Why did you choose those readings? A case study in text selection for first year university students
This paper evaluates the reading and vocabulary demands in five texts used in a first-Âyear undergraduate paper in hospitality management at a multicultural university in New Zealand. There were two research perspectives: the students and the teaching materials. The student perspective investigated the length of time that students have studied in English language environments and their English-Âlanguage reading abilities; and how this may impact on a student's evaluation of selected texts and student reading time. The second perspective evaluated vocabulary frequency using an electronic vocabulary tool, the Vocabprofile. The two sets of data were then compared. The results revealed that self-Âassessed reading ability in English related to student first language abilities, and demonstrated that the Vocabprofile can benefit text selection (Laufer & Nation, 1995;; Meara, 1993; Meara & Fitzpatrick 2000;; Meara, Lightbrown, & Halter, 1997) as well as provide a knowledge base for lecturers scaffolding reading materials. As student vocabulary skills and reading comprehension levels impact on subsequent academic success (Scarcella & Zimmerman, 1998), the comprehensive results of this research will find ready application within the social sciences and more qualitatively focussed domains of student study
Charge Exchange Spectra of Hydrogenic and He-like Iron
We present H-like Fe XXVI and He-like Fe XXV charge-exchange spectra
resulting from collisions of highly charged iron with N2 gas at an energy of 10
eV/amu in an electron beam ion trap. Although individual high-n emission lines
are not resolved in our measurements, we observe that the most likely level for
Fe25+ --> Fe24+ electron capture is n~9, in line with expectations, while the
most likely value for Fe26+ --> Fe25+ charge exchange is significantly higher.
In the Fe XXV spectrum, the K-alpha emission feature dominates, whether
produced via charge exchange or collisional excitation. The K-alpha centroid is
lower in energy for the former case than the latter (6666 versus 6685 eV,
respectively), as expected because of the strong enhancement of emission from
the forbidden and intercombination lines, relative to the resonance line, in
charge-exchange spectra. In contrast, the Fe XXVI high-n Lyman lines have a
summed intensity greater than that of Ly-alpha, and are substantially stronger
than predicted from theoretical calculations of charge exchange with atomic H.
We conclude that the angular momentum distribution resulting from electron
capture using a multi-electron target gas is significantly different from that
obtained with H, resulting in the observed high-n enhancement. A discussion is
presented of the relevance of our results to studies of diffuse Fe emission in

Preparing the foundations for video-based, practice-placement support: establishing the role from a studentsâ perspective
Currently, many placement-based health programme students within the UK are supported through face-to-face visits from university staff. Whilst cited in literature as being of value, the face-to-face nature of this contact is not supported. Alternatives including video-based communications methods offer the potential for cost effective, environmentally responsible support. However, in order to establish the fitness for purpose of alternative approaches, the content and purpose of current support needs to be understood. This project aimed to investigate student perceptions of the ideal content and purpose of clinical support visits, and alternatives to the current face-to-face approach. Fifty-six Physiotherapy undergraduate students responded to questionnaires with a further nine participating in a follow-up focus group. Participants emphasised the value of the visit in guiding learning, ensuring progression and resolving arising issues, and highlighted concerns over alternative approaches. Focus group participants discussed the importance of personal and professional confidence in directing requirements for support, and went on to propose a menu of options for methods of communication.Whilst limited in some applications, video technologies may be one of the options. Overall, however, this project supports the need for consideration of individualised learning journeys within curriculum planning
The use of ICT in the assessment of modern languages: the English context and European viewpoints
The ever increasing explosion of highly attractive multimedia resources on offer has boosted the use of information and communication technology (ICT) in the teaching and learning of modern languages. The use of ICT to assess languages is less frequent, however, although online testing is starting to develop. This paper examines the national context for the assessment of modern foreign language proficiency in England, outlines the kinds of assessment currently available and the development of electronic forms of assessment and compares the above with the survey results of a European Union (EU) funded project on current good practice in online assessment of languages in other European countries. The findings indicate that speaking is inadequately served by online testing as tests currently focus primarily on receptive language skills. The implications for future successful online testing include the incorporation of interactive skills and effective formative feedback
Feedback from activity trackers improves daily step count after knee and hip arthroplasty: A randomized controlled trial
Background: Commercial wrist-worn activity monitors have the potential to accurately assess activity levels and are being increasingly adopted in the general population. The aim of this study was to determine if feedback from a commercial activity monitor improves activity levels over the first 6 weeks after total hip arthroplasty (THA) or total knee arthroplasty (TKA).
Methods: One hundred sixty-three consecutive subjects undergoing primary TKA or THAwere randomized into 2 groups. Subjects received an activity tracker with the step display obscured 2 weeks before surgery and completed patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs). On day 1 after surgery, participants were randomized to either the âfeedback (FB) groupâ or the âno feedback (NFB) group.â The FB group was able to view their daily step count and was given a daily step goal. Participants in the NFB group wore the device with the display obscured for 2 weeks after surgery, after which time they were also able to see their daily step count but did not receive a formal step goal. The mean daily steps at 1, 2, 6 weeks, and 6 months were monitored. At 6 months after surgery, subjects repeated PROMs and daily step count collection.
Results: Of the 163 subjects, 95 underwent THA and 68 underwent TKA. FB subjects had a significantly higher (P \u3c .03) mean daily step count by 43% in week 1, 33% in week 2, 21% in week 6, and 17% at 6 months, compared with NFB. The FB subjects were 1.7 times more likely to achieve a mean 7000 steps per day than the NFB subjects at 6 weeks after surgery (P Œ .02). There was no significant difference between the groups in PROMs at 6 months. Ninety percent of FB and 83% of NFB participants reported that they were satisfied with the results of the surgery (P Œ .08). At 6 months after surgery, 70% of subjects had a greater mean daily step count compared with their preoperative level.
Conclusion: Subjects who received feedback from a commercial activity tracker with a daily step goal had significantly higher activity levels after hip and knee arthroplasty over 6 weeks and 6 months, compared with subjects who did not receive feedback in a randomized controlled trial. Commercial activity trackers may be a useful and effective adjunct after arthroplasty
Correlations in Two-Dimensional Vortex Liquids
We report on a high temperature perturbation expansion study of the
superfluid-density spatial correlation function of a Ginzburg-Landau-model
superconducting film in a magnetic field. We have derived a closed form which
expresses the contribution to the correlation function from each graph of the
perturbation theory in terms of the number of Euler paths around appropriate
subgraphs. We have enumerated all graphs appearing out to 10-th order in the
expansion and have evaluated their contributions to the correlation function.
Low temperature correlation functions, obtained using Pad\'{e} approximants,
are in good agreement with Monte Carlo simulation results and show that the
vortex-liquid becomes strongly correlated at temperatures well above the vortex

