevention and management of OA, provide educational resources, and expand access to evidence-based programmes for target audiences including individuals with OA, community-based organisations, healthcare systems and providers, and policymakers. This review highlights the OAAA's progress to date in addressing the OA Agenda recommendations; successes and challenges in delivery of effective communication, programmes, and resources; and future implications

    Defining multiple joint osteoarthritis, its frequency and impact in a community-based cohort

    Background/purpose: To update definitions of multiple joint osteoarthritis (MJOA), and to determine the frequency and impact of MJOA in a community-based cohort. Methods: Following PRISMA guidelines and with the help of a professional research librarian, we performed a systematic review in Medline using the terms osteoarthritis, generalized, polyarticular, multiple joint, and multi-joint among others, to obtain articles related to MJOA. A total of 42 articles were included for data extraction based on multiple criteria including the requirement for a clearly stated definition of OA assessed at more than one body site. We assessed frequency of these definitions in the Johnston County OA Project (JoCo OA)cohort as well as outcomes related to general health and physical function. Results: A total of 6 clearly stated definitions for MJOA were identified. These definitions were integrated with a list of 24 definitions from our previous systematic review and distilled down to produce 10 literature-derived, operationalized MJOA definitions. Based on these definitions, high frequencies of radiographic (4–74%)and symptomatic (2–52%)MJOA were found in the JoCo OA. Significant detrimental effects were seen on general health and physical function for most definitions. Conclusions: We constructed a list of 10 summary MJOA definitions based in the literature that are frequent and associated with important clinical outcomes. These definitions capture some of the variability of MJOA phenotypes and provide a starting point for future analyses of both existing and newly initiated studies

    Theta angle versus CP violation in the leptonic sector

    Assuming that the axion mechanism of solving the strong CP problem does not exist and the vanishing of theta at tree level is achieved by some model-building means, we study the naturalness of having large CP-violating sources in the leptonic sector. We consider the radiative mechanisms which transfer a possibly large CP-violating phase in the leptonic sector to the theta parameter. It is found that large theta cannot be induced in the models with one Higgs doublet as at least three loops are required in this case. In the models with two or more Higgs doublets the dominant source of theta is the phases in the scalar potential, induced by CP violation in leptonic sector. Thus, in the MSSM framework the imaginary part of the trilinear soft-breaking parameter A_l generates the corrections to the theta angle already at one loop. These corrections are large, excluding the possibility of large phases, unless the universality in the slepton sector is strongly violated.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figure

    Comorbid conditions and the transition among states of hip osteoarthritis and symptoms in a community-based study: A multi-state time-to-event model approach

    Background: We examined the association of three common chronic conditions (obesity, diabetes mellitus [DM], and cardiovascular disease [CVD]) with transitions among states of hip osteoarthritis (HOA). Methods: This longitudinal analysis used data from the Johnston County Osteoarthritis Project (JoCo OA, n = 3857), a community-based study in North Carolina, USA, with 18.4 ± 1.5 years of follow-up. Transitions across the following states were modeled: development of radiographic HOA (rHOA; Kellgren-Lawrence grade [KLG] of&lt; 2); development of hip symptoms (self-reported hip pain, aching, or stiffness on most days) or symptomatic HOA (sxHOA; rHOA and symptoms in the same hip), and resolution of symptoms. Obesity (body mass index ≥ 30 kg/m2) and self-reported DM and CVD were the time-dependent comorbid conditions of interest. Markov multi-state models were used to estimate adjusted hazard ratios and 95% confidence intervals to describe the associations between the conditions and HOA states. Results: The sample included 33% African Americans, 39% men, with a mean (SD) age of 62.2 (9.8) years; the frequencies of the comorbidities increased substantially over time. When considered individually, obesity was associated with incident hip symptoms, while CVD and DM were associated with reduced symptom resolution. For those with &gt; 1 comorbidity, the likelihood of incident sxHOA increased, while that of symptom resolution significantly decreased. When stratified by sex, the association between obesity and incident symptoms was only seen in women; among men with DM versus men without, there was a significant (~ 75%) reduction in symptom resolution in those with rHOA. When stratified by race, African Americans with DM, versus those without, were much more likely to develop sxHOA. Conclusions: Comorbid chronic conditions are common in individuals with OA, and these conditions have a significant impact on the persistence and progression of HOA. OA management decisions, both pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic, should include considerations of the inter-relationships between OA and common comorbidities such as DM and CVD

    Passing through the bounce in the ekpyrotic models

    By considering a simplified but exact model for realizing the ekpyrotic scenario, we clarify various assumptions that have been used in the literature. In particular, we discuss the new ekpyrotic prescription for passing the perturbations through the singularity which we show to provide a spectrum depending on a non physical normalization function. We also show that this prescription does not reproduce the exact result for a sharp transition. Then, more generally, we demonstrate that, in the only case where a bounce can be obtained in Einstein General Relativity without facing singularities and/or violation of the standard energy conditions, the bounce cannot be made arbitrarily short. This contrasts with the standard (inflationary) situation where the transition between two eras with different values of the equation of state can be considered as instantaneous. We then argue that the usually conserved quantities are not constant on a typical bounce time scale. Finally, we also examine the case of a test scalar field (or gravitational waves) where similar results are obtained. We conclude that the full dynamical equations of the underlying theory should be solved in a non singular case before any conclusion can be drawn.Comment: 17 pages, ReVTeX 4, 13 figures, minor corrections, conclusions unchange

    Developing a Primary Care–Focused Intervention to Engage Patients With Osteoarthritis in Physical Activity: A Stakeholder Engagement Qualitative Study

    Physical activity (PA) is important for managing osteoarthritis (OA), but many patients are inactive. Research is needed on strategies to leverage clinical encounters to engage patients in PA. Guided by the socioecological model of health behavior, this study aimed to engage stakeholders in the process of refining an Osteoarthritis Physical Activity Care Pathway (OA-PCP). Six focus groups and seven individual interviews were conducted with key stakeholders. Focus groups were specific to stakeholder roles and included patients with OA, support partners, and clinic personnel (n = 6 focus groups). Interview participants were local and national PA program representatives (n = 7 interviews). Data were analyzed by thematic analysis. Themes identified in the data included ways the OA-PCP can help patients with OA address challenges to PA engagement, strategies for connecting patients with PA resources, methods for implementing OA-PCP into clinical settings and potential use of PA trackers in the OA-PCP program. Stakeholders’ comments were summarized into key recommendations for OA-PCP. Some recommendations reinforced and led to refinements in planned aspects of OA-PCP, including tailoring to individual patients, involvement of a support partner, and addressing pain with PA. Other recommendations resulted in larger changes for OA-PCP, including the addition of three email- or mail-based contacts and not requiring use of a PA tracker. The refined OA-PCP program is being evaluated in an exploratory trial, with the ultimate goal of establishing a PA program for OA that can be successfully implemented in clinical settings
