Casimir Force between two Half Spaces of Vortex Matter in Anisotropic Superconductors
We present a new approach to calculate the attractive long-range
vortex-vortex interaction of the van der Waals type present in anisotropic and
layered superconductors. The mapping of the statistical mechanics of
two-dimensional charged bosons allows us to define a Casimir problem: Two half
spaces of vortex matter separated by a gap of width R are mapped to two
dielectric half planes of charged bosons interacting via a massive gauge field.
We determine the attractive Casimir force between the two half planes and show
that it agrees with the pairwise summation of the van der Waals force between
vortices.Comment: Submitted to Physica C (4 pages, 2 figures
Numerical Study of the Spin-Flop Transition in Anisotropic Spin-1/2 Antiferromagnets
Magnetization processes of the spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic model in two
and three spatial dimensions are studied using quantum Monte Carlo method based
on stochastic series expansions. Recently developed operator-loop algorithm
enables us to show a clear evidence of the first-order phase transition in the
presence of an external magnetic field. Phase diagrams of closely related
systems, hard core bosons with nearest-neighbor repulsions, are also discussed
focusing on possibilities of phase-separated and supersolid phases.Comment: 4 pages, Revtex version 4, with 4 figures embedded, To appear in

Spin-dynamics simulations of the triangular antiferromagnetic XY model
Using Monte Carlo and spin-dynamics methods, we have investigated the dynamic
behavior of the classical, antiferromagnetic XY model on a triangular lattice
with linear sizes . The temporal evolutions of spin configurations
were obtained by solving numerically the coupled equations of motion for each
spin using fourth-order Suzuki-Trotter decompositions of exponential operators.
From space- and time-displaced spin-spin correlation functions and their
space-time Fourier transforms we obtained the dynamic structure factor for momentum and frequency . Below
(Kosterlitz-Thouless transition), both the in-plane () and the
out-of-plane () components of exhibit very strong
and sharp spin-wave peaks. Well above , and
apparently display a central peak, and spin-wave signatures are still seen in
. In addition, we also observed an almost dispersionless domain-wall
peak at high below (Ising transition), where long-range order
appears in the staggered chirality. Above , the domain-wall peak
disappears for all . The lineshape of these peaks is captured reasonably
well by a Lorentzian form. Using a dynamic finite-size scaling theory, we
determined the dynamic critical exponent = 1.002(3). We found that our
results demonstrate the consistency of the dynamic finite-size scaling theory
for the characteristic frequeny and the dynamic structure factor
itself.Comment: 8 pages, RevTex, 10 figures, submitted to PR
Physical Model for Plaque Action in the Tooth-Plaque-Saliva System
A physical model describing the interrelationships of demineralization, remineralization, plaque thickness, glucose levels, and plaque enzymatic activity was presented. Selection of constants and variations of the parameters were kept in the range of possible in vivo situations. The results of calculations were discussed and correlated with the results of in vivo studies.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/66483/2/10.1177_00220345700490013001.pd
Nature of the quantum phase transitions in the two-dimensional hardcore boson model
We use two Quantum Monte Carlo algorithms to map out the phase diagram of the
two-dimensional hardcore boson Hubbard model with near () and next near
() neighbor repulsion. At half filling we find three phases: Superfluid
(SF), checkerboard solid and striped solid depending on the relative values of
, and the kinetic energy. Doping away from half filling, the
checkerboard solid undergoes phase separation: The superfluid and solid phases
co-exist but not as a single thermodynamic phase. As a function of doping, the
transition from the checkerboard solid is therefore first order. In contrast,
doping the striped solid away from half filling instead produces a striped
supersolid phase: Co-existence of density order with superfluidity as a single
phase. One surprising result is that the entire line of transitions between the
SF and checkerboard solid phases at half filling appears to exhibit dynamical
O(3) symmetry restoration. The transitions appear to be in the same
universality class as the special Heisenberg point even though this symmetry is
explicitly broken by the interaction.Comment: 10 pages, 14 eps figures, include
Experimental Study of the Shortest Reset Word of Random Automata
In this paper we describe an approach to finding the shortest reset word of a
finite synchronizing automaton by using a SAT solver. We use this approach to
perform an experimental study of the length of the shortest reset word of a
finite synchronizing automaton. The largest automata we considered had 100
states. The results of the experiments allow us to formulate a hypothesis that
the length of the shortest reset word of a random finite automaton with
states and 2 input letters with high probability is sublinear with respect to
and can be estimated as $1.95 n^{0.55}.
Two-proton correlations from 158 AGeV Pb+Pb central collisions
The two-proton correlation function at midrapidity from Pb+Pb central
collisions at 158 AGeV has been measured by the NA49 experiment. The results
are compared to model predictions from static thermal Gaussian proton source
distributions and transport models RQMD and VENUS. An effective proton source
size is determined by minimizing CHI-square/ndf between the correlation
functions of the data and those calculated for the Gaussian sources, yielding
3.85 +-0.15(stat.) +0.60-0.25(syst.) fm. Both the RQMD and the VENUS model are
consistent with the data within the error in the correlation peak region.Comment: RevTeX style, 6 pages, 4 figures, 1 table. More discussion are added
about the structure on the tail of the correlation function. The systematic
error is revised. To appear in Phys. Lett.
Event-by-event fluctuations of average transverse momentum in central Pb+Pb collisions at 158 GeV per nucleon
We present first data on event-by-event fluctuations in the average
transverse momentum of charged particles produced in Pb+Pb collisions at the
CERN SPS. This measurement provides previously unavailable information allowing
sensitive tests of microscopic and thermodynamic collision models and to search
for fluctuations expected to occur in the vicinity of the predicted QCD phase
transition. We find that the observed variance of the event-by-event average
transverse momentum is consistent with independent particle production modified
by the known two-particle correlations due to quantum statistics and final
state interactions and folded with the resolution of the NA49 apparatus. For
two specific models of non-statistical fluctuations in transverse momentum
limits are derived in terms of fluctuation amplitude. We show that a
significant part of the parameter space for a model of isospin fluctuations
predicted as a consequence of chiral symmetry restoration in a non-equilibrium
scenario is excluded by our measurement.Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures, submitted to Phys. Lett.
Results on correlations and fluctuations from NA49
The large acceptance and high momentum resolution as well as the significant
particle identification capabilities of the NA49 experiment at the CERN SPS
allow for a broad study of fluctuations and correlations in hadronic
interactions. In the first part recent results on event-by-event charge and p_t
fluctuations are presented. Charge fluctuations in central Pb+Pb reactions are
investigated at three different beam energies (40, 80, and 158 AGeV), while for
the p_t fluctuations the focus is put on the system size dependence at 158
AGeV. In the second part recent results on Bose Einstein correlations of h-h-
pairs in minimum bias Pb+Pb reactions at 40 and 158 AGeV, as well as of K+K+
and K-K- pairs in central Pb+Pb collisions at 158 AGeV are shown. Additionally,
other types of two particle correlations, namely pi p, Lambda p, and Lambda
Lambda correlations, have been measured by the NA49 experiment. Finally,
results on the energy and system size dependence of deuteron coalescence are
discussed.Comment: 10 pages, 12 figures, Presented at Quark Matter 2002, Nantes, France,
