Hydrologic and Temperature Regime Influence on Growth and Recruitment of Fishes in an Upper Midwest Riverine Ecosystem

The natural flow regime is often identified as the primary driver of ecological integrity in rivers. The Minnesota River basin is characterized by a row-crop agricultural landscape with an extensive network of drainage tiles and ditches to improve land productivity. Intensive surface and subsurface drainage alters flow regimes, increasing the magnitude and frequency of high flows. Changes in river hydrology lead to alterations in geomorphology, including increased bank erosion, channel widening, and downward incision that can lead to floodplain disconnection. Disruption of historical hydrology can alter energy flow and connection to specialized habitats subsequently affecting important aquatic communities and populations valued by humans. To conceptualize flow regimes, three concepts are of interest: 1) the flood pulse, 2) low flow recruitment, and 3) intermediate flow concepts, all of which differ by flow magnitude, timing, and duration. Therefore, the objective of this research was to assess growth and recruitment of selected fishes in relation to various flow and temperature regimes defined by riverine concepts to determine the applicability of each concept to the Minnesota River from 2001-2011. Variation in fish growth was obtained from linear mixed models. Recruitment was assessed using catch-curve regression. To test relationships of fish growth and recruitment in relation to hydrology and temperature, linear regression was used. Dependent variables included growth-year effects from mixed models and residuals from catch curves. Independent variables included a variety of flow and temperature parameters used to define each riverine concept. Results indicated the importance of backwater and active floodplain connections to Minnesota River fish growth and recruitment. In particular, backwater connection duration coupled with optimal growing temperature was the top-ranking model for Channel Catfish Ictalurus punctatus, Flathead Catfish Pylodictis olivaris, and Freshwater Drum Aplodinotus grunniens. Active floodplain connection duration parameters and combinations of other flow magnitudes were important for Channel Catfish, Walleye Sander vitreus, and Freshwater Drum. To some extent, every riverine concept or flow threshold was beneficial for at least one species, suggesting that a natural flow regime (i.e., with variation) should be maintained. Backwater and active floodplain connections were important to many fishes, therefore, maintaining and restoring these connections should be a high priority for Minnesota River managers

Limitations of the Millennium Development Goals: a literature review

With the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) showing uneven progress, this review identifies possible limitations arising from the MDG framework itself rather than extrinsic issues. A multidisciplinary literature review was conducted with a focus on limitations in the formulation of the MDGs, their structure, content and implementation. Of 1837 MDG-related articles, 90 met criteria for analysis. Articles describe MDGs as being created by only a few stakeholders without adequate involvement by developing countries and overlooking development objectives previously agreed upon. Others claim MDGs are unachievable and simplistic, not adapted to national needs, do not specify accountable parties and reinforce vertical interventions. While MDGs have promoted increased health and well-being in many countries by recognising and deliberating on the possible constraints of the MDG framework, the post-2015 agenda may have even greater impact. Values and Wellness as Related to a Positive School Orientation among Japanese Adolescents

The relationship between positive school orientation and the psychological factors of values and wellness were examined in a sample of 319 Japanese middle school students. Participants’ perceptions of wellness were consistently related to a reported sense of school bonding, but not necessarily to attendance or participation in extracurricular activities. The relationship between values and positive school orientation was less clear; values appeared to be more aligned with voluntary actions such as participation in extracurricular activities. Gender differences in student values were noted in that males placed more emphasis on extracurricular activities, while females placed more emphasis on attendance. The Association Between Student Wellness and Student Engagement in School

School engagement has been identified as an important construct associated with student achievement, school completion, and more recently, student well-being. The present study included data from 200 ninth grade students of diverse ethnic groups (African American, Hispanic, & White) to explore dimensions of student wellness and their association with student engagement in school. Adolescents completed the Child and Adolescent Wellness Scale (CAWS) and the Student Engagement in School Questionnaire (SEQ). Results revealed that students viewed themselves positively on both measures, the two measures demonstrated adequate internal consistency, and all 10 dimensions of the CAWS were significantly related to student engagement in school. The current study provides support for dimensions of wellness contributing to measured student engagement in school, and discusses the potential of wellness concepts contributing to school mental health

Pediatric Refugee Health Care Delivery in the Community Setting: An Educational Workshop for Multidisciplinary Family-Centered Care During Resettlement

Introduction: With 70.8 million people displaced worldwide, there is an increasing need for medical professionals to provide medical care to refugees. Insufficient training on refugee health poses a barrier to effective care delivery. Methods: This workshop addressed common challenges in providing family-centered pediatric refugee care in community settings as well as barriers related to policy changes. Presentations covered prearrival experiences, medical screening, and trauma-based care. In small groups, participants discussed cases that featured medical, behavioral health, social, and cultural factors impacting the provision of family-centered pediatric care that was culturally respectful and included shared decision-making. After the breakout session, each small group informed the larger group of topics discussed. Facilitators identified themes and reinforced key learning points. At the workshop\u27s conclusion, participants were guided to create their own personalized action plan. Results: This workshop was presented at two international conferences to more than 47 participants, including clinicians, nurse practitioners, pediatric residents, and medical students. Evaluations were completed by 34 individuals. Participants\u27 overall comfort level with taking care of refugee patients increased from 3.3 to 4.0 (on a 5-point scale, p = .24) during the 3-hour version of the workshop and from 3.8 to 4.0 (p = .43) in the 1-hour version of the workshop. Mean overall ratings of the 3- and 1-hour workshop versions on conference-administered evaluations were 4.8 and 4.2, respectively, on a 5-point scale. Discussions: This workshop was well received and equipped participants with knowledge, tools, and strategies regarding pediatric refugee health in a community setting
