Physiological, behavioral and productive response of Alpine goats submitted to transportation
The aim of this work was to evaluate the physiological, productive and behavioral variations in Alpine goats during transportation. Twelve multiparous Alpine goats at late lactation period were used. Milk production, composition and somatic cells count, as well as the behavioral responses of goats during milking were measured in three time periods: three days before transportation, in the transportation day and three days after transportation. Also, blood samples were collected 120 min and 10 min before transportation and equal period after transportation for cortisol and glucose dosages. Among the behaviors studied during milking, only overstep and grooming were significantly changed by transportation. Significant increases were observed on glucose and cortisol levels 10 minutes after transportation. Glucose levels remained high until 120 minutes after transportation; however, cortisol presented similar level from before transportation until 120 minutes after transportation. Thus, in the present study, transportation with return to known facilities and to milking routine caused little physiologic and behavioral variations that did not decrease milk production, composition and somatic cell count
Central and peripheral oxytocin profiles during milking in ewes
The present work investigated the possible relationship between central and peripheral oxytocin (OT) release during milking in experimental ewes. Ten multiparous ewes were divided into four groups according to milk ejection stimuli: exclusive machine milking (EM), mixed-management milking and suckling, lambs separated during the night and reunited with their mother after morning milking (MMS); mixed-management with manual milking (MMM), and exclusive suckling (ES) lambs also separated during the night. Simultaneous sampling of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and blood was performed during milking. The means, standard deviations, variation coefficients, and minimum and maximum CSF and plasma OT concentrations were the following, respectively: 257.88 ± 265.90 pg/ml, 103.11%, and 11.70 and 1000.00 pg/ml. No statistically significant correlations were found between OT concentrations in the CSF and plasma samples (EM: -0.26; ES: -0.19; MMM: 0.05; MMS: 0.04). The OT concentration in CSF was not influenced by milk ejection stimuli, although plasma OT was higher in the MMM (679.80 ± 25.63) and MMS (591.82 ± 30.56) groups compared with the EM and ES groups. Additionally, plasma OT concentrations were higher in the OME group (381.04 ± 22.09) compared with the AE group (218.82 ± 27.04). In conclusion, no positive correlations were found between central and peripheral OT concentrations during milking and suckling. Plasma OT concentrations differed as a function of milking management and had consequences for both milk ejection and production. Plasma but not CSF oxytocin concentrations were influenced by different milk ejection stimuli
The effect of a mixed-management system on the release of oxytocin, prolactin, and cortisol in ewes during suckling and machine milking
Milk yield and plasma oxytocin (OT), prolactin (PRL), and cortisol (CORT) during suckling and machine
milking were measured in multiparous ewes subjected to a mixed management system of 3 sucklings and two
daily milkings. Peak hormones were significantly increased and were similar during suckling and milking
for PRL (181 vs. 163.3 ngmL) and CORT (12.5 vs. 11.5 ngmL). During the period
of exclusive suckling, OT was always significantly released (90.3 pg.mL-1); however, during the period of
mixed management, OT concentrations only increased during suckling compared to milking (91.7 vs. 13.1
pgmL). The mean volume of milk obtained during suckling (632 mL) was significantly higher
than during milking (255 mL). Thus, during a mixed management system, oxytocin and prolactin releases are
not under similar central regulation. A mixed system, without OT release during milking, does not
contribute to accelerate the conditioning of ewes for machine milking.
Effect of calf suckling on oxytocin, prolactin, growth hormone and milk yield in crossbred Gir Holstein cows during milking
This study evaluated the effect of different milking managements on oxytocin,
prolactin and growth hormone release in Gir Holstein cows. Six cows were suckled
by their calves, before and after milking (SM group); another six cows were submitted
to exclusive milking (M group). High OT levels were observed during suckling of the
SM group, however both groups had similar levels of OT during milking. The SM
group presented PRL levels significantly higher than the M group, however only
during suckling. For GH levels, the SM group showed higher levels than the M group,
however this difference was significant only during the first suckling, cleaning of
the teats and at the beginning of machine milking. Despite these results, SM cows
produced more milk (milking plus suckling) than M cows, however milk obtained by
milking was similar for both groups
Milk yield, residual milk, oxytocin and cortisol release during machine milking in Gir, Gir × Holstein and Holstein cows
This study evaluated the effect of exclusive machine milking on oxytocin (OT) and cortisol (CORT) release, and on milk yield and residual milk in Gir (group Gir), Holstein (group Hol) and crossbred animals (group GirHol). Six animals from each group were submitted to experimental milkings. As expected, milk yield was significantly higher in the Hol group than in the groups GirHol and Gir, and group GirHol produced more milk than the Gir group. In contrast, all groups exhibited significant but similar levels of OT, although OT increased more rapidly during milking for the groups Hol and GirHol than for the Gir group. In addition, CORT levels measured during and after milking were significantly influenced by the group. The Gir group showed higher levels of CORT than the groups GirHol and Hol. The lower performances of the Gir breed can not be explained by a less efficient milk ejection reflex because all cows studied released enough OT and had an effective milk ejection
