    Photochemistry and kinetics of gas phase reactions involving HO and Cl radicals

    The kinetics of the reaction of the HO radical with HNO/sub 3/ and H/sub 2/O/sub 2/, the kinetics of Cl atom reactions with ClNO and ClNO/sub 2/, and the photochemistry of ClNO/sub 2/ and ClONO/sub 2/ were examined. The ultraviolet absorption cross sections of HNO/sub 3/ and ClNO/sub 2/ were also determined as part of the kinetics work. The rate constant for the reaction of HO with HNO/sub 3/ at room temperature was measured to be (8.2 +- 1.8) x 10/sup -14/ cm/sup 3/ molecule/sup -1/ s/sup -1/, where the uncertainty reported here and in all cases reflects twice the experimental standard deviation plus an estimate of systematic errors. The rate constant for the reaction HO + H/sub 2/O/sub 2/ was measured as (1.57 +- 0.23) x 10/sup -12/ cm/sup 3/ molecule/sup -1/ s/sup -1/. This agrees well with the two latest determinations and serves as a calibration of the experimental apparatus used. The Cl + ClNO reaction rate constant was determined to be (1.65 +- 0.32) x 10/sup -11/ cm/sup 3/ molecule/sup -1/ s/sup -1/. The rate constant for the reaction of Cl + ClNO/sub 2/ was found to be (5.05 +- 0.75) x 10/sup -12/ cm/sup 3/ molecule/sup -1/ s/sup -1/. This is the first direct measurement of this rate constant. The photodissociation of ClNO/sub 2/ was studied in great detail. The absorption cross sections were measured in the ultraviolet and found to be substantially lower than the literature values in the Cl/sub 2/ absorption region (300 to 360 nm). Two product channels were investigated; products representative of the two channels were Cl and O atoms. Absolute calibration for the product detection systems was provided by Cl/sub 2/ and NO/sub 2/ photolysis respectively. The quantum uields measured for photolysis at 350 nm, calcualted using the absorption spectrum measured in this work, are: 0.93 +- 0.1 for Cl and less than or equal to 0.025 for O. An upper limit of 0.1 was measured for the O atom channel in ClOHO/sub 2/ photolysis

    Genetic inactivation of the epithelial Na(+) channel α-subunit (αENaC) in the renal collecting duct (CD) does not interfere with Na(+) and K(+) homeostasis in mice. However, inactivation in the CD and a part of the connecting tubule (CNT) induces autosomal recessive pseudohypoaldosteronism type 1 (PHA-1) symptoms in subjects already on a standard diet. In the present study, we further examined the importance of αENaC in the CNT. Knockout mice with αENaC deleted primarily in a part of the CNT (CNT-KO) were generated using Scnn1a(lox/lox) mice and Atp6v1b1::Cre mice. With a standard diet, plasma Na(+) concentration ([Na(+)]) and [K(+)], and urine Na(+) and K(+) output were unaffected. Seven days of Na(+) restriction (0.01% Na(+)) led to a higher urine Na(+) output only on days 3-5, and after 7 days plasma [Na(+)] and [K(+)] were unaffected. In contrast, the CNT-KO mice were highly susceptible to a 2-day 5% K(+) diet and showed lower food intake and relative body weight, lower plasma [Na(+)], higher fractional excretion (FE) of Na(+), higher plasma [K(+)], and lower FE of K(+). The higher FE of Na(+) coincided with lower abundance and phosphorylation of the Na(+)-Cl(-) cotransporter. In conclusion, reducing ENaC expression in the CNT induces clear PHA-1 symptoms during high dietary K(+) loading

    Equivalence of the (generalised) Hadamard and microlocal spectrum condition for (generalised) free fields in curved spacetime

