The history of child photography
ThesisAfter minimum consideration, I have decided to specialize in Child Photography.
I have come to this conclusion through the fact that I have always loved children,
and I can spend hours watching their every move. I recently became a mother
myself, and there is few things that is more satisfying than capturing a special
moment on film and knowing that I can treasure it forever. I also find it very
rewarding capturing an image of a child that represents their character. This can
only be achieved through natural child photography, which is the way I prefer it.
I also believe I have the patience to work with children, which will probably come
in handy. I have done research on the History of Photography as a whole, as well
as on the History of Child Photographers. I will start with photography as a
whole and later elaborate on the photographers
World Rabies Day - a decade of raising awareness
World Rabies Day was set up in 2007 to raise global awareness about rabies, to provide information on how to prevent the disease in at-risk communities and support advocacy for increased efforts in rabies control. It is held annually on September 28th, with events, media outreach and other initiatives carried out by individuals, professionals, organisations and governments from the local to the international level. The Global Alliance for Rabies Control coordinates World Rabies Day, amplifying the campaign's reach through the provision of a central event platform and resources to support events across the world, the promotion of messages through key rabies stakeholders, and the implementation of specific activities to highlight particular issues. Over the last decade, more than 1,700 registered events have been held across the world and shared with others in the global rabies community. Events in canine rabies endemic countries, particularly in Africa and Asia, have increased over time. Beyond the individual events, World Rabies Day has gained the support of governments and international agencies that recognise its value in supporting existing rabies control initiatives and advocating for improvements. As the rabies landscape has changed, World Rabies Day remains a general day of awareness but has also become an integral part of national, regional and global rabies elimination strategies. The global adoption of 2030 as the goal for the elimination of rabies as a public health threat has led to even greater opportunities for World Rabies Day to make a sustainable impact on rabies, by bringing the attention of policy makers and donors to the ongoing situation and elimination efforts in rabies-endemic countries
Difficulties in estimating the human burden of canine rabies
Current passive surveillance data for canine rabies, particularly for the regions where the burden is highest, are inadequate for appropriate decision making on control efforts. Poor enforcement of existing legislation and poor implementation of international guidance reduce the effectiveness of surveillance systems, but another set of problems relates to the fact that canine rabies is an untreatable condition which affects very poor sectors of society. This results in an unknown, but potentially large proportion of rabies victims dying outside the health system, deaths that are unlikely to be recorded by surveillance systems based on health center records. This article critically evaluates the potential sources of information on the number of human deaths attributable to canine rabies, and how we might improve the estimates required to move towards the goal of global canine rabies elimination
The Role of Dog Population Management in Rabies Elimination—A Review of Current Approaches and Future Opportunities
Free-roaming dogs and rabies transmission are integrally linked across many low income countries, and large unmanaged dog populations can be daunting to rabies control program planners. Dog population management (DPM) is a multifaceted concept that aims to improve the health and well-being of free-roaming dogs, reduce problems they may cause, and may also aim to reduce dog population size. In theory, DPM can facilitate more effective rabies control. Community engagement focused on promoting responsible dog ownership and better veterinary care could improve the health of individual animals and dog vaccination coverage, thus reducing rabies transmission. Humane DPM tools, such as sterilization, could theoretically reduce dog population turnover and size, allowing rabies vaccination coverage to be maintained more easily. However, it is important to understand local dog populations and community attitudes toward them in order to determine whether and how DPM might contribute to rabies control and which DPM tools would be most successful. In practice, there is very limited evidence of DPM tools achieving reductions in the size or turnover of dog populations in canine rabies-endemic areas. Different DPM tools are frequently used together and combined with rabies vaccinations, but full impact assessments of DPM programs are not usually available, and therefore, evaluation of tools is difficult. Surgical sterilization is the most frequently documented tool and has successfully reduced dog population size and turnover in a few low-income settings. However, DPM programs are mostly conducted in urban settings and are usually not government funded, raising concerns about their applicability in rural settings and sustainability over time. Technical demands, costs, and the time necessary to achieve population-level impacts are major barriers. Given their potential value, we urgently need more evidence of the effectiveness of DPM tools in the context of canine rabies control. Cheaper, less labor-intensive tools for dog sterilization will be extremely valuable in realizing the potential benefits of reduced population turnover and size. No one DPM tool will fit all situations, but if DPM objectives are achieved dog populations may be stabilized or even reduced, facilitating higher dog vaccination coverages that will benefit rabies elimination efforts
