    Ultraviolet geometric albedo of Uranus

    Get PDF
The purpose was to obtain ultraviolet flux measurements of Uranus before and after the January 1986 flyby past Uranus by Voyager. These measurements were used to determine absolute flux distributions in the wavelength range 1950 to 3200 A. This wavelength range is an important region to observe since the model atmospheres for Uranus indicate that the albedo spectrum in this region can tightly constrain the height of the photochemical haze layer

The English statute of frauds is the law in Washington so far as it is not inconsistent with the Constitution and laws ... of the state of Washington nor incompatible with the institutions and condition of society in this state, .. . \u27 This Comment is concerned with the problem of whether the Washington statutes have entirely displaced the English statute in regard to the requirement of a writing and with some of the problems presented by the application of the statutes of frauds in Washington

Ionized Gas Kinematics at High Resolution IV: Star Formation and a Rotating Core in the Medusa (NGC 4194)

    Get PDF
NGC 4194 is a post-merger starburst known as The Medusa for its striking tidal features. We present here a detailed study of the structure and kinematics of ionized gas in the central 0.65 kpc of the Medusa. The data include radio continuum maps with resolution up to 0.18\arcsec (35 pc) and a 12.8μ12.8\mum [NeII] data cube with spectral resolution ∼4\sim4\kms: the first {\it high resolution, extinction-free} observations of this remarkable object. The ionized gas has the kinematic signature of a core in solid-body rotation. The starburst has formed a complex of bright compact \HII~regions, probably excited by deeply embedded super star clusters, but none of these sources is a convincing candidate for a galactic nucleus. The nuclei of the merger partners that created the Medusa have not yet been identified.Comment: to appear in Ap

Survey of the Vegetation and Flora of a Wetland in Kiser Lake State Park, Champaign County, Ohio

Author Institution: Department of Botany, Miami UniversityWe classified plant communities by criteria of physiognomy, environment, and flora. Use of Mueller-Dombois and Ellenberg's classification scheme for the world's vegetation provided 6 vegetation categories. The results of a Bray-Curtis ordination were consistent with our field observation of a correlation between these vegetation categories and a soil moisture gradient. The results of a cluster analysis were consistent with 5 of the vegetation categories, but the sixth should be subdivided according to variations in floristic composition. Our proposed classification has 8 plant communities: an alluvial forest dominated by Acer negundo and Parthenocissus quinquefolia, a reed swamp dominated by Eupatorium perfoliatum and Typha latifolia, a deciduous thicket dominated by Crataegus punctata, a second deciduous thicket dominated by Cornus obliqua and Aster pilosus, and a third deciduous thicket dominated by Rosa palustris and R. setigera, a perennial forb community dominated by Clematis virginiana and Verbesina alternifolia, a tall-sedge swamp dominated by Carex stricta and Eupatorium maculatum, and a herbaceous floating meadow dominated by Typha latifolia and Eupatorium perfoliatum. We list 183 species (of 61 families) and state the communities in which each is common