    We prove that the singularity structure of all n-point distributions of a state of a generalised real free scalar field in curved spacetime can be estimated if the two-point distribution is of Hadamard form. In particular this applies to the real free scalar field and the result has applications in perturbative quantum field theory, showing that the class of all Hadamard states is the state space of interest. In our proof we assume that the field is a generalised free field, i.e. that it satisies scalar (c-number) commutation relations, but it need not satisfy an equation of motion. The same argument also works for anti-commutation relations and it can be generalised to vector-valued fields. To indicate the strengths and limitations of our assumption we also prove the analogues of a theorem by Borchers and Zimmermann on the self-adjointness of field operators and of a very weak form of the Jost-Schroer theorem. The original proofs of these results in the Wightman framework make use of analytic continuation arguments. In our case no analyticity is assumed, but to some extent the scalar commutation relations can take its place.Comment: 18 page

    Isospin Effects on Strangeness in Heavy-Ion Collisions

    Kaon properties are studied within the framework of a fully covariant transport approach. The kaon-nucleon potential is evaluated in two schemes, a chiral perturbative approach and an effective One-Boson-Exchange model. Isospin effects are explicitly accounted for in both models. The transport calculations indicate a significant sensitivity of momentum distributions and total yields of K0,+K^{0,+} isospin states on the choice of the kaon-nucleon interaction. Furthermore, isospin effects are rather moderate on absolute kaon yields, but appear on strangeness ratios. This is an important issue in determining the high density symmetry energy from studies of strangeness production in heavy-ion collisions.Comment: 15 papes, 5 figures.     Quantum-fluctuation-induced collisions and subsequent excitation gap of an elastic string between walls

    An elastic string embedded between rigid walls is simulated by means of the density-matrix renormalization group. The string collides against the walls owing to the quantum-mechanical zero-point fluctuations. Such ``quantum entropic'' interaction has come under thorough theoretical investigation in the context of the stripe phase observed experimentally in doped cuprates. We found that the excitation gap opens in the form of exponential singularity DeltaE ~ exp(-Ad^sigma) (d: wall spacing) with the exponent sigma =0.6(3), which is substantially smaller than the meanfield value sigma=2. That is, the excitation gap is much larger than that anticipated from meanfield, suggesting that the string is subjected to robust pinning potential due to the quantum collisions. This feature supports Zaanen's ``order out of disorder'' mechanism which would be responsible to the stabilization of the stripe phase

    Flux-lattice melting in two-dimensional disordered superconductors

    The flux line lattice melting transition in two-dimensional pure and disordered superconductors is studied by a Monte Carlo simulation using the lowest Landau level approximation and quasi-periodic boundary condition on a plane. The position of the melting line was determined from the diffraction pattern of the superconducting order parameter. In the clean case we confirmed the results from earlier studies which show the existence of a quasi-long range ordered vortex lattice at low temperatures. Adding frozen disorder to the system the melting transition line is shifted to slightly lower fields. The correlations of the order parameter for translational long range order of the vortex positions seem to decay slightly faster than a power law (in agreement with the theory of Carpentier and Le Doussal) although a simple power law decay cannot be excluded. The corresponding positional glass correlation function decays as a power law establishing the existence of a quasi-long range ordered positional glass formed by the vortices. The correlation function characterizing a phase coherent vortex glass decays however exponentially ruling out the possible existence of a phase coherent vortex glass phase.Comment: 12 pages, 21 figures, final version to appear in Phys.     Possible implications of the channeling effect in NaI(Tl) crystals

    The channeling effect of low energy ions along the crystallographic axes and planes of NaI(Tl) crystals is discussed in the framework of corollary investigations on WIMP Dark Matter candidates. In fact, the modeling of this existing effect implies a more complex evaluation of the luminosity yield for low energy recoiling Na and I ions.     Recent developments in planet migration theory

    Planetary migration is the process by which a forming planet undergoes a drift of its semi-major axis caused by the tidal interaction with its parent protoplanetary disc. One of the key quantities to assess the migration of embedded planets is the tidal torque between the disc and planet, which has two components: the Lindblad torque and the corotation torque. We review the latest results on both torque components for planets on circular orbits, with a special emphasis on the various processes that give rise to additional, large components of the corotation torque, and those contributing to the saturation of this torque. These additional components of the corotation torque could help address the shortcomings that have recently been exposed by models of planet population syntheses. We also review recent results concerning the migration of giant planets that carve gaps in the disc (type II migration) and the migration of sub-giant planets that open partial gaps in massive discs (type III migration).Comment: 52 pages, 18 figures.