Agreement between measured height, and height predicted from ulna length, in adult patients in Bloemfontein, South Africa
Objective: To assess the agreement between measured height, and height predicted from ulna length using the Malnutrition Universal Screening Tool (MUST) equations, in adult patients admitted to government hospitals in Bloemfontein, South Africa.Design: Descriptive cross-sectional survey.Setting: Medical, surgical, pulmonary, orthopaedic, cardiovascular and general wards at Pelonomi, Universitas and National Hospitals in Bloemfontein.Subjects: All patients between 19 and 60 years, admitted during a two-week period in March 2015, who gave written informed consent, and were able to stand upright and unassisted, were included.Outcome measures: Standing height (via stadiometer; referred to as reference height), weight and ulna length were measured. Predicted height and body mass index (BMI) were calculated from ulna length using MUST equations, and compared with reference height and BMI by 95% confidence intervals (CI) and Bland–Altman analysis.Results: The sample comprised n = 200 participants (48% female; median age: 42 years: 32–51 years). The median height estimated from ulna length (170.2 cm; range: 154.2–213.0 cm) was statistically significantly (95% CI [7.1; 7.7]) longer than the median reference height (163.9 cm; range: 145.1–188.4 cm). The Bland–Altman analysis indicated that the 95% limits of agreement between the two methods ranged from –19.8 to 5.7 cm. Median BMI based on estimated height (20.1 kg/m2) was significantly (95% CI [–1.9; –1.6]) lower than median BMI calculated from reference height (21.8 kg/m2).Conclusion: Height predicted from ulna length with the MUST equations overestimated height in this population. This may be related to high prevalence of stunting in the South African population. The discrepancy may have clinical implications particularly for critically ill patients.Strong message: Estimations of height based on upper body long-bone measurements may not be reliable in populations with a high prevalence of stunting.Keywords: standing height, predicted height, ulna length, MUST equations, stuntin
Can voicing conflict within experiential learning groups facilitate connection? : Building and developing effective multi-disciplinary team-working skills

Embargo end date: 24 May 2018.In the UK, Clinical Psychologists (CPs) work in a variety of settings within the National Health Service (NHS), often within Multi-Disciplinary Teams (MDTs). Problem-Based Learning (PBL) within CP training at the University of Hertfordshire (UH) offers unique opportunities to combine scientist-practitioner and reflective-practitioner models to learn about group dynamics from the personal experience of working within an experiential learning group. Further, given Trainees work three days per week on placement within MDTs in the NHS, the learning gained within a ‘safer’ PBL context can be utilised within these clinical settings. For two years, Trainees at UH have to work in small PBL groups with five or six members learning to work together to achieve a goal (four assessed presentations) negotiating their own personal and professional journey, as well as a group journey. Consequently, PBL offers trainees opportunities to learn (1) how individuals work within a group; (2) how personal experiences influence this process; (3) how others influence them and are influenced by them; and (4) how a group of diverse individuals conceptualise, understand and convey case vignettes to an audience. Within these groups, many Trainees learn to speak out, reflect, listen attentively, empathise, validate and accept diverse experiences. Further, when differences dominate they often learn to negotiate these, finding a way to maintain effective team working in order to complete the presentation. Focusing on the conflict that can occur within (any) group, this paper explores themes from the reflective narratives of six trainees: parallels and differences between MDTs and PBL groups, striving for and achieving authenticity; and conflict as a ‘swear’ word. We conclude that exploring the role PBL can play in training individuals to work effectively in teams may be of benefit within the training of other professional groups.Peer reviewedFinal Accepted Versio
Fatal Human Infection with Rabies-related Duvenhage Virus, South Africa
Duvenhage virus was isolated from a patient who died of a rabieslike disease after being scratched by a bat early in 2006. This occurred ≈80 km from the site where the only other known human infection with the virus had occurred 36 years earlier
Statistical assessment of reliability of anthropometric measurements in the multi-site South African National Dietary Intake Survey 2022

Anthropometric data quality in large multicentre nutrition surveys is seldom adequately assessed. In preparation for the South African National Dietary Intake Survey (NDIS-2022), this study assessed site leads’ and fieldworkers’ intra- and inter-rater reliability for measuring weight, length/height, mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC), waist circumference (WC) and calf circumference (CC).
