Prosody, polyphony and politeness: A polyphonic approach to prosodic configurations common to French and Spanish

From a theoretical perspective based on the Theory of Argumentation in Language (Théorie de l’Argumentation dans la Langue – TAL) and the Theory of Polyphony (Théorie de la Polyphonie Énonciative – TPE), the present study describes and analyses polyphonic configurations that are disclosed through the use of certain voice traits; configurations which, unmistakably common to both French and Spanish, are manifested by what is said and what is prosodically shown in utterances. Within a French corpus and a Spanish corpus of naturally occurring discourse, the patent polyphonic dimension of intonation has been explored in order to demonstrate that locutors’ utterances themselves reveal the orientation of enunciation through both the marking of the lexical and grammatical components and the prosody within which they are embedded. Through this study, the authors show how the locutor – the discursive character presented by the utterance as responsible for its enunciation – puts on stage a multiplicity of enunciators, or viewpoints, which allow him or her to protect the image of self, i.e., the locutor’s own image, and expose, protect or enhance that of others. Polyphony is materialized in two different ways: one in which the enunciator embodied in the prosody reinforces the locutor’s assimilation to the wording of the utterance and another in which the enunciator corresponding to the intonational feature does not match what is expressed through words.Fil: Garcia Negroni, Maria Marta. NOD2 and inflammation: current insights

The nucleotide-binding oligomerization domain (NOD) protein, NOD2, belonging to the intracellular NOD-like receptor family, detects conserved motifs in bacterial peptidoglycan and promotes their clearance through activation of a proinflammatory transcriptional program and other innate immune pathways, including autophagy and endoplasmic reticulum stress. An inactive form due to mutations or a constitutive high expression of NOD2 is associated with several inflammatory diseases, suggesting that balanced NOD2 signaling is critical for the maintenance of immune homeostasis. In this review, we discuss recent developments about the pathway and mechanisms of regulation of NOD2 and illustrate the principal functions of the gene, with particular emphasis on its central role in maintaining the equilibrium between intestinal microbiota and host immune responses to control inflammation. Furthermore, we survey recent studies illustrating the role of NOD2 in several inflammatory diseases, in particular, inflammatory bowel disease, of which it is the main susceptibility gene

Polifonia, evidencialidade e refutação: significado evidencial da negação metadiscursiva e dos marcadores de refutação

A la luz del enfoque no referencialista de la significación y no unicista del sujeto propuesto por la teoría polifónica de la enunciación, en este trabajo, argumento acerca del carácter evidencial citativo tanto de la negación metadiscursiva como de ciertos marcadores de discurso que pueden aparecer en su remplazo. Se sostiene que las instrucciones de significación asociadas a ambas formas de descalificación exigen interpretar la enunciación que las contiene como desencadenada por un discurso al que se evoca con el fin de descalificarlo, cuestionarlo o rechazarlo y cuyo origen, siempre mostrado y no dicho ni explícitamente atribuido, debe hallarse en una enunciación ajena anterior.In light of non-referentialist semantic principles of enunciative polyphony, in this paper I will argue about the evidential quotative meaning contained both in metadiscursive negation as in the rejection discourse markers. It is shown that the semantic instructions associated to the meaning of these forms force to interpret the global enunciation as originated in a prior discourse which is evoked with the purpose to be disqualified o rejected.À luz dos princípios não referencialistas da significação e não unicistas do sujeito proposto pela teoria polifônica da enunciação, neste trabalho, eu argumento sobre o caráter evidencial de cita da negação metadiscursiva e de alguns marcadores de discurso que podem aparecer em seu lugar. From speaker’s intention to the polyphonic representation of the enunciation: on the boundaries of intention in the description of meaning

La noción de intención constituye un presupuesto epistemológico que está en la base de gran parte de las investigaciones pragmáticas actuales, según las cuales la descripción del sentido de una emisión se vincula estrechamente con la interpretación de las intenciones del sujeto hablante. Desde el enfoque polifónico de la enunciación que propone la pragmática integrada (Ducrot 1984), en este trabajo señalamos los límites del concepto de intención para la descripción semántico-pragmática. Con ese objetivo, revisamos distintas teorías clásicas y fundacionales para muchas de las investigaciones actuales (Searle 1969, 1975; Grice 1975; Sperber y Wilson 1986, 2004) que incorporan esta categoría en el análisis lingüístico. Como corolario, este trabajo pone de manifiesto las incompatibilidades teórico-metodológicas que surgen en los estudios semántico-pragmáticos cuando en ellos aparecen combinados, como si fueran complementarios, conceptos como los de intención, sujeto hablante, sentido literal, por un lado, y polifonía, locutor, punto de vista, por el otro, que suponen, en realidad, paradigmas y marcos teóricos irreconciliables.As can be observed in mainstream pragmatics, the notion of "intention” works as an epistemological precept fully entrenched in the description of the so-called “speaker’s meaning”. As known, for these approaches, linguistic meaning description is closely related to the interpretation of speaker ´s intentions. Against this theses and from a polyphonic approach to enunciation (Ducrot, 1984), the aim of this paper is to put on stage a discussion around the boundaries of the “intentionalist view” when describing meaning from a semantic-pragmatic perspective. Specifically, this paper highlights many of the theoretical and methodological inconsistencies that arise when categories involving irreconcilable theoretical frameworks, such as intention, speaker, literal meaning, on one hand, and polyphony, locutor, point of view, on the other, are juxtaposed in the linguistic analysis of meaning.Fil: Garcia Negroni, Maria Marta. Tenses and evidential points of view: Quotative uses of the future, the conditional and the imperfect