Detecting Bose-Einstein condensation of exciton-polaritons via electron transport
We examine the Bose-Einstein condensation of exciton-polaritons in a
semiconductor microcavity via an electrical current. We propose that by
embedding a quantum dot p-i-n junction inside the cavity, the tunneling current
through the device can reveal features of condensation due to a one-to-one
correspondence of the photons to the condensate polaritons. Such a device can
also be used to observe the phase interference of the order parameters from two

Case Notes
For decades, optical time-domain searches have been tuned to find ordinary supernovae, which rise and fall in brightness over a period of weeks. Recently, supernova searches have improved their cadences and a handful of fast-evolving luminous transients have been identified(1-5). These have peak luminosities comparable to type Ia supernovae, but rise to maximum in less than ten days and fade from view in less than one month. Here we present the most extreme example of this class of object thus far: KSN 2015K, with a rise time of only 2.2 days and a time above half-maximum of only 6.8 days. We show that, unlike type Ia supernovae, the light curve of KSN 2015K was not powered by the decay of radioactive elements. We further argue that it is unlikely that it was powered by continuing energy deposition from a central remnant (a magnetar or black hole). Using numerical radiation hydrodynamical models, we show that the light curve of KSN 2015K is well fitted by a model where the supernova runs into external material presumably expelled in a pre-supernova mass-loss episode. The rapid rise of KSN 2015K therefore probes the venting of photons when a hypersonic shock wave breaks out of a dense extended medium.NASA

The Beta Problem: A Study of Abell 262
We present an investigation of the dynamical state of the cluster A262.
Existing optical line of sight velocities for select cluster galaxies have been
augmented by new data obtained with the Automated Multi-Object Spectrograph at
Lick Observatory. We find evidence for a virialized early-type population
distinct from a late-type population infalling from the Pisces-Perseus
supercluster ridge. We also report on a tertiary population of low luminosity
galaxies whose velocity dispersion distinguishes them from both the early and
late-type galaxies. We supplement our investigation with an analysis of
archival X-ray data. A temperature is determined using ASCA GIS data and a gas
profile is derived from ROSAT HRI data. The increased statistics of our sample
results in a picture of A262 with significant differences from earlier work. A
previously proposed solution to the "beta-problem" in A262 in which the gas
temperature is significantly higher than the galaxy temperature is shown to
result from using too low a velocity dispersion for the early-type galaxies.
Our data present a consistent picture of A262 in which there is no
"beta-problem", and the gas and galaxy temperature are roughly comparable.
There is no longer any requirement for extensive galaxy-gas feedback to
drastically overheat the gas with respect to the galaxies. We also demonstrate
that entropy-floor models can explain the recent discovery that the beta values
