Avian lens spectrin: subunit composition compared with erythrocyte and brain spectrin

    Get PDF
Chicken lens spectrin is composed predominantly of equimolar amounts of two polypeptides with solubility properties similar, but not identical, to erythrocyte spectrin. The larger polypeptide, Mr 240,000 (lens alpha- spectrin), co-migrates with erythrocyte and brain alpha-spectrin on one- and two-dimensional SDS polyacrylamide gels and cross-reacts with antibodies specific for chicken erythrocyte alpha-spectrin; the smaller polypeptide, Mr 235,000 (lens gamma-spectrin), co-migrates with brain gamma-spectrin and does not cross-react with either the alpha-spectrin antibodies specific for chicken erythrocyte beta-spectrin. Minor amounts of polypeptides antigenically related to erythrocyte beta- spectrin with a greater electrophoretic mobility than lens gamma- spectrin are also detected in lens. The equimolar ratio of lens alpha- and gamma-spectrin is invariantly maintained during the extraction of lens plasma membranes under different conditions, or after immunoprecipitation of whole extracts of lens with erythrocyte alpha- spectrin antibodies. Two-dimensional peptide mapping reveals that whereas alpha-spectrins from chicken erythrocytes, brain, and lens are highly homologous, the gamma-spectrins, although related, have some cell-type-specific peptides and are substantially different from erythrocyte beta-spectrin. Thus, the expression of cell-type-specific gamma- and beta-spectrins may be the basis for the assembly of a spectrin-plasma membrane complex whose molecular composition is tailored to the functional requirements of the particular cell-type

The Deinking and Bleaching of Pulp Produced from Household Wastes

One of the problems that Americans have had to continually deal with is what to do with household and municipal wastes. The National Center for Resource Recovery in New Orleans has partially solved this problem by recycling usable materials from the garbage. At the present time, they are recycling iron, glass, aluminum, and other non-ferrous metals. They are also separating out approximately 350 tons per day of paper fiber. This study was designed to try and clean up that fiber, so that it could be sold as usable fiber. A garage pulp was synthesized in the recycling plant at Western Michigan University. It was run through screens and cleaners before being deinked. The final pulp was then bleached using four different bleaching sequences. The most interesting results of this work came in the cooking stage. All forms of plastic attracted and retained ink particles. Because of this, the final unbleached pulp was very clean and had a brightness of 43.7. The best bleaching process was a 1.2%-1.2% peroxide-hydrosulfite type. This gave a final brightness of 54.5. The pulp was deinked using two different methods. These were sidehill washing and flotation cell deinking. A Clark classification showed that the amount of fines in the flotation cell stock was much higher than the amount in the sidehill stock. This led to large differences in strength tests

Restitution - Constructive Trusts - Family Arrangements With Respect to Land Entered Into by Oral Trust

    Get PDF
A mother, desiring to divide real property among five children, conveyed two of five shares by separate deeds to her daughter, Edith. Although no instructions were written, it was intended that Edith hold one share for her brother, John, who was mentally ill. Edith had no knowledge of the deed to this share at the time, as it was held by another brother, although the deed of her share was delivered to her. It does not appear when Edith first learned of the deed or the trust. When John died she was told of the deed by her other brother, but she refused to convey John\u27s share to his widow and only son as requested. In an action by the widow and son against Edith, the trial chancellor imposed constructive trust relief in their favor. On appeal, held, affirmed. Chancery will not permit Edith to enrich herself at the expense of others. Kent v. Klein, 352 Mich. 652, 91 N.W. (2d) 11 (1958)

Supplemental greenhouse lighting: Return on Investment for LED and HPS fixtures

    Get PDF
LED fixtures are being marketed as a replacement for high pressure sodium fixtures in greenhouse lighting. Here we compare the cost per photon for LED and HPS fixtures based on their ability to convert electrical energy into photons delivered to a horizontal surface below the fixture. Some LED fixtures now exceed the efficiency of the best HPS fixtures by 23%, but the initial capital cost per photon delivered is 5 to 10 times greater. HPS fixtures with electronic ballasts and optimized luminaires (reflectors) are 27% more efficient than widely-used HPS fixtures with magnetic ballasts. Our analysis, however, demonstrates that light distribution and radiation capture are more important than the electrical efficiency of the fixture. No single fixture is optimal for all applications. The lowest cost per photon is realized when an efficient fixture is coupled with effective radiation capture, but the value of uniform plants may outweigh the cost of wasted photons. Just as precision irrigation can improve water use efficiency, precision lighting can improve electrical use efficiency

A Survey of Graduate Education in Community Psychology in Canada

    Get PDF
A national survey was conducted to determine current opportunities for graduate education in community psychology in Canada. The results show expanded offerings for academic and field work education in community psychology in the past decade. Also, faculty perceptions of the goals, activities, and adequacy of training in community psychology were obtained. Finally, similarities and differences between graduate education in community psychology in Canada and the U.S. are noted. Issues related to the development of community psychology in Canada are discussed