METHODS :
Standardised training materials and measurement protocols were developed, and new anthropometric equipment was procured. Following two training rounds (12 site lead teams, 46 fieldworker teams), measurement reliability was assessed for both groups, using repeated measurements of volunteers similar to the survey target population. Reliability was statistically assessed using the technical error of measurement (TEM), relative TEM (%TEM), intra-class correlation coefficient (ICC) and coefficient of reliability (R). Agreement was visualised with Bland-Altman analysis.
RESULTS :
By %TEM, the best reliability was achieved for weight (%TEM = 0.260–0.923) and length/height (%TEM = 0.434–0.855), and the poorest for MUAC by fieldworkers (%TEM = 2.592–3.199) and WC (%TEM = 2.353–2.945). Whole-sample ICC and R were excellent ( > 0.90) for all parameters except site leads’ CC inter-rater reliability (ICC = 0.896, R = 0.889) and fieldworkers’ inter-rater reliability for MUAC in children under two (ICC = 0.851, R = 0.881). Bland-Altman analysis revealed no significant bias except in fieldworkers’ intra-rater reliability of length/height measurement in adolescents/adults ( + 0.220 (0.042, 0.400) cm). Reliability was higher for site leads vs. fieldworkers, for intra-rater vs. inter-rater assessment, and for weight and length/height vs. circumference measurements.
CONCLUSION :
NDIS-2022 site leads and fieldworkers displayed acceptable reliability in performing anthropometric measurements, highlighting the importance of intensive training and standardised measurement protocols. Ongoing reliability assessment during data collection is recommended.The NDIS-2022 was funded by the South African Department of Health. Developmental dyslexia in selected South African schools : parent perspectives on management
BACKGROUND : South Africa has a dearth of research regarding the management of children with dyslexia (CWD), which could be exacerbated by the apparent lack of parental support. South Africa has a unique educational, linguistic and socio-economic context; thus, more specific investigations were warranted into the perspectives and needs of parents and caregivers of CWD in South Africa AIM : To determine the parental perspectives of the management of their CWD in South African schools SETTING : An online research survey was sent to South African parents with a CWD METHODS : A descriptive, embedded design, including both qualitative and quantitative aspects, was implemented. The study was cross-sectional in nature. Stratified sampling was used in which the participants were divided into two separate strata RESULTS : Results indicated that most parents of CWD had good knowledge regarding dyslexia in South Africa. Most parents with CWD had difficulty with the social stigma surrounding the disorder. Furthermore, parents were aware of their role in their CWD's education; however, a lack of resources was evident in South Africa leading to poor parental experiences CONCLUSION : There is a lack of resources and access to appropriate services such as multisensory teaching methods and accommodations in South Africa. Parents of CWD therefore did not receive enough support in the management of their child's dyslexia. Future research should be conducted regarding South African teachers' knowledge and perspectives regarding dyslexia and the management thereof. Estimating the global burden of endemic canine rabies
Background: Rabies is a notoriously underreported and neglected disease of lowincome
countries. This study aims to estimate the public health and economic burden
of rabies circulating in domestic dog populations, globally and on a country-by-country
basis, allowing an objective assessment of how much this preventable disease costs
endemic countries.<p></p>
Methodology/Principal Findings: We established relationships between rabies mortality
and rabies prevention and control measures, which we incorporated into a model
framework. We used data derived from extensive literature searches and
questionnaires on disease incidence, control interventions and preventative measures
within this framework to estimate the disease burden. The burden of rabies impacts on
public health sector budgets, local communities and livestock economies, with the
highest risk of rabies in the poorest regions of the world. This study estimates that
globally canine rabies causes approximately 59,000 (95% Confidence Intervals: 25-
159,000) human deaths, over 3.7 million (95% CIs: 1.6-10.4 million) disability-adjusted
life years (DALYs) and 8.6 billion USD (95% CIs: 2.9-21.5 billion) economic losses
annually. The largest component of the economic burden is due to premature death
(55%), followed by direct costs of post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP, 20%) and lost
income whilst seeking PEP (15.5%), with only limited costs to the veterinary sector due
to dog vaccination (1.5%), and additional costs to communities from livestock losses
(6%).<p></p>
Conclusions/Significance: This study demonstrates that investment in dog vaccination,
the single most effective way of reducing the disease burden, has been inadequate
and that the availability and affordability of PEP needs improving. Collaborative
investments by medical and veterinary sectors could dramatically reduce the current
large, and unnecessary, burden of rabies on affected communities. Improved
surveillance is needed to reduce uncertainty in burden estimates and to monitor the
impacts of control efforts.<p></p>