En este trabajo, y a la luz del Enfoque dialógico de la argumentación y de la polifonía, se analizan los empleos citativos del futuro (morfológico y perifrástico), del condicional (periodístico y científico) y del imperfecto. Según se argumenta, estos empleos vehiculizan ‘puntos de vista evidenciales’ que, en tanto tales, comportan instrucciones dialógico-causales que obligan a identificar la causa evidencial de la enunciación en la que se expresan en ‘marcos de discurso’ previos. Constituidos por encadenamientos argumentativos en los que una determinada representación discursiva de un decir evocado queda articulada normativa o transgresivamente con distintas aserciones respecto de ese decir, dichos marcos de discurso permiten explicar los distintos posicionamientos subjetivos plasmados en la enunciación. La aproximación al significado citativo del futuro morfológico, del futuro perifrástico, del condicional periodístico, del condicional científico y del imperfecto, que aquí se propone, permite explicar las propiedades que, en cada caso, reviste la enunciación (enunciación concesiva, refutativa, precavida y resguardada, distanciada, confiada pero prudente). Asimismo, permite dar cuenta de la imagen del decir que queda evocado en cada caso (como un decir plausible pero solo en parte acertado y justificado, como algo inadmisible, como un rumor que todavía no puede darse por cierto, como un decir calificado o como un decir confiable).Framed within the Dialogic Approach to Argumentation and Polyphony, this paper offers an analysis of the quotative uses of the future (morphological and periphrastic), the conditional (journalistic and scientific) and the imperfect. It will be contended that the uses studied convey ‘evidential points of view’, which, as such, carry dialogic-causal instructions that make the interpreter identify the evidential cause of the enunciation in a previous ‘discourse frame’. Discourse frames are constituted by argumentative sequences in which certain discursive representations of an evoked discourse are articulated normatively or transgressively with different assertions concerning that discourse. An analysis of discourse frames may account for the subjective positions evident in the enunciation. The proposed dialogic and argumentative approach to the quotative meaning of the morphological future, the periphrastic future, the journalistic conditional, the scientific conditional and the imperfect is instrumental to explain the diverse linguistic properties of the enunciation (concessive, refutative, careful and guarded, detached, trusting but cautious). By the same token, this approach can be applied to determine the image of the discourse that is evoked in each case (as a plausible saying but only partially correct and justified, as something inadmissible, as a rumor that cannot yet be taken for granted, as a qualified saying or as a reliable saying).Fil: Garcia Negroni, Maria Marta. Discurso político, contradestinación indirecta y puntos de vista evidenciales. La multidestinación en el discurso político revisitada

Tras señalar la necesidad de precisar las distintas modalidades del decir con que en el discurso político puede construirse al contradestinatario, en este trabajo, sostengo que la identificación de la figura del contradestinatario indirecto debe relacionarse con la puesta en escena de ciertos puntos de vista evidenciales citativos. A la luz del enfoque dialógico de la argumentación y de la polifonía enunciativa (Bajtín 1982, Ducrot 1984, García Negroni 2009a, 2016), propongo que las instrucciones asociadas a dichos puntos de vista evidenciales exigen interpretar la enunciación que los contiene como desencadenada por un marco de discurso que alude a un decir que se rechaza y cuyo origen –siempre mostrado y no dicho ni explícitamente atribuido en el enunciado– debe hallarse en una palabra ajena anterior. Para mostrarlo, analizo casos de negación metadiscursiva, de afirmación enfática refutativa y de incorporación burlona de discursos ajenos en un cuerpo de datos constituido por ejemplos reales, procedentes de discursos pronunciados por políticos argentinos.Tendo notado a necessidade de clarificar os diferentes modos de dizer em que o discurso político pode construir a figura do contradestinatário, neste artigo argumento que a identificação da figura do contradestinatário indireto deve relacionar-se com a representação de determinados pontos de vista evidenciais citativos. À luz da abordagem dialógica da argumentação e da polifonia enunciativa, proponho que as instruções semânticas associadas a esses pontos de vista evidenciais requerem interpretar o enunciado contendo-os como desencadeado por um marco do discurso que se refere a um discurso que é rejeitado e cujo origem -sempre mostrado e não dito explicitamentedeve estar em uma palavra passada de outro. Para testar essa hipótese, analiso negações metadiscursivas, afirmações enfáticas com valor negativo e enunciados irônicos, em um corpus de exemplos reais de discursos de políticos argentinos.After pointing out the need to describe the different ways by which political discourse can construct the representation of a counter-addressee, in this work I argue that the identification of the figure of an indirect counter-addressee should be related with the presence of quotative-evidential points of view at the level of the enunciation.In the light of the dialogic approach to argumentation and enunciative polyphony, I propose that the semantic instructions associated with those evidential points of view require interpreting the utterance containing them as triggered by a frame of speech that refers to a discourse that is rejected and whose origin –always shown and not explicitly said– must be found in that past discourse belonging to others.
